I enjoyed this very much and, as a long time Escher fan, although he may not have had math background per se, he was the youngest son of civil engineer , George Arnold Escher :) thank you for another wonderful lecture made fun.

I'm a 1st year engineering student and just learned about this type of gears last week. I really love how you turned something so technical into these amazing animations. Sometimes I just forget how beautiful math and science are.

Love your videos... May I ask, what are you using to make your animations? I'm guessing you program them, if so, would you share some of your codes? I tried making my own program to make a line-picture after watching your video (nice job there too btw), and I was going to make a program to make gears also, so if you already have a start, I thought I'd ask now. Anyway, I'm making a lasercutter/printer atm, and trying to make controller, protocol, everything on my own (although it's not perfect it does work atm). Also need to make it work with bezier curves (another thank you) instead of just circle(part)s and lines... ... Sorry for long ramble, thank you for nice videos, share your background work or not, still interested in knowing what you use :)

One of the problems with most of the science/math videos on KZbin is that they either not explain something in-depth (most of popular science) or they are 2 hour videos from universities, so they are too in-depth for most people and I think you nailed the midpoint between those two almost perfectly. I only feel like you should've explained that complex numbers transformations more comprehensively.

Involutes are not the only shape that can be used to make gears, they are the only shape however where the gear spacing is not critical, move the gears apart slightly and the drive will still be smooth. Considering a pair of meshing gear teeth as a cam and follower, it is obvious that there are an infinite number of curves that will work. Clocks often use cycloidal gear teeth, meshing with other cycloid teeth of even circular pins. Cycloid on cycloid teeth roll rather than slide one upon the other and give less friction.

dude you are awesome. i just dropped in to check your channel after remembering it (binged your vids back in december and you gradually faded from my feed - youtube algorithm fail...) But this actually is SUPER relevant to a project im working on because i need to MAKE GEARS at some point. This saves me so much time having to research optimal gear shape or just many trial and error cycles (my default method for such projects.) Bravo and thank you,

Absolutely gorgeous video! Is there any chance you might do a later video on the connection between stereographic projection and complex functions? Either in general or the specific case of f(z) = (1-z)/(1+z) mentioned in the video. That sounds like a fascinating subject!

I don't know what language he uses but Processing is a really easy to use language that's made for artists. As easy as Python to get started in. The youTube channel "The Coding Train" has really good videos on it. Good luck. I would have got into programming a lot younger if they had taught programming as an artistic medium in my school.
