Goldrush fever has reached Finland’s far north as more prospectors dig for the precious metal north of the arctic circle. But the Sami, Europe’s only indigenous people, are concerned that digging for gold will upset their ancient way of life.

Looking for gold in Finland isn't anything new though. I'd hardly call it a rush now when it's been a thing for decades... Feels like someone had to be dramatic in the wording to get people to watch this. And most people of those thousands do it as a "hobby" (old school by hand) and don't really expect to find much. Not saying that people aren't valid to complain about the effects of gold mining etc., but you can find a few people to say anything and have it be just their personal experience on things (especially for documentaries that obviously have a narrative they are telling. In general I mean, not specifically this doc.)...

Kirsti! (also my grandmother from Heinolas name) remember: Ilmarinen kyntää kyisen pellon! PS: Marie Boine is such a great voice to the fight for, or against... PPS. I have a very strong voice, but I wish it would be as strong as Väinämöinens...

Cannot believe that Finnish government is so reluctant to protect the environment. Issues permits with no control and monitoring? So sad to see such destroyed areas. I lived in Finland and I have been to Ivalo and remember that forests and rivers were precious for Finns in general, now hearing that no one really cares, so sad… 😢😢😢

there will be few areas with enough gold to be worth while to work on even with heavy equipment. the disturbed areas will regrow in most areas and the surrounding trees will spread seeds and after 10 to 15 years new forest will be growing and local vegetation will take root and nature will reclaim ownership of the land as long as no toxic pollution is present such as mercury which is not needed in modern placer mine recovery systems as well as any other chemicals its all based on gravity /water /recovery/recycle water ponds. when operated properly.

The government should control the environment impact of gold mining, it will generate the economy but there is a price to pay.

funny that arte makes a documentation regarding this, about a month ago i re-discovered gold rush on discovery, have been binging it. its one thing digging and sluicing in the endless canadian wilderness, but in finland? thousands of people? they will scar the land in no time.
