The Golden Retriever is a large-sized breed of dogs. Golden Retrievers have an instinctive love of water, and are easy to train basic or advanced obedience standards. They are a long-coated breed, with a dense inner coat that provides them with adequate warmth in the outdoors, and an outer coat that lies flat against their bodies and repels water. The dog sheds copiously, particularly at the change of seasons, and requires fairly regular grooming. The Golden Retrievers' intelligence makes them a versatile breed and allows them to fill a variety of roles. The breed's friendly, gentle temperament means it is unsuited for the role of a professional guard dog. Retrievers are kid-friendly. The average lifespan for a Golden Retriever is about 11 to 12 years.

I grew up with Goldens and their personalities can be as individual as a human's. I've known the gentleman giant who would occasionally get into mischief, the wise old bean who just loved being with you and the psycho doggo who was still a good boi but very much a lunatic with his actions from day to day. Later this year I'll be getting my next Golden Retriever. It's been a year since our last Golden passed on, and the house just doesn't feel complete without one.

I'm sorry to hear that. At least she lived a long life. My golden was 13 when he passed away. Although he passed away 29 years ago, I still remember him like it was yesterday.

My advice is this; If you are looking for a good pet, keep moving. If you want a loved family member? Yeah, you should definitely consider a Golden. I mean that, they don't really do the 'pet' thing so much as the 'family' thing. They want to be around you, they want to interact with you, even if you don't see them as family, they are going to see you that way. These are not dogs for spending their days alone in the backyard. They want to be where you are. Now if you want that kind of close relationship with a dog, well, some of the best people I've known were Golden Retrievers. I live with a Golden now, my buddy Loki. But no, he's not a pet. 'Friend', 'Family'... sure... but not a 'pet'. The more you can include a Golden in your life, the happier they are. Office dog policy? Can you take your dog to work with you? They LOVE that. Not saying you need to take them to work with you, just saying, they enjoy that sort of thing more than most dogs. Talk to them sometimes, they like knowing they are the center of attention when you do. Not even joking. More than anything they want to be included with the family. Give them that kind of relationship, and they are happy dogs. They don't want to be your 'pet', they want to be your buddy. Subtle difference. I seriously doubt I'm the only one that would question whether 'pet' is the best word to use with a Golden Retriever.

Adarsh Jon Alex I have a Goldie, and when she is alone, she is barking for a lil time, but she tends to ruins everything in the room when she is alone! Even when there are toys to play with, she ruins a pillow or something else, so I dont know if shes spoiled, or is it the breed. But she doesn't bark that often.

To anyone reading the comment below mine and are second guessing a Golden: 1. Goldens have high energy, but they are nothing compared to a Lab so I don't even know why she is categorizing them together because they are very different when it comes to energy level and personality. 2. There has been recent studies showing biting (not so much aggression) in Golden Retrievers and this comes from the lines that they are bred from. If you are looking to get a golden (just like any other dog) you need to make sure you are researching the breeder and her other clients and meeting the parents of the dog you will be purchasing. If you are rescuing or adopting just like any other dog it could possibly act a different way based on where it came from or if it was abused( no brainer on that one). A lot of Golden breeders by me will say that they breed their Goldens for temperament not look which is how I ended up with 2 and they wouldn't hurt a fly... ever! Both Bailey and Zoey are service dogs and they love children and are not territorial whatsoever....i'm sorry the girl had a bad experience with goldens but that doesn't make it right for her to come in here and say she "hates" the breed and that they are hard to train.

Is it a good idea for me to get one of these dogs I am young I'm 11 pffft... i have a friend who was playing with a golden retriever and everything was going OK but then the dog ran at him and jumped and bit his neck right next to his jugular and took a piece out of his neck and he passes out seconds later and to only find out that he was brought back to live with some defibulators in hospital because he had 'died' from loss of blood but after a few months he is okay now. I remember when me and some friends including the dog attack victim ( we will call him Noah for now ) was at a sleepover party at one of my friends houses and they have some cute tiny dogs and when Noah went to sit down the two dogs came over to him wanting a pat or a treat of somesort but Noah just started SREAMING! and running around and we tryed to calm him down and after a while he was okay. That day showed me that he had gotten scared for life from that dog attack and is still TERRIFIED of dogs to this day!

I am basically searching for any video that can tell me i can raise a golden in an apartment. I've always wanted a golden retriever, but sadly i cant afford to buy a house and i am at work for 9 hours a day. it will be so hard for me to leave the dog alone in the apartment for that long :( In the end i will most probably leave my work and stay at home playing with her/him. Do you believe goldens can be happy in an apartment, or should i go for a smaller breed ?

Your Family It takes a lot of time, dedication and training. I had big dogs my entire life living in New York. I moved to Hong Kong 4 years ago and missed having dogs living in my companies service apartment. I got my own place and within the first week of having my private space I got my golden boy Dooley. He is fine at home and if he needs to go during the day he has a mat in the bathroom. He eats before me and we are downstairs walking and playing at least 2 hours every day. Weekends are spent going to dog pools or open fields. An apartment is fine as long as you know rain or shine you're out there every day giving what he needs.

Pavlin Hristov Well i think the dog doesnt care about the space, but the time you spend with the dog. I dont have a big dog like a Golden Retriever because im allergic to them, but I have a small yorkie. He doesnt mind that we live in an apartment. When i move into a house, im going to get another dog. Maybe start off with one dog if you live in an apartment. Thats what I do.

Well you shouldn’t purchase one. Every animal you get, adopt it! Adoption can be free of up to maybe $300. Not much. A lot of stores that sell animals are getting shut down because it’s not right to sell animals when you can adopt one! :)
