@@bigherm70068 serpentine isn't jade. Jade is either jadeite jade or nephrite jade. Serpentine isn't as hard as jade, it has a hardness of 3 to 6. Real jade is 6.5-7.

Hello Saint, unfortunately I have not seen any of the famous Pounamu in NZ, but would be cool to find a piece while walking on some river. I have heard that it is protected by a law, and only the Maori can pick it up?

@Goldendives That's the general law, however, some areas are open for public fossicking in the South Island, and as far as I know, pebble-sized pieces are ok to possess. If you're lucky enough, you might even be gifted some raw greenstone by a legitimate dealer. This is a generalised statement only.

It would be cool to go to one of those shops, but I just wouldn't trust anybody. If you didn't know what you were doing with Jade, you could get ripped off so easily. It kind of sucks because I would love to buy something from there but, you better take somebody with you that knows that place inside and out and who won't rip you off.

I wonder how many of those cabachons in the jade mall are molded glass. The shiny black carved stuff looks like molded glass. We have people selling molded glass at local flea markets. They are 100% certain it's jade, but it isn't.

Jade is cheaper in Canada !

Canadian jade is nephrite jade. A calcium magnesium silicate. Burmese jade is jadeite, an aluminium silicate. They are very different but both regarded as jade. Jadeite is rarer and therefore more expensive than nephrite, which is relatively common. Personally i prefer nephrite
