In this video, I share my opinion about what goldfish stocking guidelines should be. There are many opinions out there, but basically the more space you can provide your fish, the better! I'll explain why in this video.
Remember, these specific guidelines are just my opinion. But one thing that all goldfish hobbyists agree on is the more space, the better. Goldfish are big fish, and big waste producers. They are not at all suitable for small "starter kit" tanks or bowls.
It's important to note that the stocking guidelines do vary depending on the size of your fish. HOWEVER, that is not a license to keep on overstocked tank! You should never wait for your fish to grow larger until upgrading to a larger tank! If small fish are kept in a small tank for a long time, there is some evidence that they can become stunted - meaning they will never grow as large as they were meant to. It's an unhealthy condition. When in doubt, err on the side of caution and give your fish more space.

All good advice, but the most important thing I learned from your video is the trick of feeding the fish spinach leaves held in a plastic paper clamp with a suction, all stuck on the inside of the tank. That is very clever. Thank you very much. :-)

I have followed Jennie's advice and upgraded from a 15 gallon tank that housed one shubunkin and one common goldfish, to a 75 gallon aquarium. My two goldfish are overjoyed to finally have the home they deserve .^.^.

+longpigV, Haha I wouldn't be surprised if I was scammed tbh. It did come with a stand though but I feel like that's no excuse for the price. In Ireland we really don't have the "dollar per gallon" sale. Sometimes there is small discounts but other than that it's just expensive. Needless to say though, I did see a 72 gallon for 215 euro WITH STAND included at my local pet shop. Yeah I probably got scammed. Oh well live and learn I guess.

If they are very small (an inch or less each), then for a few weeks, yes. But for a few months, no. While they're in the 20g tank, please test the water parameters daily (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH) and do water changes as needed. Even if the parameters don't suggest a water change is needed, I would change the water about every three days anyways just to be safe.

Definitely better recommendations than I normally see. Personally, even with the fancies I wouldn't keep them in less ~30 gallons/fish and wouldn't keep less than 6...so 200 gallons, minimum! Goldfish are a gregarious species and gregarious species need companions...not to mention that they never stop growing. Just imagine Bruce in 20 gallons of water. Poor Bruce. :(
@furripupau
@furripupau 7 жыл бұрын
You don't really need twenty gallons per fish, it's more 20 gallons for the first fish and an additional 10 for each additional fish, and even this is oversimplifying things a little bit. The 20 gallons provides the physical space needed for the fish and has less to do with keeping the water quality in check, each additional fish therefore doesn't require an additional 20 gallons of swimming space, just additional volume of water primarily for water quality purposes. Depending on the shape of the tank (surface area) and filtration system, 10 additional gallons for each additional fish might even be generous.

My friend got a mom and dad goldfish and they had 5 babies. The goldfish lived in a pond in their garden, but all except one of the babies died. It was winter so they moved him inside to a small, temporary tank, but the pond became filled with dirt. The fish got so huge it could barely turn in the tank. They gave him to a better home and they are still in contact with his new owners. He's about 5 now and healthy as ever.

to be honest, due to the limit space I have, my each fantail has 4-5 gallon space. It was unfortunate that I learned the requirement later but I don't want to abandon any of them. So I use a canister filter that has triple the capacity required for my tank and so far the water quality has been very good as I keep monitoring it. I am not encouraging using bigger canister filter and give them less space, just want to share how I deal with such situation.

Thanks this video answered all the questions I have. I had goldfish once when I was kid. That myth about them growing as large as the tank was strong back then. I had about 5-6 in a 10 gallon (yikes). Now I have an issue where I purchase a tank off of craigslist. The person had two goldfish that I said I would go ahead and take. The tank was 30 gallon. I've only had these fish for a week and they have grown. My guess is I'll have to re-home them soon as I can't get anything bigger currently.

I think that would be okay, but you will definitely either want to upgrade to a more powerful filter OR just add another small filter. AC 50s only do 200 gallons per hour, plus they don't have much room for biomedia, so you should look into either getting an AC 70 instead or just adding another small filter to the tank. :)

For anyone that wants to know: If you are between aquariums and are doing proper water changes on a fully cycled tank and are still getting unsettling test readings, try pothos! It's an extremely cheap houseplant that can be hung out of your aquarium and is an absolute nitrate hog. I have it in all my picos and nanos to keep deadly ammonia spikes at bay. Plus the stuff is neat looking when it sends new roots into your water.

To all the people saying these guidelines are excessive or that theirs thrived with like 8 fish in a 10 or the betta lived in it or whatever: bettas are different. they DO thrive in 5 gallon tanks. but goldfish get bigger! much bigger. bettas are also very clean fish and goldfish are very mess and ruin the water quickly. your fish didn't grow because they were stunted or something. And 5, 6, even 8 fish in a 10 or even a 20 is way too many. I don't necessarily agree that they need 40 gallons per fish (a lot of people even say 100) but I DO think a 10 or 20 is way too small for that. even a 40 would be for these. You could fit maybe 2 or 3. ALSO. I don't see why people are so damn set on having goldfish and keeping them in small tanks. There's a ton of other fish that will do fine and thrive in a 20 and that you CAN put 6 or more in but goldfish are NOT one of them. And personally, I think they're way prettier than goldfish anyways. Get some tropical community fish if you only want a 20 or 40. Guppies, mollies, platies, tetras, gouramis, cory cats, etc. Goldfish can survive in smaller but definitely not thrive. especially so overstocked. How would you like it if you were locked in one room your whole life? Your "owners" did "the best" for you but still only gave you one room. "oh we put a dehumidifier in and a heater for winter and AC for summer so he's definitely comfortable!" "oh we put a TV, laptop, and books and stuff in. and some friends and a dog" "hes fine" okay..... but it's still one room. You can do everything right for the fish or for you in this example and. it's STILL one tiny tank or room. See how weird that sounds? And yes I think that size is excessive but it's only because they grow huge. and you know what? if you don't want one fish in a tank that large THEN GET TROPICAL COMMUNITY FISH FOR IT INSTEAD. Or build a nice pond for them outside. Huge tanks for one fish is ridiculous but a pond is really nice. and there's a million other fish you can put in that tank besides a goldfish. Please please PLEASE stop abusing goldfish and just provide proper care or GET ANOTHER DAMN SPECIES THAT CAN THRIVE IN A TANK THE SIZE YOU WANT. Stop being so fucking selfish. Also some people have said it's a scam by the pet stores to get more money... LOL the pet stores are the ones selling the tiny bowls and inappropriate kits!!! You really think they give a shit about the animals? Also while we're at it: PLEASE STOP GIVING THEM AWAY AT FAIRS, SCHOOLS, CARNIVALS, ETC. THEY ARE NOT EASY PETS. Bettas are easy. Tropical community fish are easy. Goldfish are NOT. In fact, they are one of the HARDEST fish. Just please stop. PLEASE.

Excellent advice. People have to realise goldfish have very different needs to common tropicals for instance. Goldfish are bigger, consume more oxygen and food and need ALOT more space. Nothing's sadder than seeing a group of goldies cruelly stacked into a small 20 gallon tank that was only meant to house tropicals.

@Gutbomber, even though the comment is old, you should know that goldfish are not used to stacking with each other "in the wild" because they don't -exist- in the wild. Goldfish are a man-made creation that were selectively bred over thousands of years to look the way they do.

You should get the tank that will be right for them once full grown, otherwise you'll spend more money than you need to on all the upgrades necessary. Also, there is some evidence that keeping them in a small tank and then upgrading later causes stunting, which is not good for them. You don't need to spend a lot of money, there are tons of cheap tanks on craigslist and the like.

I'm keeping my other 3 fantails because I've had them since they were so tiny and i just cant part with them, I'm also upgrading to either a 40 45 or 50 gallon next month, probably going with a 45 I go by the 20 gallons for the first fancy and 10 gallons per each additional fancy goldfish so I think a 40 gallon would be fine too but a 45 would give them a little extra room to grow and swim in.

I have a small pond, about 120 gallons, which had nine single tail goldfish in it. Five died soon after the move (they were fished out of the pond by a bird) but four survived. That was five years ago. Today there are 13 goldfish, three of the original nine and ten offspring of various ages. They breed every year and all I do is provide water changes (once or twice a month). Although the largest fish is only about four inches in size and seems to have stopped growing. If you are willing to provide adequate care, as in monitoring water parameters and performing water changes, then fish can survive in smaller tanks/ponds than suggested. But people should be careful, there is no way that I would have chosen 13 fish for our pond, I thought 9 was too many to begin with.

I wish I could have a goldfish but I only have a ten gallon tank I haven't used yet and since a goldfish can't fit in one then I will turn it into a planted tank for my fish in my 5 gallon.

do you need to use water conditioner everytime you change the aquarium water even if its only 10-20% water change?

hearing that a tank/pond is a fish's world makes me think and somehow honestly mad at my dad decision to overstocked the pond, 8 'cheap' 0.5-1' koi, 1' giant gourami, 2 1' pleco, 3 1.5' irudescent shark, couple bala shark and maybe some smaller fishes that hidden and added randomly. All the fish in a barely 700 gallon pond.. luckily now he agrees to buy an Intex pool that at least 1200 gallon for temporary when repairing the pond..

Can goldfish be kept alone? I rescued a goldfish this week that was being kept in a dirty (obviously) bowl with no filter and they weren’t even using tap safe, I bought a 100L tank today which I’m going to set up for him/her would “it” be okay in there alone? Would this be okay for the entirety of its life? He/she is a fantail goldfish

I have a 10 gallon fish tank and 1 common and 1 comet goldfish, I think their growth is stunted because of tank size. I have had my common for 4 years and he is still 2 inches.

yeah by two years old he should've been at least 12 inches don't expect him to live a long life, the best thing you can do now is upgrade them to a larger tank, try out a steel frame intex swimming pool designed to have little kids swim around in, you can buy 100 gallons of it for 40 bucks on amazon. or maybe wait for the next dollar per gallon sale at pet smart or petco:) hope this helped buying larger homes for our fish doesn't have to be expensive :)

I have a problem sort of. I have a 10 gallon fish tank with 3 50 cent goldfish 2 are pretty big and I also have 2 clear fish and 3 cloud minnow. We have had these fish for like a year now and everything is fine but your probably like that's to small of a tank and that's the problem its over crowded and my parents will not let me buy a bigger tank what should I do? btw everything else is fine its just the tank size and how my parents will not let me get a bigger tank.

I have a 250 litre tank with 4 common goldfish, 1 black moore and 5 white cloud minnows. Should I upgrade the size of my tank. I wasn't to sure because the goldfish only swim in half the tank and the minnows in the other half.The goldfish also seem very happy in the tank and sometimes swim with the minnows.

I'm not sure what type of goldfish Mine are as I won them at a carnival...didn't expect them to live the night but here we are months later, all three are alive still, and healthy and happy, in a 40 gallon. I give them alot of attention and have realized while cleaning the tank they like to be pet XD, odd fish right?

Fantails and orandas should have their own grouping. While they are far less bulky and far less active, they get every bit as long as "single-tails," and thus need a lot more space than 20 gallons per fish. I wouldn't keep a large oranda in anything smaller than a 36"x18" footprint.

I think a 40 gallon breeder is better than 55 gallon for goldfish. The 55 is simply too narrow for fully grown goldfish to turn around, and 40 provides more surface area than 55.

I have a 4-5 inch Koi and a 2 inch comet in a 50 gallon tank and they are both healthy and happy and my Koi just loves my hand and loves coming to me when I come to the tank, the comet is new to the tank so he's getting use to me still but they both get along well now. Is this okay size tank for them? I know they both get big but I don't have the money for a pond or the availability for it either right now

pet shops often lie unfortunately :( for 1 common or commet, you need about 40 gallons! For two, you will need at least 60. It will be a big spend!

Everyone refers to goldfish as "messy fish," and I think that is misleading. They are sold as babies and usually only live to be bigger...babies...because they are inappropriately housed. People think it's outrageous when they find out what size tank they actually need. That's just a result of them being mistreated for so long because they're hardy & can tolerate terrible conditions. They're messy fish because they're GROWING. And will continue to grow and grow and grow and since they're really supposed to be in ponds (oops) but we bred them to look ridiculous & pretty so they would never survive in the wild (oops) it's our job to keep up with that growth (mess, if you must call it that). But I wouldn't call them messy, I just don't think people account for their growth and it is a LOT more rapid and significant than with some other fish. That's my 2¢
