How’s your dog? My dog just had it on one knee. Did you keep your dog sedated 24/7 for a while? I’m having a hard time deciding. Have him in a small room with an actual bed on the floor and if he isn’t sedated he hops up on it and I’m worried he will hurt himself or mess up the knee. So I’m thinking it’s best to just keep him zonked out for a week or two at least to give it time. When I take him out he will already put weight on it so he just doesn’t care lol.

My dog tough as heck, he will walk on it even now and wouldn’t limp on walks even before. But then when he was done wouldn’t put his leg down. Any advice as to how you handled it? Yes, that limping sure brings me back to 8 weeks ago (almost to the day) when one of our dogs, a big Aussie female, had bilateral TPLO surgery. The cost: $6,000 (three grand per knee), which we couldn't really afford but paid over anyway because we do love our animals. Within a week of the surgery, her gait appeared completely normal, and she was rarin' to go! Pain all gone. But of course we couldn't allow her to do that. The main thing people who are considering this surgery have to understand, after the $ cost, is that it requires a huge commitment on their part to keep their dog on the leash for at least 8 weeks, while outdoors at least. This means that people who are used to just letting their dogs out the door to "go potty" will have to accompany their dog on the leash for every single urination, poo-poo, and exercise period for at least 8 weeks (until cleared by the vet). For farm people like us, this was a big commitment indeed. We rarely walked our dogs on the leash because we have 25 acres for them to run around on. Also, you will have to put things on your furniture to keep the dog from jumping up on it. No running, jumping, or wild play for at least 8 weeks! The surgery is miraculous, but the rehab period is hell for dog and owner alike. But it's all worth it for those who can afford this advanced surgery.

@elioangarita2 жыл бұрын
how is she?
@wn97422 жыл бұрын
@@elioangarita it’s been going good so far. Definitely a very hard rehab and takes a lot of work and patience. We had to move a bedroom to the first floor as we have a lot of stairs and is an easier route for her to use the bathroom outside. There have been ups and downs but the downs have more to do with her being still young and very active (she jumped over her play pen onto a mattress 3 days after surgery and ran up some stairs 2 weeks post surgery when she slipped through an open door). Thankfully and luckily nothing broke or got loose but did have to confirm via X-ray which was another added cost. The hardest part is just keeping her busy and calm. She has so much energy and after the surgery she was already bearing weight on the limb. First few days were definitely the hardest trying to help her outside and use the bathroom. She now walks on the limb regularly, obviously with a slight limp or stiffness but every day there are improvements so far. It’s a long road but I know it’ll be worth it. We will need to book her second knee soon so by then we will be pros with the rehab :)

@@wn9742 how is your Luna doing now with her recovery and walking on her leg? It’s nice to know we’re not alone in this TPLO recovery journey. My boy is 1 week post op. Battling puppy boredom and carrying him up and down stairs has been tough.
@wn9742 Жыл бұрын
@@ericalawrence8952 Luna is doing great. Just passed week 12! I’m taking her for her final X-ray most likely this week to get that clearance for off leash activity. Doc wanted to wait until at least week 12 so we can see how her other knee is doing/ progressed so I can decide when she will get that one done. It’s been a journey to say the least. Definitely not an easy one but can tell you it gets easier especially once you can incorporate daily walks. Once Luna was able to get outside and go for those walks even if they were 5 min 3x daily (gradually worked up to 20min) she felt a lot better and helped with her boredom. I also followed the on leash rule religiously as she has a lot of energy and felt back to normal after week 3. I’m probably going to try and wait to get her second knee done so we both can take a break and recharge. Make sure you are socializing your dog during this time. Luna definitely became a little different not being around people but once I started to socialize her to anyone I could find and she’s back to her loving self around people.

NateB - Hi Nate My Afghan Hound is doing pretty decently , im sure theres going to be a long way for his recovery but following instructions of your Vet and keeping your dog in a very constricted area will help with his after results. Mine spends every single day on the same spot . When he has to go potty which he has done that twice since July 8, - July 12, i carry him trying to avoid the stairs. He had the TPLO procedure done , and it supposed to be the most effective one according and taking in consideration your dogs age and size. If everything goes fine he should be back to normal in about 2 months. Probably is much better to go slowly but surely . Hope everything goes well with your dog :) keep updated if you dont mind :)
