Yes Dr o Brien an absolute genius as rarely had more than 40 horses in training and for a number of years no fillies. Golden fleece right up there with the very best. His 3 runs before epsom looking back was terrific form. He actually beat much better horses than in derby. Epsom wasn't the best racetrack for him. He had unbelievable acceleration. Yes pat eddery did think he was better than dancing brave especially over 12f he told us. Terrific upload this. What a horse. So underrated. Brilliant on the clock too in all his races especially sectional timing.

@Paul Gallagher No doubt, Sea Bird was the best derby winner in history, but we do have to acknowledge the fact the horse would have improved between The Derby and Longchamp.. so if we take all those horses you mentioned as we seen them on the day, I do wonder if it would have gotten a little too close for comfort for fans of Sebird. Nijinsky, Reference Point, Golden Fleece, Generous and Shergar in particular, may have got Seabird out his comfort zone. If he was ridden in the same style, in fear of injuring him on the road after the winning line, I suspect he would have come up short against a brilliant front-runner.

Interesting time comparisons Shergar in 1981 Golden Fleece 1982, the 1982 Derby was run over 10 secs faster! also from a mark visible just over 3f out i compared , Golden Fleece 39.47 to line, Shergar over 45 secs! even allowing for a softer surface in Shergar's Derby these comparisons are simply staggering!! this adds weight to the belief that Golden Fleece was indeed a truly exceptional animal , the times back it up, incidentally approx 3.5secs faster than the 1986 Derby Dancing Brave's year on a quick surface

Back in the good old day’s when the Epsom Derby winner was considered the best horse in Europe, that’s changed recently for two reasons, one when a certain horse didn’t win a Derby and two when Aidan O’Brien started dominating the race. For some of us who’ve been following racing for 6 decades the Epsom Derby is still the hallmark of greatness.
@laurencebranigan25456 жыл бұрын
It's fair to say that Assert improved later in the season but, Golden Fleece met him twice and beat him comfortably both times. Also, after his first win as a 3YO, Golden Fleece had to have improved to win the Derby. I feel it unfair he was rated behind Assert in some quarters. Too much emphasis is placed on the horses he beat at Epsom not being that good but how many beaten horses in The Derby amount to anything?
