There can't be many railfans who have not seen the famous photograph of the locomotives Jupiter and 193 facing each other on May 8th, 1869 at Promontory Summit, Utah, celebrating the completion of the world's first transcontinental railroad. This video shows switching (shunting) movements which form part of the daily celebration of this highly significant event in the history of communications, at the Golden Spike National Historic Site.

Thanks; glad you liked it. I had read the Stephen Ambrose book and was captivated by the enormity of the project so close to the dawn of railroad technology. It was an incredible vision and this site celebrates that fact. In fact, the story of this railroad is an example to us all to be bolder in our vision. Cheers! Dave

It must be really funny with two completely different steam locomotives having their bells sound exactly the same. Awesome video! The best on youtube as far as I'm concerned!

Wow! Thank you. It's a great place to visit. The locos are replicas but they are absolutely exquisite. Cheers, Dave

The engines were the Jupiter and the 119, not 193. The spike was also planned to be drove on May 8th, but didn't happen until May 10th.
