I've noticed diox violet can have different lightfastness ratings across different brands, despite having the same pigment code listed on the labels. I always wonder about that one.

Rublev did some interesting lightfastness tests last year with Prussian blue and alizarin oil paint. In tints with something like 40% reflectivity, the least amount of fading was seen in Titanium-Zinc, a bit more fading followed by pure titanium and titanium-barite (their Titanium-Zinc alternative), and weirdly the most fading was seen in their lead white (pw1, basic lead carbonate). Though part of the equation would have to be the difficulty of achieving 40% reflectivity using lead white as much more white needs to be used. Alizarin was on par, however it should be noted that alizarin performs much better when glazed.

Are there any pigments that damage or cancel other pigments out? I read that titanium dioxide in sunscreens have to be a certain particle size to protect the skin, and if it’s smaller it actually catches and reflects the light like a mirror and causes more skin damage

We have not done investigations into pigments cancelling each other, or increasing the light that other pigments experience. However, we do test our acrylics for lightfastness, and several years ago we discontinued our Hansa Yellow Light (PY3) and Hansa Yellow Medium (PY73) acrylic paints because recent versions of the pigments were not as lightfast as earlier pigments. I have a painting I made with a Hanza yellow glazing that has faded it wasn’t golden brand paint but it was still sad because the paint color had been labeled as lightfastness 1

Try the the Azo (benzimidazone) yellows for your synthetic organic transparent paints! They are lightfast in watercolors, which is usually a good indicator because oils and acrylics arent as vulnerable to fading as watercolors. The C.I. Py151, py154, and py 175 denote different shades. For opaques, Nickel Yellow Titanite py53 is a great and oft overlooked color, i know for sure golden has that one in their line as well. Good luck!
