Happy birthday Dan. That first strike from the jack looked like a corker! What a shame to lose it at the side of the kayak, but I reckon that heart-pounding strike is even better than seeing them slide into the net.

Sure is mate. At least i got a good look at it before it popped off. Would have been a good fish but thats part of the fun. Yeah it smashed me and i had to put my hand on the spool to stop it getting back under the mangrove. I always get the shakes after a good hit and run like that. Gets the adrenaline pumping thats for sure.

That was a cracking Jack, pity to pull hooks. I find them hard to land when drifting so hard on the current or wind, hard to get the head in the right direction to land. Ripper Fingermark, too.
@HardYakkaFishingKayaker4 жыл бұрын
Yeah i was fair flying back with the run. I could see it wasn't hooked well and i also didn't want to try swipe at it with the net. Just a part of fishing i guess. Would have been good to land but it was a great hit and run and at least i got to see it.

That's part of the challenge and I feel the kayak enhances the joy of landing them. Inspiration for the next trip.

Cheers Crouching Wombat. Many years and casts to find what works when. Its more about how well you get to know an area and even then you cant figure them out some times.

Good advice, we used to live in Palmerston NT. I fished the middle arm for two years untill I worked out the spots and tide's. Started catching some nice fish then moved to Calliope, had to start again. O well, just being close to nature is a reward. 👍

I was up there for about a year a good 10 year ago now. Didnt get much fishing time but loved it up there. Best of luck mate and there are some good spots up Calliope for Barra and Jacks. Cheers

Love to see the way you released that grouper too mate..... So respectful of our protected species. From the sound of that line and leader ripping through your guides, I reckon you need to fish a bit heavier for those conditions. Curious as to what size leader/main line you are running? I was stumped down at Terranora Creek recently, when I tossed my 10lb outfit into some prospective jack territory and got bricked twice (the second time I spotted the jack ripping my plastic down into its little rocky hole). I upgraded to 20lb leader and got bricked again 20 metres away. Sometimes the light gear is enough, but around heavy structure the big fish will always win. I’m geared up for a jack run tomorrow, with everything from 6lb to 40lb leaders tied onto four rods, so I’ll be throwing the most appropriate for the area I am casting to. Given the fishing here lately, I reckon I’d have more luck tossing my lure around at the local donut shop.

Yeah love the QLD Groupers. Seem to be getting a few of late and more than a dozen this year. Im running 30lb braid and 40lb leader and usually dont have to many dramas. Problem was the crab pot next to the spot and i had to cast along the bank over the crack i know is there and yep he got me on the back side of it and straight home lol.

Holy shit that jack looked like it was 60
@HardYakkaFishingKayaker4 жыл бұрын
Recon it would have been 50 or just over. The lure is 10cm and going off that would have been around that. Was painful then the lure shot out and it was probably its last dive before getting in the net. Cheers Angry
