So I had a bit of a training setback with Toby, our Maremma Livestock Guardian Dog. And I know it's only puppy behavior, but it's important to ensure that this type of thing doesn't happen.

I am not convinced that he is a teenager yet. LGDs need about 2 years to be considered reliable. Too many folks believe they are done training when the pup is a year or so old. Well, that's what I've read. We adopted our LGDs when they each were 6, which conversely is considered getting old for a LGD. It's always something, haha. I'm glad that you are taking training seriously, regardless. I'm really glad that you have mentors instead of relying on comments like this one :)

I have been a dog trainer for 40 years now. I have never worked specifically with farm dogs, but as far as proper training for a pup you did exactly the right thing. You corrected him at the moment of the crime with a tone of voice that he could recognize easily as negative feed back. You talk to him all the time as well as giving positive feedback. You are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT in your decision not to use a shock collar.
@alwayshangrygirl463
@alwayshangrygirl463 3 жыл бұрын
I'm so pleased to see a dog trainer who stands against shock collars. It makes me so sad that lots of trainers actually advise shock collars "because they're safe if used correctly", which is horrific! There're dozens of KZbin channels who advocate for shock collars. They all thrush me in the comments, call me stupid and tell me that I know nothing about dogs. I'm not a professional trainer, but my family adopted 15 "dangerous" GSDs and a 2 year old rottweiler who was about to be euthanased for biting. My dad used the dogs for farming. All of them were sweet dogs and I could never understand why their first owners gave them up. Dogs are easy, you give them respect and explain boundaries, and they'll respect you back. Now I own a husky. He's 10 months old and very calm. He's the friendliest chap ever. He can get excited if he sees a dog that he's never seen before and for the UPS guy. Because everyone knows that UPS guys bring treats 🤣. No shock collars, no prong collars, just a simple 'yes/no" approach, delayed gratification training and a long lead (50 metres) for semi-free runs. I corrected him once (slight tap on the nose and said "no" strongly) when he was 3 months old and tried to bite my nose. I don't think that it was aggressive. It was more like "let me taste your nose". Otherwise he's a very good boy, knows tricks and can stay close off leash when I take him to a local shop. He can also say 'hello, how are you?" And thus became a local celebrity. Love him to bits and will never ever use a shock collar on him. The only thing he struggles with is to return to me when he sees a rabbit. Do you have advice how to stop him hunting rabbits? He's never killed any, but he loves running for them. And if he started, it's no way I can stop him. Another problem is that he doesn't do the standard still focus, like the majority of hunting dogs do. So I find it difficult to recognise when he's about to run. This is the only reason why I use the long lead instead of letting him off leash in field areas. I taught him "leave it" a long time ago. He's good at it, but it doesn't work on rabbits. So I bought a rabbit dummy to teach him "leave it". He leaves the dummy, but not real rabbits. Any advice is appreciated

@@alwayshangrygirl463 no you’re right. Many trainers go for the shock collar as an easy fix. I must say though, I have used a tense unit of a collar and it saved my rescue’s life. I had to use it to train him out of biting. I used it on myself before using it on him, because I wouldn’t have used it otherwise. A puppy should NEVER be exposed to a shock collar of any kind. An older very stubborn breed MAY need it as a last resort. NEVER as a go to tool. Same as prong collars. I see too many people leaving them on their dogs as if they were a regular collar and it’s upsetting. They are not dangerous, but they are not an all day collar. I’m thankful for your dad that took in those GSD. They are a handful but super loyal. Too many people give up on dogs nowadays for the dumbest reasons, or try to discipline them in the worst ways.

@@denissefaylo9593 I donno man. My dad taught GSDs with bite history without a shock collar. He did a lot of calmness training (like picnic training) and lots of trust training, some click training. And they listened to him. I've never seen my dad shout at them in an aggressive way. Nothing like that. I used the same technique when training my husky. And it works! I don't believe that huskies are stubborn or unruly or they want to escape from your garden all the time. I think that people who say those things about huskies bought a dog for decoration.

Teenagers. They're the same no matter the species. That "no" was delivered perfectly, both in timing and in pitch. And, Toby, because he's the perfect dog, immediately responded after the first "no." The subsequent "no"s, by doggie logic, were directed at his retreat. A bit confusing. Next time, give one "no," and wait to see what happens. And that "only positive reinforcement" nonsense might work for purse Chihuahuas, but with the strong, intelligent, independent working breeds, it's very important that the line between right and wrong is crystal clear. You're doing an excellent job with Mr. McFluffy.

Your dog is a loveable doofus. IMO, one stern "no" at time of the negative action is enough. Too many stern "nos" might confuse the dog as he stops the action and he keeps hearing NOs. It's important to catch them in the act and use that stern NO at that exact time. They'll start figuring it out. Remember dogs can tell a negative sound by the tone of your voice. They just need to hear it. Whether it's a loud scream or stern tone, it's the same to the dog. Toby is smart and attentive. He was bred for it. A stern NO should be enough and perhaps a timeout if he gets too distracted. And don't forget a lot of treats and pets for positive reinforcements.

Definitely agree, you could see he immediately knew he'd done something wrong and went to hightail it out of there, so the one 'no' seemed like it was plenty. Also looked like he got over it pretty quickly once he realised Morgan wasn't too upset with him which I think is perfect.

Piteus X Morgan, consider using a sound other than “NO” to tell Toby to stop doing something. A dog trainer who worked with me some years ago who trained dogs to perform for TV commercials taught me to use a raspy open-mouth undulating screeching sound to communicate to a dog to stop doing something. This sound cuts through almost any other sound and is not like normal speech, so there is almost no other time other than when he is be disciplined that Toby would hear that sound. And that makes it much more likely to effectively communicate “stop” to a dog than saying or yelling “no”.

Absolutely correct! When I correct my dogs, all it takes it a loud tutting noise, as they dislike harsh sounds and are super sensitive to overly loud noises (one is a formerly abused dog.) I can’t even use a clicker, as she is afraid of the noise. Don’t think that one approach fits all cases, Morgan. You and Toby will find your own groove! You both are doing great! He's a pup he will have faults but you have a good idea on how to train him. Our Pyrenees was good with birds when she was a pup then she hit the teenage stage in her life and she had to stay separate from them. Now that she is 2 she seems to have matured alot and we are able to keep her with them 24/7 and knock on wood no issues. Its pretty amazing to watch a working dog work.

Totally normal, bro. I caught my anatolian pup walking up to one of my hens and stepping on her right before I watched this (because he was bored). He's never killed any birds, but he has been caught 'playing' with the hens a few times, mainly when we leave the farm and the other dog is locked up. Without anyone to play with or interact with he eventually gets bored and tries to roughhouse with the chickens. So we had to start tethering him when we leave if the birds will be out. Only time I don't check on my pup every half hour or so is when all the birds are locked up for the night. Toby will most likely keep doing stuff like that until he's full grown, that's why you have to watch them basically constantly. LGDs weren't originally meant for birds, so it's always a challenge to get a dog that will be a good LGD *and* not want to chase birds when they are puppies. They need some amount of drive to be effective guardians. You are certainly right to correct him, but that's not gonna stop him from being a puppy. The correction probably will have to be reinforced multiple times before he is mature enough to accept it. I find if I redirect their attention on to food, or playing with me immediately after the correction that it is more effective too. The reason is that he's expressing his natural instincts, if they are simply stymied they don't go away. If you redirect that playful energy on to a toy after telling him no about the ducks, he will get to express the energy and learn what is an appropriate way to do so. Good luck!

You are doing find with your training Toby. Being consistent is the best way to train a dog. Do what works for you. Reinforce the good things and giving the dog love for doing good things or just because he is part of your family. He growing fast and seems very smart.

LGD training is totally different than dog training. I rolled my LGD from the day he entered my property as a pup and to the day he died he lay down every time I walked up to him. however he was death on coyotes.

you did fine with Toby - making a dog into a well behaved member of the farm takes time and patients = a lot of commands and praise and correction then repeat it's like raising human kids it's a lot of work but well worth the effort

I like that you do what works and not what you are told the only way is. Some dogs do require physical or shock correction. Some do not. As with kids, the type of correction you should use should be based on the individual, not what you've already decided.

It has been reported by ornithologists that birds will "climb on top of other birds to assert dominance" so you might not have chosen the wrong sex or species, it could be the geese determining rank or status in the flock. You are doing a great job! love you videos
