Join Uncle Stonnie as he answers the question, Golden Retriever, Is It Right For You. If you have ever wondered what it's like to live with or train a Golden Retriever we feel like this video will provide a great starting point for your research!
"A breed of many adventures. As excellent hunting and family companions, Goldens excel as Therapy, Service, Guide, and Search & Rescue dogs. Their participation in events such as Conformation (the show ring), Obedience, Agility and Rally trials, Tracking tests, and Hunting tests, is well-known. Most of all, they are family members who are equally comfortable with a hike, swim, romp in the snow, snuggle on the sofa, or taking up most of your bed at night!"

Seems to me like the Red one still has the instinct to use its nose more than the White dog. I think the White dog could learn to do most of what the red one can,but not as well and it would take alot more time and work. Well, I don't know if the White one would have the instinct to learn to hunt or not,it might be able to learn with enough trips with a very solid, driven hunting dog to mentor, and that's a maybe. Would make a nice pet good for nice reasonable day hikes though. The Red one I suspect could be trained for hunting/retrieving work, and would Probably enjoy it. It would Probably enjoy the Rough Hikes of a serious hiker if they could keep it from wondering to far. At least that's my take on what I think I seen. While I'm thinking about it, is it just the camera angle, me being tired or is the White one just abit taller than the Red one? On a side note I once listened to an interview with a woman who bred Chessies,(after watching your video with one) and I got the impression that a Chessie would hunt/retrieve all day if you let it.

When you discussed letting younger dogs explore, how do you allow them to explore without them running off? Our black lab did this and she was gone for 4 hours. We have a golden pup now. Would like for her to learn this since our house backs up to a lake but don't want her taking off because we are still in the city.

I have had 5 Goldens over the last 30 years. 3 at once to start. 1st was very large fluffy field bred,, with more family tendency than adventure.. 2nd was pure field bred, more compact fur easy to care for, but she loved to roam farther from the group, always coming back when called. I got 2 puppies same age different litters at 5 wks, raised together with her as mentor. One more red colored, one deep golden. Both had easy care fur, but they tended to be family oriented, very willing and able to do any challenge but stayed close. My current puppy is 8 months old. I have followed your advice from 1st day with us. He is the color of walker, and just as game to try anything and has strong athletic confident abilities. He climbs rocks and mountains with me, swims anywhere, even the ocean, and always stays close enough that he can see me, and comes on the run when called. He can go where I can't and fetches consistently. Surprisingly nothing sticks in his coat, so far. He rinses clean with a water hose and drys incredibly fast. He loves meeting people and other pets. Best dog I have ever owned. He walks on leash with just one finger like you show. I think he is the best and trouble free because of your training technique. Wish I knew it sooner, all my Goldens were easy, but with your help, he is effortless. Perfect companion outdoors or in.

I have a 2.5 year old Golden, not cream, but the basic light color. He's most definitely a field dog. He was non compliant for the first 18 months (horrid leash grabber), but he has finally turned into a fabulous companion. We have always walked the lanes, fields, woods for 45-60 min a day, and spend an hour out in the morning, and afternoon. He's a major zigzagger, and must do 5 times the miles I do. Today he found a shed antler and carried it all the way home.

Haha same. I actually thought my 5 month old might have a mixed bloodline with how red she is and how athletic she is compared to the average golden you see and already has defined muscle. Then I found out about field line Goldens and realized nope, she's definitely 100% field line golden lol. I felt like I might be doing too much exercise because it seemed like she just wanted to go go go and I didn't know if it was good for her as her bones are still soft and growing but now I realize that the working lines just really thrive on having jobs and activities to keep them mentally and physically stimulated enough. Hope your teenage pup is still doing great!

With the training Stonnie does it would be very hard to have an aggressive dog. I learn so much from every video - I will never have a golden but I have high drive Aussie - I have fallen in love with this breed even if it takes so much of my day to keep him happy. I would like to move to Kentucky just to train with Stonnie and for all that amazing walking space. Dodger would love it there.

To be fair though, if one lives in a non adventurous "natural" environment setting, it would be ideal to then pick a less adventurous by nature breed to begin with. I live in the country, my 8 mth field Retriever goes on a minimum 2.5 klm leash walk plus free run at the river in the middle of that for another klm, free run of our property, plus HOURS a day of rigorous traning/ intentional play and she's still not near worn out by the end of the day. I absolutely am, but she's doing 👍 lol No joke these dogs need a ton more exercises than one might expect. Frankly, I'd call her need for activity relentless, personally I couldn't deal with that if I lived in the city and had to venture out before the adventure could even begin each day. It would be exhausting.

I remember my golden's breeder chatting to me about a show she went to. It was outdoor, and it started raining. All the goldens with that fine hair got disqualified as the judge could see how water just soaked in rather than have that more repellent quality to it. Loved seeing the difference those 2 goldens, my boy is in-between those colours and falls somewhere between the personalities too 😅

Body type plays has a greater influence on the stamina etc. Colour is way down on the list. We used to breed goldens. Many times there would be a range of colour in the same litter. Our lightest golden was really goofy when he was young. He was quite large and had to learn to control his legs. He was one of the best duck dogs we ever had.

i had a golden rottie, the best of both worlds, she became my shadow, kid babysitter/playmate, homestead watcher, service dog, you name it. Her biggest issue was the garbage if left alone with it. We used to go for walks on the farm and I would let her run circles around me so she could burn off energy. My fave is the border collie, or aussie shepherd, I have a cross right now and she is mulitiburpose too but when she gets dirty I just let her dry and then brush and comb it out, no issues even with the norther coat. The retrievers on the other hand was a lot more work and smell. Other cross I loved is my beagle black lab, she too ended up to be my service dog.

Your videos are GREAT and I've used your "adventure based" techniques to raise my show Goldens! You would be AMAZED at how much your techniques benefit show Goldens in the show ring! Not only does the adventure work help them get into hard working condition - a standard by which they're being judged - but these daily adventures help their confidence, steadiness and intelligence! I am working on field training with my show Goldens, too. Show Goldens SHOULD be able to perform the hunting tasks that Goldens were bred to do! I just LOVE your videos & I'd love to bring my show Goldens by next time we're showing in Kentucky!

We have 3 goldens. All are darker color. The oldest is field bred but has a longer, thicker coat. She has a great nose, enjoys retrieving, and is fairly athletic. The other two are field bred, but from field trial lines. Their noses are not great, but they don't "enjoy" retrieving -- they need to retrieve. They are fare more athletic -- faster, more endurance, etc. The older of the two field trial bred dogs is now 8 and is unbelievably obedient. You all her and she comes at a dead sprint. The oldest, thicker coated dog, comes, but at her own pace. The youngest pup is now 11 months old and has finally turned the corner on being a decent citizen. One thing I love about field bred goldens is that they generally are pretty small, so they can do all a bigger dog can do while eating less, taking up less space, and hopefully having less stress on their joints.

Not field bred, but his lineage hunts some and he’s on the darker side, definitely not a show type, but somewhere in between I guess. Freakishly smart. I think he thinks he’s a person 😆 Lots of energy, very fast, and rambunctious (he’s almost 2), but he also can be cuddly and thinks he’s a lap dog, literally. Thank you for sharing your wisdom! I had two goldens brother and sister passed about a year ago! I just got a chocolate he’s almost 5 months and he’s a handful he’s field breed and just as tough and resilient as can be! This lab is different than anyone I’ve ever had he is pretty aggressive tough as can be and he just gets right back up and goes again! I just looked the other way and let him go I figure if he makes it through the first year of life he’s going to be an awesome dog rather than trying to control him he wants to experience everything going to steepest hills fall off the cliffs jump into the mineshaft swim in the white water oh well he’s going to be an awesome dog if he don’t Hurt himself! Best part I’m around the 95% of the time and a lot of stuff he just gets. One thing that concerns me this dog doesn’t like to be punished at all even verbally he kind of stands up to me and I’ve had dogs for all my life and helped many other people train their dogs and very much a dog person i’m a little confused? I’ve had several black labs and one other chocolate awesome dogs all very well trained some of my first ones were over trained!

It seems to be a great property you have. I would love to hove some land with a creek like that on it🙂 My first dog was a Golden Retriver. He's color was more golden, so in between the dogs you have here in this video. That was more common here in the early eigthies. Nowadays it is more common to see these white or sometimes, darker goldens. It was funny to see your darker dog roll in, as well as eat, poop. My golden would do that often. Especially when he was verry young but also sometimes later. Human poop was the best. Rotten fish or other dead animals were great as well in he's mind. One time I washed him with dog shampoo 3 times and still he was rather smelly. He did not shy away from obstacles. One time I claimed up a birdwathers tower. I did not ask him to come so I expected him to wait below. When I was up and looked down he was coming after me, climbing a ladder. That was more than I expected a dog to manage in the way of obstacles. The way down was a bit more tricky than to get up, but we both survived and made it down intact.

Great video. We have two dogs opposed in term of energy. One a malinois lot of energy. Run swim go for a ball always wants ro play. In the morning the first ready to go for a walk and we have another dog always interested by the food smelling in the grass. She doesn't play with ball she doesn't swim. But they are good friends they run together not a long time what about 5 minutes. But the opposition of these two dogs is not a problem. We go for a walk the malinois will spend 10 times more energy than the other. But both love to go for a walk. Thank you for your video.

My light golden is extremely energetic, i quite notice that her hair is no so fluffy as show golden, more like field ones. She runs 40-60 min daily and if we goes to the beach that girl can be swimming for 2 h. My darker golden is not so active even she is only 10 month, more of the cuddling type.

Do you think that a field dog (lab or golden) is better for a medical alert dog or a show dog? I’m looking for a dog that has high obedience and trainability but also not going crazy and not listening. How do I find that work drive without all the crazy or does that just come from training? We like to go to the beach and go hiking and camping when our health permits and during the summer as well.

Look at all those good dogs!! Lots of good learning going on there. Nice seeing how the varied types of a breed learn, and how much they may need to draw from your confidence level to gain their own. Stonnie, you'd better invest in some bricks. George and Charlotte have grown SO much in the last year! Charlotte's just about doubled in height.

I have a 11/2 year old golden retriever that has not been neutered. He has return commands down well, but has become very sniffy lately. Is it safe to let them off lease in green belt area 27:59

Stonnie! Happy to see this video. I loved the posts leading up but only ever had my uncles Golden’s to base my opinions off of. They were probably closer to show dogs in fur-type of fineness though they were more auburn in color not white. They were both stubborn as hell, walked like hell on a leash, but they were gems off leash in the lake and on the farm watching all the little kids. Good dogs to have! Worst I could say about them is they were so invested in retrieving they’d retrieve anything. Thrown by anyone. Couldn’t take them to soccer games until they were older. Air bud is a golden for a reason 😅. Love the video Stonnie!

How do you handle going off leash in nature/woods with a herding type dog (GSD, Heeler, etc) if you don't have them until they're adults? Just spending a lot of time with recall in the yard before taking them off leash in nature or off leash is not recommended for them?

Haven’t commented in a while Stonnie. This was a good episode. I can’t wait for you to do one on the Chocolate Lab. My first one was an American style male, and now i currently have a 7 year old English style retired female. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge. Peace and Calm. 👍🏻😎🇨🇦

I had a light golden retriever x Weimaraner (goldmararner) and he had traits of exactly the characteristics you talk about. The golden retriever (his Dad) certainly calmed him down but he was still a real character though. Had to have him put to sleep last year and still miss him. Love these videos as it helps people choose the right dog for their life style, environment and family.

I’ve had 5 Golden’s, 2 of them had the Angel Hair you mentioned, and that coat is gorgeous, but very challenging to care for. My youngest is a show bred and fits the profile you described perfectly. A short walk or 2 -3 ball tosses and he’s ready to chelax! ☺️. They have ALL been great dogs, love the breed so much!

I have a chocolate field lab. I'd be very interested in your thoughts on them and what makes them different. My other lab was a black female, which I had years ago.

Incorrect. Fields and American Goldens (show goldens) are both red or any shade of red, but not cream. English / Canadian goldens can include cream, but also can be any shade of red. What makes a field golden a field golden is the breeding. If the dog was bred for hunting traits and not a show line, it will be thinner, have less hair and more energy, etc., but their color does not make them "field" and a field golden can also be a lighter shade of red. You can tell just by looking at "Bo" that he is not "show bred". He's English or Canadian cream.

Leash laws are killing the sporting breeds. My neighbors outside cat on the other hand, no leash, no worries and it shits in my backyard and pisses on my trucks wheels daily but no problem there. Extremely well behaved sporting dog off lead.... super huge problem. Karen calls the cops!

Why does the first article I read say color doesn't have anything to do with temperament? Also when I bought my puppy, most were black, they temperament tested them and they all had different temperaments with the same color. Not buying it, not saying you're wrong but I'm skeptical color makes a big difference in temperament.

Who wrote the article? How are they defining "temperament"? Did they link to a series of videos demonstrating with various types of dogs?

We fostered a 5 y/o golden retriever (friend got sick) for 8 months and it was a nightmare. The dog was overweight, never wanted to do anything (even after the weight loss), and would act out on her old bad behaviors no matter how much we tried to train her. She was NOT a good fit for us and we were thrilled when a rescue agency was able to take her from us. They're sweet dogs but she was stuck in her ways and too clingy... We prefer our dogs to be independent, like our Labrador.
