I always found it interesting that Daybreaker's name was known but never stated by her. Indeed, if I recall correctly, the name is not given until Luna states is. Such indicates to my mind that this is not the first time Daybreaker has appeared in the dream realm. It could well be that she isn't a product of Starlight's mind but Celestia's inexperienced and so unshielded subconscious intruding. After all, it must have occurred to Celestia "If Luna, why not me?" and perhaps the thought often weighs heavy on her mind.

This is indeed Starlight's best episode. It gives a good look at her in a redeemed sense as well as focusing on that part of her without having her being shadowed by any of ths mane 6 or another side character, at least to the point there is too much of focus on any of them. Plus Celestia tends to finally get some spolight for once along with a super relatable dynamic among siblings in which one could get out shinied by the other. Kinda wish this was longer than typical stand episode length. C:

I’d argue the S6 finale was Starlights best episode. It’s when most fans woke up, forgave her and stopped hating her for petty reasons. Good times… This episode is fantastic for Starlight as well. This and Shadow Play present Starlight as a better protagonist than Twilight.

Actually Golden this episode in a way shows the same type of attribute to the story of the prince and the Pauper where the 2 identical main characters of one who is living the life of a normal kid and one is living the life of Royalty and the two both wanted to understand eachothers lives, The pauper wanted to know what it was like to be Royalty and the Prince wanted to know what it was like to be a regular kid on the streets, and So the story goes on and i say the team who made this episode showed full well that for the Royal Sisters to know and understand who's life is the roughest Starlight did make the right call by switching both the Cutie marks and skills of the sisters as a true way for them to understand eachothers lives. :)

Another excellent review GoldenFox, even though "A Royal Problem" is one of my favorite mlp episodes even i am aware of it's ups and downs hell i've even heard people say how basic both the plot and the lesson is but it's still an overall good episode! And regarding what you said about Luna's nightmare being creepy Golden, i agree on that but not only is it creepy many people considered it to be one of the darkest scenes of the entire FIM series and it's like i said in the chat, at least 19 of Luna's 40 teeth fell out i say 40 teeth because i found out that the average Equine has over 40 teeth in their mouths.

For fuck's sake, they can at least _try_ to maintain some good qualities and share that with the crew. But I see your point on the attitude bit. A couple of managers that I know of have their bitchiest moments on days when I don't wanna deal with it, but I have to put on a brave face and a positive smile and just say "Yes, ma'am" or "Yes, sir" in order to transition smoothly into the graveyard times. This episode would have easily made my "Love" list of S7 if not for one factor- Twilight. I honestly couldn't stand her behavior, but then again her neurotic tendencies are why she's my least fav of the Mane 6 and overall one the worst ones in the show. I feel like Starlight's own anxiety could have easily increased without Twilight being there due to seeing the conflict between the sisters. So when Starlight actually put her in that drawer, I actually clapped and said, "FINALLY she's gone!" So I pretty much ignore the Twilight moments and just focus on the other ones. Edit- to those who do love Twilight, I am sorry, but she just reminds me too much of my own mother, whom I have a very poor relationship with because she's a lot like her.

worth noting on the cutie mark swap: first; the "staff" that starlight used was in her own words, just a chunk of wood with no special properties, the magic of removing cutie marks was all starlight. second; starlight forcibly removed alicorn twilights cutiemark (along with the other 5 of the mane six), and in a later episode fought alicorn head to head on what seemed like equal footing. Starlight has beefy magic potential in other words.

Yeah, I kind of have to agree...this episode does have kind of the "Lilo and Stich" effect. If you've seen "Nostalgia Critic's" review of that movie you know what I'm talking about. If not, basically the movie got one element done so perfectly that it worked against it. Which in that movie's case was the relationship with the sisters...that the whole alien plot kind of felt underwhelming, or in "Home Alone's" case the slapstick. However, like you said...the scenes leading up to it make it that much more rewarding. This is kind of the thing I do like about MLPFIM, the writing is always well done and shows that even though the writers know it is kind of a silly premise...they do bring their A-game and worked their butts off to not only be good for kids...but have it reach a broader audience. Even to the point where some of the morals are more for adults than kids...it's one of those rare shows that even though it had so much against it...still managed to shine brightly.

As late as this episode was in the series, I think it’s okay. What Starlight Glimmer did was truly a bold move and something I don’t think any character prior to her introduction could have done. Twilight may have been powerful enough, but she simply would never, and no other character would have had the raw magical ability. Doing this episode with this theme any time sooner wouldn’t have felt right.

Starlight is astonishingly powerful. Plus she's capable of going toe-to-toe with Twilight (Who, whilst being more powerful, was demonstrably less experienced in combat magic than she), and In terms of raw power, she's probably beaten out only by Pre-Alicorn Twilight, Shining Armor (Who is arguable stronger even than his sister prior to her ascension - just without the skill or practice to cast more than his favourite spell) and possibly Sunset. Though that last one is debatable. And she's entirely self taught. She lacks the formal training Twilight Possesses. I think, if she turned her attention to it, and made it an ambition, she could eventually ascend. Though that is not where her ambitions lie. I think the reason for her remarkable power is her Mark, and the flavour of Magic: Chronomancy. She, and she alone, is the closest thing Equestria has to a competent Time Mage. Its never explicietly confirmed to be her talent, but it makes sense: All her greatest feats come from meddling with time in some way. This is why she's also capable of not only completing the timetravel spell, but refining it. When Twilight meddled with Time, she was only able to participate in a closed loop. She couldn't actually alter the future, no matter what she tried. She was capable of performing a time travel. Capable of casually de-aging herself and her friends - something that previously was deemed impossible for a normal caster. With that ability, she is functionally immortal. How does this allow to her to mess with people's marks? I think its subtle, but I think thats a form of Time Magic too. I think she is capable of messing with people's Destinies; which is why she's able to meddle with people's marks: The literal manifestation of what it is that they are destined to do in life. She didn't just change the sister's Marks, she altered the flow of *what they were destined to do with their powers*. She retroactively, and localised only to the sisters, adjusted their lives so that one had been born to raise the Sun, and the Other to raise the Moon. The breadth of what she is capable of could be staggering. Pure speculation here, but I think she alone might be capable of recreating the spell to visit alternate realities and timelines. If I had to pick on character to take on an Alicorn, it would be her, because with the right set up, she could potentially *undo* an Alicorn's Ascension.
@greenorbit65073 жыл бұрын
Ugh…. Starlight is stronger than Alicorn Twilight. This is made abundantly clear at least twice. Twilight DID NOT receive a power boost when she became an Alicorn. Starswirl and Sombra (unicorns) have also proven they are stronger than Alicorn Twilight.
@benlowe17013 жыл бұрын
@@greenorbit6507 For a given definition of stronger. I'm fairly sure Twilight simply isn't as practiced in terms of combat magic. Twilight has the better sword but she's never used it or trained to fight. Starlight by contrast is entirely self taught. Shining Armor has *ludicrous* raw power, but isn't a trained magic user. His shield Spell is insanely potent. But there's not evidence he ever received training in what you might call wizardry. Twilight is bonkers powerful, even before becoming an alicorn, but she's by the book. She masters existing magic. She's very much the Wizard if you go by classic DND classes. Starlight on the other hand is the sorcerer. She does stuff on the fly, mixing and matching bits of different magic, coming up with her own ways of doing things. She turns Telekinesis into a cheap and dirty flightspell (where as Twilight would come up with a ludicrously complex method of adding wings) Is she more *powerful* that Twilight? I wouldn't say so. Can she *beat* her in a *Fight*. Yes. But not because she's more powerful. It's like the difference between a boxer and a weight lifter. The boxer could knock out a stronger opponent, if only because they have the right tools and techniques. She'd still lose in a raw power context. But she's *very* good at fighting.
@greenorbit65073 жыл бұрын
@@benlowe1701 Debatable, but Starlight has proven she’s more powerful on at least two occasions. 1. She banished Discord. This spell was not just a banishing spell, but a physical one as it damaged the land. In other words if any other character besides Discord had been in the line of fire, they would’ve been obliterated. 2. Starlight fought evenly with a Grogar amped Chrysalis. Celestia lost to a weaker version of Chrysalis in S2. Celestia>Twilight until proven otherwise which means Starlight>Twilight.
@benlowe17013 жыл бұрын
@@greenorbit6507 Again, that doesn't prove power. It proves she was better at battleling enemies. The Discord Banishing Spell is a good point, but it's a fair assumption that Discord wasn't expecting such an attack and could have prevented it if he'd been paying attention. And the fact it affected the surrounding area might not be a point in her column, as it suggests a lack of fine control that Twilight possesses. A lower power light bulb can produce more heat than a high power one if it's ineffecient. Unintended waste energy is not always an indicator of strength. But I think it comes down to individual talent rather than pure strength. Someone with a sword, is better at killing someone than someone who doesn't have one, even if they are slower, weaker, or not as smart. So long as you have the right training and tools. So Starlight doesn't need to be more powerful than Twilight in order to be better at blasting enemies. She just needs to be more practiced at those kinds of spells in those kinds of situations. And more willing to use them. Twilight isn't a warrior. She's a scholar. She's like Albert Einstein for magic. Starlight has a bigger hammer, because she deals with her problems by blasting first and asking questions later. She's got very good at, and might even be better at blasting things than Twilight for whom that is a last resort. But that doesn't prove she's stronger. If we were to measure magical strength in terms of raw energy output, that's a very different thing then simply measuring who can blast an enemy further. It's like trying to measure intelligence by seeing who can do the most crossword puzzles. Einstein is smart, but someone who does puzzles day in, day out, is more practiced at that particular facet, even though they might not be smarter overall. I think Alicorn Twilight is still more powerful than Unicorn Starlight. Just not as good a fighter. I mean, take Shining Armor for example. His shield is more powerful even than Celestia or Luna's would be (else they'd have shielded the city themselves) not because he has more Raw Power than the literal incarnation of the Sun, but because his talent is focused on one particular facet on one particular spell. He's concentrated all his time and all his energy on getting really good with thr Shield Spell. In that particular spell, he's stronger even than his sister; whose special talent includes all magic. But overall, Twilight still has him beat on flexibility, raw power, and creativity. In the same way, Starlight shows how creativity in mixing magic, and a specialisation on combat spell can be used to get an edge over an opponent who in all over areas has you outclassed. She's a case study in playing to her strengths. Twilight, by contrast is the literal embodiment of friendship: it makes sense that she'd be less comfortable with spells designed to hurt and wound. Even though overall she's more powerful. In a standardised test (I don't know... Keep lifting more and more weights, over and over again for the longest length of time) that only measured *strength* not strategy, combat finesse and flexibility, I'm fairly sure Alicorn Twilight would have Starlight beat 9 times out of 10. Mind you, you only to get lucky once on that 1/10 time.
@greenorbit65073 жыл бұрын
@@benlowe1701 How does it not prove power? I think it’s pretty freaking clear based on Celestia vs Chrysalis and Starlight vs Grogar amped Chrysalis. Starlight>Celestia>Twilight. Twilight on her own is relative to Cadence; they rely on friendship and love respectively for their true power. We’ve also never seen Twilight dish out the amount of power Starlight uses. She also straight up admits Starlight is stronger than her in the S5 finale and that’s after she told Nightmare Moon “I will do *everything in my power* to bring that time back.” Feats trump statements and Starlight is always shown to be relative or blatantly superior to Twilight.

ngl, lost me hard with the "rich vs poor struggles" commentary - mainly because ... rich people can choose to be poor. if they want the "freedom" that comes with poverty so bad, they can literally just decide to be poor whenever they want. but they don't, because we all know that the middle and lower class aren't actually free. middle and lower class folks still have to work to sustain themselves, often moreso than a wealthy person who's making most of their cash off the profits generated by the labor of others. children in middle and lower classes often have to enter the working industry young to help support their families, too - or have to look after their siblings while their guardian(s) work. the idea of "the free poor" is just a romanticization rich people came up with because they don't have to face the degrading, demoralizing reality of the hard work it takes just to make rent these days. wealthy people can absolutely face problems, but the idea that people starving in poverty have to sympathize with rich kids being bored is ... perhaps a little tone deaf.
