I love the all the social development on the farm. Pablo sees follows Morgan's social cues, so he doesn't try to kill the goslings. Toby and Pablo don't even want to eat until they are doing so as a pack/pride. Bruce never forget his old family, and their reunion is absolutely heart warming. The chickens, allegedly, plot and scheme against one another (I play). It's all one thriving diverse community, like America back in the good ole days of 2019.
@chevydude5o23 жыл бұрын
The brush you're using for Toby is a slicker brush, it's a top coat brush mostly designed for curly coats like a poodle to fluff them out. You will get so much more of the fur he's shedding off if you used an undercoat rake, he's shedding from his undercoat not his top coat. Try a furminator, expensive but works well, though you can find a generic undercoat rake. The furminator has a fur ejector to so you're not fighting to get the fur off the brush
@deed58113 жыл бұрын
I bought one called Shed Magic at a pet store. Works like furminator but it's alot cheaper. I have a medium hair cat who gets undercoat mats. She enjoys being brushed with it.
@emilhallen36633 жыл бұрын
Love the furminator for my dog. It's unbelievable how easy it is to remove tons of undercoat with it
@nstone20373 жыл бұрын
I second this comment. I use a Furminator for my Golden Retrievers when they're shedding that undercoat in the sping. It takes a while to get the first big crop of fluff but after that a quick couple of minutes a day is all you need. Their fur looks almost identical to Toby's apart from color, and the fact that they are probably a little smaller (85 and 110lbs), and I could easily fill up 3 to 4 of those ziplock bags with fir from just one of them from a single brush with the Furminator. I'm 99% sure their fur comes from some sort of alternate dimension of endless fluff.
@brokenglassshimmerlikestar34073 жыл бұрын
I have used the Furminator on my cat before. Kind of tiring for my arms since the brush isn't big and is kind of heavy. But it does collect hair well
@MsSweetpea19583 жыл бұрын
@@brokenglassshimmerlikestar3407 Yes, as above comments state, I can agree Furminator is a more expensive brush but highly worth it. I would suggest watching a couple of Furminator success videos as there's good info on technique of brushing for results. I find many short strokes working down the coat, almost like you are literally "stripping" off their coat. I also find it works best on double coat animals like my Himalayan cat and Pekingese dog.

We homestead, and of course we raise chickens. Nearly every hatch, there is one chick with spraddled legs. It’s always the last chick to hatch. I make a similar type of brace out of vet tape. Works about 50/60% of the time. I have found that isolating the chick is almost always necessary, as the other chicks will zero in on that bandage/brace. Sometimes the other chicks end up smothering the spraddled chick. This may not be a problem with goslings. Always love your videos!

We used a rubber band pushed through a 1 inch length a drinking straw and put a leg through each rubber band loop - drinking straw in the center. Instead of (or in addition to) adding brewer's yeast you could try fermenting the feed itself. I've been keeping my chickens and quails on 1/2 fermented diet and their health and egg production overall improved. It's great for baby birds in brooders too, as they're receiving easier to digest, vitamin-rich food that also helps with any parasite problems and, best of all, makes their poop stink far less.
@moniquem7833 жыл бұрын
He’s adding the brewers yeast specifically to add niacin which goslings need more of than baby chickens, but there’s no standard gosling feed, only chick starter.

Awesome goslings! I have a suggestion you might try for that leg legs issue. Used to hatch hundreds of Standard Toulouse. I took a soft string and gently tied it around both ankles, leaving about an inch or so spacing., inbetween. I left a bit of a tiny tassel on the knot. My little bird would shuffle around , but both legs were lined up together , while the bones solidified. When your patient starts bending over to untie the knot in a furious fashion, that usually means the string has done its work. I hope this may be a help to you. Best wishes from our farm In New Hampshire! ~ Diane

To store the dog hair, I'd recommend a mesh laundry bag. It will keep it from felting/matting. It spins beautifully. Sometimes we blend it with a soft wool to make it a little less hot, but it's fabulous for warm hats, mittens, and cowls.

You could also add Niacin to their water. We find it as the easiest way to make sure our water foul are getting enough since well...they love water. Also the peas brought a smile to my face. Our ducks do anything for peas and I love watching the babies we raise taste them for the first time. As you put it in another video, it really is duck crack or duck quack. My ducks thank you for that tip.

If you're really serious about collecting Toby's fur during shedding season, do a shed treatment. I do this 2-3 times a year, sometimes 4 times, on my German Shepherds, Collies, Aussies, and Goldens. I learned this from a groomer that worked in the same vet's clinic I used to work in. I get a high quality oatmeal biased shampoo and conditioner, wash, then dry (air drying would work, but a high velocity drier works better) Once done I brush them out with a steel comb and stripping blade. I get tons and tons of hair out. Plus it's very clean. That would make it easier to make into fiber for knitting. As for grooming tools I'd advise investing in a good quality steel comb. It's great for getting undercoat out in smaller areas that might be more sensitive, and will help you isolate knots more easily. I'd also recommend a stripping blade, (I like the ones made by Mars) A rake might be helpful as well. If he gets a bad knot, use clippers and not scissors to remove it. It's much safer for young wiggly dogs like Toby. I personally don't like Furminators because they can do more harm on coats like his, and the brush your using is more for finishing work because all it does is work the top coat, not the undercoat The undercoat is what works best for knitting.

I've used this many times, mainly for chicks, but works the same for goslings/ducklings. You should notice a difference within 24hrs most of the time, but keep an eye on the gosling as sometimes they can fall over and get stuck on their backs. Also you could try giving the gosling a bath to swim in, I haven't tried it with goslings but I've tried it with a adult goose and she benefited almost immediately, as when they're in water they're weightless and they can still use their legs to swim around so they can build the muscles in their legs without straining themselves too much with their body weight. Keep up the good videos! :D

One of my ducklings had the exact same problem. I didn’t really know what to do since most of the videos online were about spray/spraddle legs, and there weren’t any that showed a duckling with just one leg that was back and twisted (before now). I isolated him and wrapped his leg in super thick electrical tape, replaced it every day for a week, leaving it off for a few hours in between. 3 weeks later and he’s fine, not even a limp.
