BlackTree TV Personality Farai Gundan sits down with Director and Writer of Waltz with Bashir, Ari Folman.
One night at a bar, an old friend tells director Ari about a recurring nightmare in which he is chased by
26 vicious dogs. Every night, the same number of beasts. The two men conclude that theres a connection
to their Israeli Army mission in the first Lebanon War of the early eighties. Ari is surprised that he cant
remember a thing anymore about that period of his life. Intrigued by this riddle, he decides to meet and
interview old friends and comrades around the world. He needs to discover the truth about that time and about
himself. As Ari delves deeper and deeper into the mystery, his memory begins to creep up in surreal images
Did you start this project as an animated documentary?
Yes indeed. WALTZ WITH BASHIR was always meant to be an animated documentary. For a few years, I had
the basic idea for the film in my mind but I was not happy at all to do it in real life video. How would that
have looked like? A middleaged man being interviewed against a black background, telling stories that
happened 25 years ago, without any archival footage to support them. That would have been SO BORING!
Then I figured out it could be done only in animation with fantastic drawings. War is so surreal, and memory
is so tricky that I thought Id better go all along the memory journey with the help of very fine illustrators.
What came first the desire to make a documentary or the desire to make an animated film?
It was always my intention to make an animated documentary. Since I had already made many documentaries
before it was a real excitement going for an animated one. I made an experiment in my documentary TV series
THE MATERIAL THAT LOVE IS MADE OF. Each episode opened with a three-minute animated scene introducing
scientists talking about the science of LOVE. It was basic Flash animation, but it worked so well that I
knew a feature length animated documentary would eventually work.

Just screened in my college. Ditto, left everyone speechless, no one moved until a minute after the credits. One of the most intense movie going experiences ever. I recommend it wholeheartedly if you are up for it.

It is certainly out in a few European Countries, don't miss it everyone. I saw it yesterday and watched in awe. It is so real in spite of its form. The plot, the flashbacks, the emotion, the vividness of the whole thing... Above all, its truth! Don't get surprised if at times you feel as if you are there.

I know nothing about this conflict: YOU DON'T NEED TO KNOW. It's so well made as a film that you empathize with everyone in it. WOW! one of the best films I have ever seen! Great music too - extremely atmospheric. 5/5

Just saw this movie tonight in Leicester (Odeon). Was really hard hitting, something that you don't get very often. Was excellent. Left me and everyone else in the room speechless throughout the credits. Definitely worth a watch, try not to download!

I saw the preview for this at 'Slumdog' in Miami and was instantly captivated. This looks absolutely amazing. Exactly like what people are saying in the comments here is how I imagine it would be. They are only playing it in NY and LA right now. I must see this! Please bring this to Miami!

If you can help it, don't see it on divx. See it in the theater. The movie is so beautiful, it's worth going out of your way to see. A movie like this comes out maybe once in a decade. You won't regret the effort, and you'll probably also be supporting a good independent theater in the process.

It’s funny, because this movie tends to exaggerate many things... If you just consider his friend when the big mermaid takes him, he’s like a child compared to her in size. Or the IDF Galil that Frenkel holds during the waltz scene. It’s minute compared to the MAG. Or the guy who tells Ari “How would I know where to bury them. Go bury them. Bury them [the deads] somewhere with a very bright light, because that’s where they usually bury dead people”. Intentionally sounding stupid to mock typical IDF soldiers’ stupidity

Amazing movie, though I don't agree with his stance on rotoscoping at all. It's still an art form in my opinion.

I'm an Israeli, what are you? I think that the one who needs a little bit of research is you, not I.Because the Arab aggression towards the Jews in "Palestine" started before Israel was even established and before the "occupation" started and before the security wall and check points were built. It stems from the Arabs' refusal to reach a compromise and to recognize the right of a Jewish state to exist ANYWHERE in this land. There could be an Arab state in 1947 but they rejected the UN resolution
