Golden Tiger in Kaziranga Tiger Reserve, Assam, India

Kaziranga Tiger Reserve of Assam has a population of more than one hundred tigers. The Tiger Reserve includes Kaziranga National Park (also World Heritage Site), Laokhowa & Burhachapori Wildlife Sanctuaries. There are four different coat colour morphs reported in Tigers. This tiger falls under golden tigers with blonde colour and red-brown stripes. It has substantial white colouration
on the face and underside of the body. The tiger was first camera trapped in Kaziranga in 2016. This phenomenon occurs because of an autosomal recessive trait coded by an independent locus, ‘wideband’. The occurrence of this coat colour morph is very rare in the wild.
It is a matter of concern, as this colour morph occurs because of inbreeding (mating within same isolated population). The tiger habitats are now mostly fragmented and isolated due to unsustainable use by humans and developmental activities. The corridors connection tiger habitats are under serious threat from human activities.
