The golden rules of canoeing are a set of rules that when followed, will allow you to paddle more efficiently and help keep you safe on the water. In this video, we look at choosing an appropriate paddling location, using the power of your torso and to prepare for the unexpected.

I have capsized a canoe only once 25 years ago and it was in a freshwater lake in North Florida among a sea of lily pads. I was leaning really far over trying to unhook a fishing lure from a lily pad (a good way to capsized any watercraft). Luckily I was only in about chest deep water and was able to clamor back in and continue fishing. When I got to shore my girlfriend came over and informed me she just happened to be video taping me when I took the plunge. I still laugh at that video today. It could have been much more serious in deeper water or near a hungry alligator. Good learning experience.

We were in a small raft going across a reservoir when a buddy kept screwing around, none of us had a life vest on. We ended up capsizing and I sank to the bottom, literally. I was wearing a jean jacket and cowboy boots which filled up. Now I can hold my breath for several minutes which thankfully, I was able to do. Somehow I managed to swim fully clothed with my boots on back to the surface. IT was a strange experience since it was so quiet, just quiet down there. I will also mention that as kids we were riding inner tubes down a creek when a friend capsized in an eddy. I don't remember why but we were onshore right at that spot, I reached in and grabbed him by the hair, being kids, we just punched him n the belly, he spits up, we laughed and off we went again. Always, always wear a vest.

Wouldn't an alligator be able to get you regardless of you being in or outside the canoe?

Did something similar visiting a lake in winter park fl at thanksgiving (~25yr ago). i don't know if it was a log or an alligator, but whatever i first planted my feet on moved under its own power (in my mind and memory anyway, but I'm human....) i learned to remount a mostly swamped canoe, cause it was that or walk on water. cured me of swimming for the day. that night they pulled out the spotlight and shined across the water......those "glowing marbles" cured me of swimming for a year or so.

I think capsizing happens more than what they're describing but less & less with experience. Packing your canoe right, keeping weight down and taking safe shore routes. Stay safe.

We have Flipped a canoe in Lake Superior in rough water trying to cross a bay . We lost our strength because of the cold water and couldn’t pull ourselves back into the boat. Thank god for our PDF . And the onshore wind we were able too make it back to shore. Lake Superior is very cold. Colder than any of the Great Lake. Crossing a bay on the Great Lakes is difficult because your sometimes along way from shore. It’s no wonder so many French Fur traders drown back in the day. Thanks

One thing that a ranger from Sleeping Bear Dunes Nat'l Lakeshore suggested to me was that for any trip plan that you leave with someone, get the number of whatever law enforcement agency has jurisdiction over where you'll be. That way, if you don't return or check in on time, the person with your plan knows who to call. Calling 911, and figuring out who to contact from there, can take a long time to initiate a search.

Correct. Most canoeists never experience a capsize. I have been canoeing a lot and also in waters with a lot of canoe traffic, and I have never seen ONE canoe capsize at all.

I've canoed across the Columbia River. It looked calm and easy. But on the return trip the weather came up quickly and that current is a tide on steroids! My partner that day still won't get back in a canoe.

Practice capsizing in waters that aren't Puget Sound cold. Plan your trip to flow with the tides. Don't play Chicken with the ferries.

Wrong way round. Keep your top hand straight. Similar to a boxer rotating into a punch. A straight lower arm extends the paddle and thus goes outside of the power box

Stay near the shore, make sure someone knows that you’re out. You really want someone with experience to be out with you for your first few times, just so you know what to look for and what to do. Are you a strong swimmer?

"Most canoers will never have to deal with a capsize." That is pure wrong. Canoe like to make you swim. When you begin canoeing, the very first thing you need to teach a scout, a newby is, "Yep. You are gonna get wet. Expect it. Plan for it. Enjoy the swim when it happens. No big deal." This is where I end my viewing of this video. Next thing you know they are going to telling you that it is okay to not wear your PFD and to sit on a seat cushion. Both of those are dangerous.
