About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.

I grew up with cows, my grandparents had always 15 or more. From my expirience the biggest problem with cattle is that they are way smarter than they pretend to be. And they absolutely know that.

It's kind of funny that cows have a stereotype of being kind of dumb and slow when in reality they are absolutely neither of those things if they don't want to be lmao. My grandmother used to say that back on her family's farm, the smartest animals there were the cows!

Morgan, I’m amazed at how well all is going. Nothing is perfect, and everything changes, it’s true, but you can see in “ALL” of your animals a feeling of trust, feeling safe, and being content. That is all a reflection on how you take care of them. I’m so happy to see your success. Didn’t know what to expect in the beginning, which made watching your videos even more interesting, especially with your talent for telling the story. You make even gathering poop interesting, lol. I’m proud of you. And I look forward to all your videos. It’s funny at the end of your videos I’m always disappointed to see it end. You leave us wanting to see more.

During winter when ground is frozen, use a side grinder and remove paint from a T-post. Add a clip to ground wire coming from box, and clip it on the paint less section of post. You’re grounded from there on. Temporary fix until ground thaws enough to bury a grounding rod 6 feet or so.

Animals can teach themselves how to overcome the electric fence. When I kept bees in Maine, the State Bee inspector told me of a bear determined to get into hives brought in to pollinate the blueberries fields. The bear would back his furry butt up to the fence and then roll backwards, crushing the wire while the thick fur insulated it from shock.

Hello Morgan on the off chance that you see this I’m a fellow bird farmer but work in the residential construction field and have a couple pieces of advice you may find helpful over time. No 1 is when the dewalt drill mode selector is on the hammer mark it’s used for drilling concrete. The drill bit symbol is for wood. And No 2 is when drilling into thick steel (like for the cattle scrubber) a smaller pilot hole before a large diameter hole is super helpful, as well as keep in mind when drilling metal with a sharp bit is that the slower you spin the bit the more it will cut hole into steel- slow and steady wins when drilling steel. The hotter it gets the harder it gets and dulls bits much faster! I hope you see this and find it slightly helpful! I love you channel 😄

It has been suggested before to Morgan to move the hay feeder far away from the fence. He doesn't really seem to accept or investigate any advice from more knowledgeable people. I have seen this many times with him. It does make me sad because in other situations he does the right thing e.g. the chicks at tractor supply

Hey. Love what your doing with the farm but I have a suggestion for Toby. Positive reinforcement is the key to getting him in the truck. Get tests and a clicker. Coax him into the truck with treats When he gets in give him a treat. Then let him get out. Increase this daily and take him for short rides and give him treats when you get back home. This way he won’t associate going to the vet everytime he gets in the truck. This way with using the treats he associates the truck with a good ride and not always going to the vet. Good luck.

Gotta say one of the best things about your videos is you showing your failures or something just not working out how you expected. It's rather refreshing when all you see on most of social media these days, are people that will just show the end result or how perfect something is. Rarely do you see someone willing to show the whole process it took them to get somewhere and their mistakes/failures. You're not afraid to admit when you don't know something and you aren't afraid to just try and figure it out on your own. Also, whenever you are really unsure about something or think you might need help, you're willing seek out someone that can help. (queue my buddy alfred song) Keep up the great videos man!

As an electrical engineer with 1 full day's experience on the job I can help you with some technical jargon. If the 2 wires of your electric fence touch they create a short circuit. Short circuits are bad. In the case of your electric fence a short circuit might burn out your charger (but probably not). But even if it doesn't burn out the charger it negates the effectiveness of the fence because now everything on the fence is at ground potential, which is only shocking to those who were expecting a shock.

A idea for grounding If the duck & Goose pond dose not freeze solid You can use it to help with the grounding problem As Dad has a farm with limestone bedrock at the surface So to ground the electric fence We put a 21' length of 1" galvanized pipe into a pond with a copper wire clamped to it with a ground clamp going to the fence charger This is also a way to ground a electric service when the bedrock is to close to the surface to drive a ground stake

Morgan, thank you for the educational Video. I am sure you’re going to get so much advice on the wiring & fencing, I’m not even going to read any comments nor offer ANY ADVICE! In my opinion, you did what you needed to do under your weather conditions for the moment and I already know you’re very smart and it’s easy for people to give advice but they’re not living it and I just want to keep cheering you on…. People today expect everything to be new and perfect and I want you to know that my father raised our family on four different farms as I was growing up. Some of the fences were not any better than the ones you showed and they were repaired more times than I care to remember. I’m so proud of you for explaining why you did, what you did, & coping with the cold weather so that you don’t lose any more cattle and making it VERY CLEAR that YOU WOULD BE PUTTING IN NEW & BETTER FENCE COME SPRING❣️. I’m sure some people saw the condition of your fencing and were appalled, and wondered how you could even keep your cattle in, but I just want to reassure you that there are many farmers who have fencing just like that, and don’t let people’s comments bother you please!!. You have electrical fence to keep them in and that’s all that matters and focus on your goals and not what people say, PLEASE!! I , myself, truly enjoyed the educational electrical video.♥️♥️ My favorite part, though, of this video, was while you were trying to put on the electrical connectors on the gate, Ginny barn cat was trying to reach out and pet you and get a hold of you but you were too far away. IT WAS SO PRECIOUS😊❣️❣️ She really, really loves you and she’s my favorite cat…(I hope to do a painting of her in a few months when my health is better). I love it that you take those quick little shots of her playing in the hay and for whimsical antics, because I love your interaction with her, as well❣️❣️. Keep doing what you were doing and making wonderful videos!! It’s what I look forward to the most every day!!!!Glad you were able to fix the fence till the weather is Spring, . I’m already wishing it was Spring, as I am very excited for everything you’re going to be doing as a full-time farmer😃❣️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

If you had extra white ones why not just switch out the yellow where you want it and trade for white ones where you took off the yellow...also if your afraid of them pushing fence out.....put hay feeder in front of gate , much stronger and gate swings either way right?

When the cattle trust you more, would you brush them? I feel a strong desire to brush them Everytime I see them on your videos. I love how they're getting more and more comfortable with you

If you think your set up might not be perfect, no one's is! I've boarded my horses at some farms that have had some really questionable fences! I can't tell you how many times I've shocked myself on an electric fence trying to open a gate. Too many actually. At least you made sure to use the proper connectors!

I just watched the story of your high school friend Heather and her kindness. Having just lost a grown son two weeks ago, the story touched me. My son had only one child, a teenage daughter. Since Heather left a young daughter I think that maybe a gift to her when she reaches an age to understand maybe you could gift her that incredible beautiful story of her mother. I guess I’m a pessimist because I believe that the putting everything in the cloud is risky lol. I like hard copy as backup! Maybe a disk drive with pictures & personal note on how incredible her mother was. I am thinking about putting something like together for my granddaughter. Just a thought. I enjoy all your videos!!

*@Gold Shaw Farm* 13:33 You could probably use some kind of spring for tension, to keep them tight but also allow it to streak when needed without breaking. like cut the wire apart & insert a spring, tighten it so the spring is at like 25-50% of maximum stretch, that should hold it straight?
