When my mother was 6 or 7 years old (around 1970 was the year), she won a mini gumball machine at a carnival. She loved that thing. It was red with a glass bowl top, and it took pennies to get your gumballs. For a week she toted it around and offered gumballs to everyone. Then one day her 13-year-old brother wanted a gumball. She told him you needed a penny. He replied that you did not, took her gumball machine, and smashed it on the ground. Glass & gumballs went flying everywhere. My mother cried for 2 days. It was the first thing she ever won, and it was gone in seconds. It didn't make her a broken adult, but she does think about it from time to time. It always makes me kind of sad when I think about it. 😢
