Our lovely little lady Heidi, the livestock guardian dog is experiencing some serious training. Each day we introduce her to our other dogs, the Nigerian Dwarf goats, some chickens and a few pigs. We want her to know who is friend and who is foe.

My 1st pup was killed(5 months old) last month by coyotes in the front yard. You're right to keep her inside. I have since acquired 2 more and they're never left alone outside. They want to be outside, but it's just not safe yet.

Maremmas are not predators, they have hardly any prey drive at all. When all dogs are puppies they do play fight but they go through different stages of development and they will stop play fighting and Livestock Guardians are so sensitive - of course you have to get your bonding time in, you must have activities with them that build their confidence, they have to connect with you and they have to grow to the stage of wanting to please you - if you don't want them to do something, then they won't do it if you establish the rules. Just be consistent. You don't even have to be harsh about it, as a matter of fact that would indeed be a big mistake if you were. It is ever so much easier training a puppy for this when you have an adult that shows them the way, owever, grown dogs who know this job do not easily transport all loyalties and devotion immediately to you and yours. LGDs are very attached to one or more of those they were raised with, they can be very depressed if they are moved to all new surroundings. You must make every effort to make them welcome and comfortable in your home first and get connected with them before putting them to work. They don't need a terrible lot of attention they simply just need to adjust to being around you and with you and being fed by you and petted by you. It will take a little while but they will turn towards you with affection and devotion and that self sworn sense of Duty they are known for.

(which is delicious!) berries to make preserves / jams. pRoceeds to women seeking autonomy and religious EXIT. robinpombo farms!! right now im in an apartment. i hate CONTROL. i hate CONTROL.

You're doing it all wrong. The dog's learning to follow you and not staying with the goats . You should have got not just one but two or more puppies of the same litter and got them bonded right away to the goats and left them there and not carrying the puppy around in your arms. You do not train these dogs but you condition them. The inoffensiveness to livestock is inbbred and not taught.

Do you have any babies not with the mamas' all the time? They might warm up to her a little quicker than the older ones. I think she is a little too small for the big bruisers yet. Hidden Heights Farms has a couple of LGDs. So does Arms Family Homestead. They may be able to give some pointers.

Your doing a good job use your own instincts because you know your animals thr best how they are around Heidi & it's hard to teach them but you'll get there once she's alittle older & bigger. I'm going to need a LGD here soon when the goats come since we have coyotes around here.

The goats might need to be watched, the ones with the horns, not to hurt the puppy, but the puppy will automatically guard the goats as he matures.,

But she will still have mind of a puppy. They do not mature physically or mentally until about 2 yrs of age. Mine just had her first birthday and is learning but still needs reminding that she doesn't chase the very young kids or that chickens are not wind up toys to catch.

If you plan on using her as a 247 guardian put her out with the goats and leave her out there. This way she will imprint on them and want to protect them. If you handle her too much she will want to be with you instead of the goats
@thisfarmtx
@thisfarmtx 4 жыл бұрын
Understood. We did that at first but the goats were ramming her and the Facebook experts say to not leave her out just yet. Conflicting information everywhere 😊

@@thisfarmtx at some point though you're going to have to let her just stay out there. Maybe once she is big enough that she can get away and is moving really well. Her health is paramount but eventually shes going to have to be out there

And if he doesn't handle her at all, she won't want to be around him, which can make controlling her difficult. My GP knows that our local predators show up around dusk, and 6 a.m. She'll take a break and comes inside with the rest of the pets during the day, but is always determined to be outside at "predator time". Unless it's a fluke, these dogs have a a natural instinct for guarding, and balance their own human/animal interaction. I really hate seeing these dogs made to "imprint" too young, and wind up borderline feral and antisocial.

Without seeing Coyotes and wolves, how will this LGD distinguished between a 'friendly' animal and another predator? Does it need to be taught that or is it by their instincts, or when they see that a predator has killed or taken another livestock that they only spring into action?
