Watch Jim Keeling from Whichford Pottery as he talks about the work of Koichiro Isezaki. He talks about the respect that Japanese potters have for their materials and the Anagama tradition in Bizen pottery. Keeling shows us how the path of the flame, over a 7 day wood firing, is used to decorate Isezaki’s unglazed pots and how he makes his distinctive ‘collapsed’ pots. We are treated to footage shot earlier this year at Koichiro Isezaki’s studio in Japan by our We Love Clay team. goldmarkart.com

Keeling speaks with such simple eloquence and mastery regarding this process. He clearly appreciates the process without pompously communicating his knowledge, rather respectfully sharing his thorough understanding. He’s humble. To watch him and to listen to him describe the technical aspects of the fire, the ash and the coals is to sit with an expert who clearly remains enthralled by the beauty of the process and the limitless curiosity of this art. What a truly lovely and engrossing film.

"There is no irony in art in Japan" and that is why i am mesmerized by it. Its not a joke and I have a dream one day to be able to witness it in action. I dream of doing my own pottery one day and I will never come close, but at least a glimpse of this art would be a bucket list experience. Thank you Jim and Goldmark for this beautiful experience, never disappointing!

What a beautiful commentary - revealing the humility and wisdom in the pottery world that makes the wisdom fluid and available. First the material, then get to know the process, then things bring out the character of the material and the process….. you can carry that phrase through a lifetime of making.
