Why are you trying to promulgate a fiction? Golden Retrievers are a Scottish breed that have always been 'golden' coloured or shades from that: Kennel Club 2022 - "Any shade of gold or cream, neither red nor mahogany." The clue is in the name. The Kennel Club recognised the breed in 1920 as a 'Golden Retriever.' Additionally, it's never been an American breed. Please stop doing this.

I had a Golden Retriever nearly 35 years ago ... He was Irish bred with a deep golden almost ginger coloured coat, strong as an ox, webbed feet ... he could swim huge distances, and had the most beautiful loving personality. And it's true you see mostly pale cream retrievers in the UK nowadays. Personally I prefer the deep gold... I wish I had my boy back he was a treasure.

My penny is a ‘red golden’ they’re becoming a bit more popular. They don’t conform to kennel club standards because of the darker colour. But she’s compact and athletic. Way less shedding and obesity is much less of a problem. I think of red Golden’s as the sporty version of the golden retriever breed.

We have had 3 goldens, all males that have brought so much love, joy and happiness to our family. We now have a 2 year old male who is super sweet, smart, loves to play all the time and loves to be by our side constantly. Loves to swim in our pool and then zooms all around the yard! My family grew up breeding both American and English Golden Retrievers. Yes they were very different in body structure (weight, height, bone density), energy level, prey drive, and obviously bloodlines. They are both very smart, obedient, good with kids, friendly, and loving.

And yes the English were definitely more expensive as far as upfront cost because we had them imported from Poland, Romania, Australia, and so forth for the show quality bloodlines and extremely mellow temperament.

I would argue that English Goldens are excellent choices for companions. England has traditionally been pretty careful about breeding verses some North American breeders that are only in it for the profit. Cancer is less likely in a English golden for a reason. In England they have banned televising dog shows-arguing they are counter productive to the health of dogs. Far cry from the American ideology of profit. Just some empirical evidence for you...The cancer rate for these animals ranges from almost 40% for English Goldies and a staggering 60% for American Goldies.. According to recent studies, English Creams are healthier and live longer than their American cousins - but it has nothing to do with the color of the dog - it is all about genetics. The long time popularity of Golden Retrievers in the US led to many dogs being bred in puppy mills. They are of superior quality- the naysayers are undereducated. Congratulations!!!!! You will love your English Golden and it will certainly love you!!!!

This is actually really funny to me. My mom and I both have goldens from the same litter, and mine got the DNA from his grandpa making him an English Cream, and my mom's is a very American golden. The personality characteristics are so accurate! My dog is so laid back(for only being 9 months) and hers has so much energy! Though my dog is taller (they're still growing boys), he has a totally different body shape. Much stockier, whereas my mom's is very lanky like a deer.

We have a male American Golden and we also have a female English Cream Golden. We’ve owned 4 other female American Goldens in the past. Both types of Goldens have the same basic personalities and behavior that we all associate with the breed: friendly, gentle, playful, soft mouths, easy to train, loving and very loyal to name a few. The English Golden we have is definitely smaller than the other Goldens we’ve owned. Our English Golden is also lower energy and is down right lazy at times. Don’t get me wrong, she’s athletic and loves long walks, but she definitely likes to be a lazy couch potato. She also has a courser, thicker coat than the American Goldens we’ve owned. The differences are SO minor however. Either type of Golden is a joy to be around!

I have had both. What you have said has been my experience. The major difference to me is the build. The Americans are taller, more athletic, faster, and higher energy. These are traits I prefer as they are just more fun. Like you said, it comes down to the traits for which you are looking. Both are great.

From what I've seen Americans aren't any taller, they're just slimmer and more athletic, and usually have a darker coat. The English goldens are heavier set and much, much calmer than Americans. I prefer the American type as its closer to the working type.

I had a golden. He lived to be 16 yrs. It was total blessing. My daughter doesn’t remember not having him. He was red. His 3x grandfather was a Chesapeake bay retriever. his name was copper. His parents were named honey and rusty. He and all no’s siblings took after his dad, he was red. I can’t imagine a better dog. He was not neutered and never had cancer. He was an amazing dog‼️ I can’t express in words how wonderful he was and what a family member he was.

I have always loved Goldens. My neighbors had an amazing male named Ruben that I adored. Now my daughter has a 6 month old Golden GSD cross and she is the sweetest baby! She is so funny too. Of course she has lots of energy after all she's a puppy. And I have always known that digs respond differently to different people. But I just got home last night from puppy sitting for her. She hugs like a human and almost throws herself into your arms when you are sitting on the couch so she is laying in them like a baby then she looks up at you with so much sweetness and love! And her snuggles! Oh my! They are fantastic! But we have always thought it was funny how MY dog acts like she forgets I'm around and then when she sees me it's like I have been gone for a long time and she gets soooo happy! Well, when my daughter got home last night her girl had been getting a little restless (like a small child sometimes does wanting their mommy) She was gone Iverson night and it was around 5. I told her she would be home soon. She was doing her snuggly baby thing in my arms and all of a sudden she just froze. Then slowly turned her head toward the door and stared at it waiting. About 5 minutes later The key went in the lock and she went to the door. When that door opened she stood on her back legs (didn't look like she jumped on her) and hugged my daughter like a human and whined into her shoulder. My daughter told her she loved her and had missed her too and her tail started wiping things off the end table lol She is being trained to be an emotional support/ therapy animal so she can be certified to go into hospitals, classrooms, nursing homes etc and visit and just love on people. She is a very food girl. Both breeds that are in her are known for being smart. And are often used for service dogs. She is also a BEAUTIFUL GIRL! She has mid length fur that is golden with kind of a tortoise shell look. ( she looks a lot like my GSD/ Pitbull cross girl who is a gold and black brindle. Only with longer fur and they're built differently). Dogs come in so many shapes, sizes, colors, and breeds with so many variations among them. There is the breed standard when dealing with pure bred dogs but we still must take into account that when it comes to temperament/personality some comes from their genetics but a LOT comes from their environment, and how they are treated and trained. I have seen AMAZING dogs in just about every breed and I have sadly seen dogs that because of their breed one would expect they would be great but they for one reason or another (all human caused) they were awful. PCA I have worked extensively with dig rescues over the last 20 years. My husband and I made a commitment to only adopt animals in need. PLEASE if looking at a pure bred ANYTHING do your homework! Look into the breed and the breeder themselves. Make sure that the breed will fit well with your lifestyle. Make sure that the breeder is legit. ( Are they registered with their local breed clubs, AKC, etc does the adoption include the papers to register your new family member? If not why not? Is the dog bred for show? Sport (hunting), etc ( each breed has their own subsections) are the parents on site? Do they have health records for the parents? ( hip issues for example are a big issue with the larger breed dogs) have the pups been checked for the issues that often affect their breed? Have they had any shots? If you can it's good to see where they have been living. ( is it clean and puppy proof?) Do they have a return policy? (Many but not all legit breeders will say that if you are unable to keep them that they will take then back and remove them) Often times those that you see in parking lots selling puppies are NOT legit breeders. They either are just people who have a litter of puppies, they may be "back yard breeders" or people that have a "pure bred" dog that decided to breed them with another "pure bred" dog. The parents of these puppies may or may not have papers but the puppies can not be registered. And then there are the ones that break my heart. The puppy mills these people are JUST in it for the money and their dogs are often not taken care of well and in many cases are abused or neglected. You see pictures online or on TV of crates stacked on top of each there filled with puppies and dogs. The top crates draining down onto the lower ones. The animals often times are not healthy, socialized, or maybe even the breeds claimed! I actually adopted 2 pups that had been rescued from a puppy mill about 7 years ago. We were told they were pure bred lab sisters and 6 months old. OK they looked like this could be true. First thing I dis was take the. To MY vet. He checked them over and didn't say anything to indicate he thought anything different. Well, it's been just over 7 years since we adopted them and they are both about 12 inches tall! That is NOT anywhere close to the breed standard for female labs of 21.5 inches. It also has taken this long for them to not be terrified of people. We have worked with them and while they are both doing well they are both very fearful. Normally even the most abused puppies raised with love like these guys have been and exposed to new and safe things are going to act as if they were never hurt or scared. I can't even imagine what went I to the soup in the first 6 MO to make these girls the way they are. I also have experience with a couple different breeders that weren't the best. When I was 16 I adopted(OK nought but I hate that term when talking about a living being that will be part of the family) a puppy from a breeder that at the time seemed "just ok but not great" when asked questions about the puppies, breed etc they didn't know as much as I thought they should. Well, my puppy came to my home with parvo! She spent the 1st month I had her in the vet hospital! As a teen I disbt have a lot of experience and nobody was going to take me seriously. I also couldn't sue the breeder because I was a minor! My mom was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer right after I got my girl back. SO my parents weren't in any position either. The other was a situation where the breeder said it was an "oops litter". The story was that while out if town for their son's wedding the dogs got together and her father was also her uncle. They didn't want to register the litter with AKC so they were just fixing then away. My blessing! They had been breeding for 30 years and their experience and knowledge was great! She was an amazing dog and a wonderful part of our family for her 9 years until she suddenly lost the ability to use het bsck legs, or control her urine ( while on my bed!) She didn't regain it and we had to put her to sleep. I still miss her. BUT we learned shortly fter we got her that our daughter's teacher had also gotten a dog from them a couple years earlier. Very similar story. Line breeding ( or breeding related dogs) is done on occasion when trying to bring out a desired trait like in personality or appearance. as it turned out MY dog was WAY more then line bred. From what we could figure out her father was her Father, uncle AND GRANDFATHER! We don't know how much more inter breeding happened. While she was truly beautiful and an amazing family dog. She had a LOT of health issues and her fur was too short ( she was an Irish setter and if she was bred from sporting then her fur was sbred to be shorter so it wouldn't get in the way caught or tangled while hunting. But if she was bred from show then it should be longer and sleeker. ( we didn't care about that we just loved her) but the normal life expectancy of 12-15 yrs was much shorter for both she (9 yrs) and her sister the teacher's dog (10 yrs). So while this has gotten long I hope it has given you some important information. I have seen FAR too many dogs of all breeds that their families decided not to keep then for what ever reason. I will never forget the woman looking to "rehome" the MASTIVE she purchased FROM A BREEDER. Why? Because he got TOO BIG! UMMMM didn't they know going into it that a MASTIVE was going to be MASSIVE? We are talking about living, feeling, beings here! They deserve to be treated as a member of the family and if you can not make a LIFETIME commitment to them then get a goldfish!

On appearance: American Goldens seem to have this gorgeous flowy long coat, while an English is a bit of a mess often. That hair seems to grow in all directions. Brit here, living in Sweden. When we moved here with Amber, our golden, we noted how dark she was in comparison with the Scandinavian dogs which were more cream in colour. She was a little darker than your British show champion example but not as dark as the American one called Daniel. In Britain we were told that both cream and the Fox Red golden retrievers were new fashions and did not meet the breed standards, dark cream OK but not pale cream. I agree about the slope of the back though. I have always understood 'good' retrievers and labradors to have a straight back with their tail in line when they naturally hold it straight. German shepherds etc. to have the powerful shoulders and slope down to hips.

I'm a Golden Retriever owner and breeder from Europe and I would like to add a few comments. 1st of all, Golden Retriever's origin is Scotland, not England (England is just part of United Kingdom, referring to UK correctly is to use British). 2nd, Golden Retrievers in UK are actually more golden in colour than in the rest of Europe. It's incorrect to say - English cream goldens. If you compare these Golden Retriever types - use American type or European type. Also, every breed (not only Golden Retrievers) has its breed standard, but they still have some differences between the lines. 3rd, Please do not refer to European Golden Retrievers as they are mainly just cream versions! We do have a lot of breeders who breed cream goldens, but we also have a lot of dark gold colour breeders as well. Depends on the breeding line. 4th, Looking at Westminster and Cruft's Winners in this video - take lighting into consideration! In Cruft's photo there is over lighting (also photographer, camera gear, and after editing), so it makes look dog lighter than it actually is. Please take a look at this year's (2022) Cruft's Winner and you will see the dark golden dog. P.S. Why there are Central Asian Shepherd Dog (a.k.a. Alabai) in this video 1:15?

We have 2 goldens. The male (Buddy) is a cream color and very laid back. The female (Molly) is a redhead and is very very active. Their coats differ dramatically. Buddy has long mostly straight hair while Molly's hair is beyond curly. They both go to the groomers fairly often and we also groom them at home - if only to try to keep ahead of the shedding. Buddy is very easy to groom and Molly is next to impossible to make her look like a comb/brush/de-shedder has ever been near her coat. I swear combing her only spring loads her hair. You can comb her out, turn your back, and when she rushes by you will see her hair is wild and free. We are thinking of re-naming her to Phyllis, as in Phillis Diller.

Our little guy will be 3 months old in a few days. He’s European, his grandparents were each show champions from France, Ukraine, Russia, and Italy. We’ve had and loved rescues ( 2 lab/chow mix littermates, a golden retriever mix, a labradoodle) plus a crazy Pomeranian. When it was time for another dog, we couldn’t decide (dogs are just so awesome). But because our last dog suffered so many strange and heartbreaking health problems, I studied the research and advances for dogs in the ‘large’ breeds since we love big dogs. Turns out the breeders of European Goldens, on both sides of the ocean have worked to minimize cancer, certain skin diseases, hip dysplasia, etc. They require excellent DNA and other scores in their breeding programs. All that allows a puppy buyer to verify a litter’s health for certain issues, which gave me great comfort. I’ve always advocated and practiced rescuing of dogs and cats, but this will be our last dog (my husband is 76 years old). Therefore we felt justified buying a puppy based on potential good health. I just die when my dogs are seriously sick all the time. We love them all , healthy or not. But I was adamant about giving our last dog a better chance at a pain-free life.

Got a golden for hunting and family time, he is well behaved and has the energy I need him to have for getting through fields and swamps, but also very gentle and lazy around my daughter unless she picks up a toy that is, but all together he is a very good boy and I wouldn’t fret about energy levels to much they can be very calm dogs when trained properly but all dogs do need exercise so you can’t make that commitment you probably shouldn’t own one of the beautiful creatures.

Good video! I love your Golden's name "Oliver"...I had two different Dalmatians (at different times), both named "Oliver". It's a really good name for a dog. Also, both of our Golden's were the American Golden's...Both were rescue dogs. Our current Golden is a mix...half Golden, half Chow Chow...but she "Bear" is so sweet and a beloved family member. I just have a strong fondness for the Dalmatian breed and personality. But, for a wonderful family dog, you can't beat the Golden Retrievers! Our last Golden Retriever (Abbey) was always bringing us stuff she found. Shortly after we had adopted her, she found and brought my husband a dollar bill. We both laughed and said "Oh, she's a keeper"! A few years later, she was standing at the back door, in the evening after being sent out to pee. In the dark, I could see that she had something in her mouth. We were very delighted when we discovered that it was my husbands wallet (which had fallen out of a hole in his back pocket). He hadn't realized that it was even missing, till she found it and brought it to us! Golden's are wonderful, you just need to constantly keep them brushed! They have such wonderful personalities, they are a joy!

I’ve had a deep red field dog, a true American golden, a flat coated black retriever, and just yesterday I placed a deposit on my next pup that is an English cream or as we call them locally a “blonde”. You can’t go wrong with a retriever unless your neglectful and your dog isn’t part of your life. They need to be with you as much as possible.

Great Video! I really took notice of my favorite of the great qualities in golden's. Have had 3 American GR over the years- Lucky, Chance, Lucy (and 7 chihuahuas & horses too, lol). Lucky & Chance (Show breeder - Cloverdale bloodline) had for almost 13 years. Lucy came from small local breeder. Was nice place, very low price, had several litters, but I was questionable if were a puppy mill type breeder. I fell in love with Lucy and brought her home. Sadly she suddenly passed away in 2019 at the age of 8. Since then moved from the country to the suburbs and it doesn't feel like home without my GR's. All that being said, thought you mentioned in video a link to be posted about Breeders . I am looking for an English (preferred) or American with a very light/creme color as was my 1st golden lucky. Our dogs are not for sport or show, just part of our family. Miss our GR's and doesn't feel like home without one. I am in upstate, NY. Thanks

My First golden was actually a deep dark copper color with golden feathers under his tail and back legs. He was absolutely stunning. Unfortunately he was from a puppy mill as I bought him from a petstore like my other 2 females. I learned this after the fact. Now I consider them rescues. 2 of them died young at age 5 and 5.5 from cancer. 2 of my goldens at age 14 and 15. 1 golden and papillon mix, rescued 30 pound of cuteness she was 12 when she passed. 3 years ago I rescued a noviscotia duck toller the smallest of the golden here in the states. All of my 4 legged kids are forces and characters of their own and unforgettable.

My experience with golden health has been just the opposite; my male English golden died from cancer at 10-years-old, but my male American golden is still going strong at 13! Also, the English was very energetic and dominant, where as, the American is quite lazy and scared of everything. The English was taller and heavier too.

i had an "american" golden retriever female, she was very tall, and very dark golden colour, almost "brownish". She was very active, and needed at least 2,5 hours a day walking until she was ~10 years old. She loved swimming at the lakes and rivers. than it slowed down and she became a couch potato :) She lived for 16 years! One funny thing was that she started to sleep outside in the garden, directly in front of the door, when she was older. So she spend most of the daytime inside and went out to sleep in the nighttime xD

Just a precision regarding intellingence ratings. The test actually rated dogs based on tricks : how much time you had to repeat a command to have a first succesful trick and the probability that the dog will perform the trick when commanded the first time. The guy didn't actually test the dogs himself but ask a huge number of kennel clubs which have their biases but it's not that bad. What I meant by this is that this ranking doesn't really describe intelligence in the broad set of terms but more a set of learning abilty + compliance and is biased toward already popular breed of dogs. For exemple, Border Collies are hugely energetic and keen to their environnement which make them very efficient learner for tricks and they are top 1 but this tends to make them quite durpy when faced with problem solving, quite demanding on tasks to achieve and kind of robotic personnality in general. Of course it's a bit of an over simplification and some poeple like having a robot dog actually. The

Our Charlie was a mutt who was half Golden. He was our baby and he loved us very much. He also really, really hated water and couldn't swim well. But he was very much like a Golden in other ways. He shed everywhere. He was very trainable. He was a hunting dog for my dad, and did a better job than some pure breed dogs. He also ate everything. I still bring up the time he ate my sister's Jimmy John's sandwich that she thought was out of his reach. He was motivated to get that sandwich.

My golden I guess is an American golden. He is a beautiful golden color. He’s a big boy. He’s 95 pounds. He is not the slightest bit overweight. He is lightning fast and super agile. very high energy. But super obedient and really easily trainable. He aims to please and is almost militant about it. He is just a thick boned blockhead. He is gorgeous. He’s a carbon copy of his father. His father won Best of opposite sex at Westminster about a year ago I got my dog from golden glory breeders in Pennsylvania. But his father is from Rose Tree Goldens in media Pennsylvania. But I believe they’ve relocated to Georgia. He is my best bud. He keeps me laughing and entertained all day long.
