Which kayak performs better between the showdown and the recon 120 HD, as far as trolling speed? I know the recon is heavier but the helic drive is more highly touted. I watched your review on the recon too. Thank you

I’m literally here because I learned that in the LotR movies the characters all paddle appropriately for their skill level.. I guess Aragorn, and Legolas have perfect J strokes, meanwhile the hobbits just kinda paddle Willy nilly.. I was curious what to look for and it’s true.. what a cool detail.

Hi Ken. Know exactly what you mean about having a "heightened awareness and adrenalin going" when paddling in strong wind. Was out last weekend (14 Dec) with a group, it was our Christmas luncheon paddle, where we probably should have read the conditions better and gone for a different paddle location. Anyway, we were paddling out to an island which normally takes about 40 min to get across the channel but this paddle took over 1 hour 40 min for me. Put in to landing is a WNW route of 4.3km. The wind was coming in from the north, average winds speed around 25-28km/h with gusts at least into the 40's if not higher. It was producing a nasty a short 20-30cm up to half meter wind blown cross wave (lots of white caps) with an under lying 1m plus swell which was coming in from a NW direction. Some of those swells doubled up at times and small hills were required to be paddled up and over. I found paddling into it actually OK and sometimes enjoyable, I had reasonable control. It was effectively a big fairy glide, my paddling direction was about a NNW course to paddle over. In the end covered just over 5.1km Getting back latter in the day, another story. The group paddled up the side of the island to give us a more down wind (but still a beam on/quartering) run back to the beach. Fortunately the wind had subsided a wee bit (down around 20km/h) but was still producing an uncomfortable short beam/quartering wave on top of the 1m swell. As we approached the bay to land, the swells again built (onshore swell) and there were some very uncomfortable moments were kayak control was only just maintained. Having to look over ones shoulder and keep an eye on the water to my left and ahead, kept the eyes on a constant swivel. No time to rest or relax, lots of focus. And not all that enjoyable. Fortunately....... I made the beach with out sampling the water temp, but had to stop and assist another of the group who did. Multi kayak rescue due to the large sea conditions. I didn't capture any video of the return trip as I was way more focused on staying upright what with the wind and waves. I've paddled in stronger gusting winds where paddling ahead was only to just prevent one going backwards, but that was in near flat water meters away from the shore. The conditions last weekend pushed the envelope a looong way out there. Anyway thats my little story of paddling in wind. In hindsight, the groups decision making could have been better - in my opinion. Please keep the video's coming, am enjoying watching them. Second the comments others have made as well. Pity about the shoulder, hope it mends up reasonably quickly and you can get out and do some more paddling adventures. All the best. Chris (New Zealand)

We've just now seen this, and are sending you every good wish for a strong and fast recovery. You have a lot of unseen fans out here. I've just started paddling this past couple of years, and my husband has been at it for longer. We watch Paddle TV all the time, and thank you for all your helpful advice and encouragement. I suffered a tendon injury to my right arm, which meant I could neither paddle nor play my harp for some time (it seemed like eternity, though it wasn't). So I understand the feeling. But your good spirits will get you through. Hope you're back on the water soon! We'll still be here, ready to share your adventures.

I have one and am selling it because it is not, in my opinion, sufficiently robust for the open ocean. I also didn't enjoy paddling it. The deck zips, the decklines and attachment points, the undersized Oru buoyancy bags, the lack of cockpit outfitting - all are weak points. If the deck zips break open you are left with nothing. It sits high in the water and catches the wind and there are heavy folds either side of the combing that make paddling uncomfortable at times, particularly because it is relatively wide. The rubber protrusions on the hull affect the glide - I found the Oru gratingly sluggish. I really wanted to love this kayak, but I don't. I'm looking at Nortik and Nautiraid for something better - albeit more expensive.

Wow, fun to finally see someone doing big whitewater in a sea kayak. A friend and I paddled the Grand Canyon in 1994 in 17 foot Eddyline Raven sea kayaks loaded with our camping gear. As you noted, adjusting lines was difficult. To compensate we would crank our boats over sharply onto their edges to free the keel and from that position they could be spun reasonably well, if slowly. But once they came around, the sheer speed they were capable of would make up for the time lost in steering. I did such a turn across the big waves in Granite to escape the current plowing into the right wall. And OMG, a loaded sea kayak will slice through big waves and holes like nobody's business. Good on ya mate for getting out there.

I have a 15 lb canoe and just bought the ORU Lake as a second boat. I use a 96" paddle in my canoe and tried it in my Oru Lake. I didn't get any water in the kayak from the paddles. So maybe a longer paddle would solve the water in the Inlet issue. Great review here!

This boat is designed for stability on flat water. Some of yall are mentioning what if it flips. My question is, what are you doing to make it flip? My previous yak is a 10 ft pelican which is quite stable but Ive never flipped it. Even in choppy water. I also dont drink, do drugs or try to stand up in it, to pretend it's an SUP either.

To clarify, its not really hypothermia but rather cold water shock that is more likely to be the danger. The former takes potentially a half hour or more while the latter takes seconds.

Advocating any amount of alcohol consumption while/during any type of on-water activity is completely irresponsible. If you want to have a drink, do it after you're off the water AND finished with the drive home. As an influencer, you are responsible for setting standards of Best Practices and disseminating those Best Practices to the average person. Advocating any type of alcohol consumption with an on-water activity is completely irresponsible.

Oh please... A splash of Baileys for flavour is not irresponsible. It's not the same as advocating drinking on the water.

So glad you are feeling better. I have also had some shoulder isses at times and I have some thoughts to share. 1) sleeping with shoulder pain - when my shoulder is acting up, I make it worse when I move it arround during sleep. To imobilize the sore shoulder, I pull the injured shoulder/arm inside of my t-shirt with my arm across my chest. This reduces movement when I sleep and after a while, usually reduces the pain enough to sleep. 2) The way your shoulder ultimately got well on its own, is similar to my experience. In my case a pinched nerve in my back was interfering with my shoulder movement, range of motion, and the shooting pain would have me seeing stars. This went on for weeks. I remembered that a weight training coach taught me to streatch out my back after a workout to bring the spine back to it's original form (verses a compressed / twisted shape). As I age I find I need to do this more often and any time I feel my shoulder pain coming back. The process is simple. Find something like a pullup bar and hang with your feet off of the ground for 30-60 seconds or more. You will actully hear your spine moving back into place. It will likely take a few days if you have not done it before. Good luck and thanks very much for the equipment reviews and adventures.

There's a significant difference for sure... It's faster, and it tracks a little better... but it's still only a 10' kayak and 30" wide, and so it won't win any kayak race! :)
