Golden Retriever Dad Tells Daughter Playtime is Over

Although this behavior may seem shocking to those that have not spent time around dog parents and their puppies, this is completely normal. Sassa's Dad was always very loving and playful towards his puppies and would often cuddle with them and teach them how to play. However, puppies are HIGH STRUNG at this age and often don't understand when it's time to calm down. Puppies need to learn how to act from their parents in the first critical 8 weeks together. Many times it is the mother that does the most growling and snarling at her pups when they need to learn a certain behavior, especially throughout their weaning process. This communication and body language can be fascinating to watch in animals. Rest assured - Sassa's littermates and herself were very loved and safe with her fur parents :) Enjoy!

Super interesting how father/mother dogs lose their patience and get annoyed at their pups but ten seconds later act as pups themselves to their owners.
@live4applause
@live4applause 3 жыл бұрын
It’s because their owners don’t communicate their displeasure at the behavior nearly as well as dogs do to their puppies. Far too many owners actually reward it, whether they realize it or not. If their owners were to do the human equivalent (mostly just using a stern tone of voice and clear body language) of growling and baring their teeth the way this dog-daddy demonstrated, dogs would get it. The problem comes when people say words like “no” or “stop” while laughing and continuing to pet or play with the dog. The human is sending mixed signals and, since dogs don’t actually speak human language, body language (and tone of voice) comes across much more clearly to them. So even if they understand what the words coming out of the human’s mouth mean, they’re likely to ignore them when they get conflicting signals.

Actual parenting tho. The calmer she gets the less he snarls. He's laying down boundaries, "I don't want to play so don't bite my face". Great lesson for the puppy about socialising with dogs. Better than learning it the hard way, like overstepping boundaries with a dog it hasn't met before.

@@DavidRobinson-ou8fh Sadly, it's like bad human parents who never bother to learn about having/raising children...resulting in a lot of unhappiness for everybody. Cats, and DOGS especially, need training from their natural parents. Too terribly often they are given away by ignorant humans who don't realize that 6-8 weeks is FAR TOO SOON to be seperated from their parents - or at least from Mama dog. They need to learn so much (at least 3 to 6 months' worth of learning) - and with the bare minimum of training from humans. The healthiest, best adjusted animal companions are those who have been given this upbringing. The bitter truth is that many people are either too eager to sell them, or simply never learned about smart/healthy dog breeding/raising - OR - they didn't realize how INCONVENIENT RESPONSIBLE DOG CARE MIGHT BE FOR THEM!! In which case, maybe not a good idea to have a dog!! Or cat, or child. **This culture is often just plain backwards! **And the ones who suffer for it are the innocent young ones...

Even when aggrevated by their offspring, golden retrievers still remain one of the gentlest, calmest, most tolerant and patient dog breeds ever. My corgi mix would have snapped at a puppy within the first 10 seconds...
@Jen7867
@Jen7867 3 жыл бұрын
Haha, exactly!! And your corgi mix's approach wouldn't have been "wrong", even though it is different from the golden's approach. :-) I felt kind of sad and frustrated that the author of this video had to clarify that this show of discipline wasn't cruel whatsoever. Like you, I've seen discipline that is quite a bit more stern than this! But I understand why the author put that explanation in the description. Hopefully, when people who have spent a lot of time around dogs explain interactions like this, it will help to stem the tide of dog lovers who misinterpret interactions like this as meanness. The truth is, to not help the pups learn to respect the wishes of other dogs/people would be cruel. :-)

Dogs wag as an extension of expression of their emotions, which can be happy or irritated/angry, sometimes they wag when they are nervous too. I see the tail wag here as meaning "relatively calm, but a bit irritated". Kinda like a human smile can have all sorts of meanings, you have to read the rest of the body and the tone of voice to know what it really means.
