You can see pretty well in the footage that Toby is communicating with the cows. Whenever they seem to be unsure of him he will make it a habit to yawn and look away or take more distance. This way he signals to them that he is not up to something and he encurages them to be at ease. Must be in his blood ;)

Something you can do to make yourself more comfortable being around the cows is putting pool noodles on the very tips of their horns. My best friend’s family has a cow farm, and they buy a couple dozen pool noodles every summer and cut them into like 6” pieces, and melt one end so one end is like pinched closed? And then they carefully put them over the tips of their cow’s horns lol It’s mostly because they don’t want them accidentally gouging or scratching each other - but if they NEED to use their horns for defense, of course the tips will just pop through the ends with a little force. They tend to scratch buildings and vehicles and machines with the tips of their horns too lol you don’t have that issue, Morgan, but it’s still a good suggestion!

One day, when the cattle is truly used to you and handling, you could try and pool-noodle their horns if you don't feel comfortable or get a vibe that they might be a bit too careless around you. We have one scottish highland owner in our town who pool-noodles one of his cows because she's a bit of a gruff lady that likes to shove the rest of the cows around. So as a precaution she's been noodled :'D It quite funny to see when I cycle to work in the mornings.

@@Annie_Annie__ I would think Kong's are much better at lasting and less problematic at breakdown in the sun... When animals eat bits of foam it can cause real digestive problems. So, while a Kong is more expensive, in the long run, it could be way less expensive than a vet bill for a digestive issue - those tend to be high bc it offen takes forever to diagnose.

There's a couple channels you should definitely check out. One is called Hamish and kylo. This guy has two Scottish Highlander cows. They are pets, not beef cattle. The reason I think you should have a look at his channel is he has a lot of information on this specific breed of cattle. For instance, this specific breed is one of the more gentle and passive breeds of cattle. This specific breed is also extremely hyper-aware of where their horns are. If they wanted to harm Toby dog, they already would have! I think he can give you a lot of insight on their behavior, there disposition and a few other things that will make you far more comfortable with Toby's relationship to them. In contrast, there's a channel called I'm a survivor sanctuary. He has Texas longhorns. These are also pets, but you can see the difference in the two types of cattle quite clearly. As far as the disposition of highland cattle and my previous statement about that goes, you will see that neither you nor Toby has anything to worry about with these cows. His male longhorns name is tex. Tex is very huge but I've watched that man back that big ass bowl down on several occasions, and this is a bull not a steer! I realize you're a beef farmer and these animals in contrast our pets, but I still think you'll be able to learn quite a bit about your Highlanders in contrast to other types of cattle. I also think you'll be highly entertained by both channels.

All depends on the temperament of each individual head of cattle - including bulls. This is an immutable, innate, inborn genetic trait. We've bred & raised a variety of beef cattle breeds for 20+ yrs, had docile & friendly bulls, and others that were aggressive and very dangerous. One was a Longhorn, Diablo. A brute with massive cone-shaped horns, very mean - he was promptly shipped off to freezer camp, asap. We also raised a red Hereford bull from a tiny calf, kept him for about 15 yrs, till he went lame in the hips. Weighed in at close to 2,000 lbs. Romeo was downright gentle and affectionate, absolutely the sweetest. Loved to have his head scratched, and was absolutely crazy about apples. Had a habit of jumping the fence (grass is always greener.... etc), but would follow us back in the pasture like a puppy-dog. Wonderful bull, never left a cow open, gentle w/ newborn calves. His offspring inherited his beautiful temperament, too. Imho, best beef to be found is Hereford-Longhorn cross. Perfect combination of lean and tender. All ours is free-range, 100% grass-fed, anti-biotic & growth hormone-free, which results in a vastly superior taste & nutritional composition!

@@caseymarion2494 I definitely agree that genetics have something to do with it. But don't sell yourself short! I also believe that the way people treat their cattle also weighs heavily on how the cattle act. With Scottish highlanders, they are well known to be overly docile in comparison to other cattle. I personally don't believe them to be the best beef cattle to have on my plate. I definitely wasn't addressing that fact. My grandparents were cattle Farmers most of their lives. They also had a brutish bull. Thankfully, they had an equally brutish German Shepherd called roughneck who could pull that bull into line real quickly by grabbing the ring in its nose. That gentled it down real fast, whenever it got a wild hair up its ass. This same brutish German Shepherd taught my aunt how to walk so he was only brutish when necessary. I believe that Lester's longhorn that I spoke of is the way he is because of Lester. He didn't get him till he was about a year old. Lester is treated him with respect love and play time. This longhorn has gone viral a couple times because he has surprised people in that area of study with his playfulness. To the point that folks for my believe it was Texas a&m came out to study this bowl because they were somehow completely unaware that even grown bulls like to have fun. It sounds to me that this fact would not be of any surprise to you because of the way that you guys obviously care about your animals even if they are going to end up on someone's plate. But I do agree that genetics have a lot to do with an animal's temperament, no matter what kind of animal we're talking about. Even human beings are animals and the general consensus is genetics have about 50% to do with who we are as adults. You know the old nature versus nurture argument. I'm one who agrees that nature is about as important as how we nurture our animals be them children or furry critters. And yes I know I just refer to my children as animals, but I'm okay with that, I hope you are too 🤣🤣🤣 but my point was about the nature of Scottish Highlands in general being known to be far more gentle and docile than many other breeds of cattle, just like certain breeds of dogs are known to be far more docile than a German Shepherd who will happily grab a bull by its horns so to speak.... Well every Pitbull I've ever owned will happily show the intruder it's favorite toys. 😉

@@streghewitch77, you're likely spot-on there, insofar as the nature v nurture goes. Breeds will have innate tendencies, but individuals can vary widely. Those traits are genetically linked, passed on to offspring. Of course, some individuals within the breed will be outliers, such as Lester's playful Longhorn bull, our sweet-natured Romeo, or psychopathic Diablo. We've never worked with any Highland cattle. Years ago they were more of a 'boutique" breed in our area, and now we've got a closed herd & are working to downsize it further. Just as Morgan emphasizes, treating all our animals with utmost care & respect is essential to us, as well. It becomes a way of life, and the animals definitely do pick up on this. Our herd is quite tame, and a few actively seek out attention & interaction. Ours are kept in a 10+ acre set of pastures, w/ access to shade-trees, and a dry barn (complete with fans in the summer). We have a friendly Maremma LGD, too, who also, much like Morgan's Mr. Toby-dog, benevolently watches over our small flock of chickens, & is great at keeping predators at bay. Haven't lost a bird since she arrived as a pup 2 yrs ago. Prior to her, we would regularly lose birds after our eagle-eyed elderly Anatolian mix passed away. And not to worry, we too refer to our critters as kiddos or "fur-babies," as well, LOL.

@@caseymarion2494 your farm sounds absolutely wonderful. I do wish there were more Farmers like you guys and Morgan. I also have a guardian dog. She came into my life a couple years ago. I have a great Pyrenees. I moved into this house about 10 years ago with my doberman service dogs. Within a week of moving in she showed up. As soon as my Dobermans would bark she would run away. After my Dobermans passed I would see her once in awhile but she never hung around or came close. About 2 years ago to two and a half years ago she started showing up here. I'd find areas around my house where she had bed down for the night. I happen to be out one day and reached out to pet her and that's when I realized how emaciated she was under that fluffy coat. It was coming up on winter and I couldn't allow her to be outside it was a particularly terrible winter. So I started bringing her in the house at night when I realized she had some damage to her back end and spine. I of course started feeding her and cut the 2 lb of poop that was matted in her tail out. It was at that point I decided she didn't need to go back to where she was from and I knew where she was from. she was about a mile up the road across the two lane highway. They had another Pyrenean mountain dog that was much younger and a pyrenees/colli mix. I don't think they were terrible people, I just think they were unaware of what to do with an elderly working dog. I don't think they were aware that the younger dogs were not allowing her to eat. I say that because the other dogs were quite healthy looking. They came to get her a few times, but every time she'd make her way back here. I know the Trek back here was difficult for her because you can tell by the way she moves that she's in pain. I guess they got tired of coming to get hurt because one day they stopped. It didn't keep them from bitching to my landlord about it and he made me take her back. I told him, I'm only doing this once because I feel like I'm betraying this dog. I've had several people over the years show up at my door and asked me whose baby cow is in the middle of the road! I finally realized they were talking about her, because she's exceedingly large for a female and does indeed look like a big white calf. Supposedly she's 15 years old. I find that difficult to believe because I work primarily with large breed dogs and ones this big don't typically live that long. She's more or less an indoor dog now. I don't allow her to free roam outside because of the two-lane highway, but we go outside many times a day because I don't work. I walk with her so that she gets to be outdoors when she wants to but I don't let her run loose like they did. I found their other Pyrenees dead by the side of the highway about a year ago. I understand this is their nature that they will take as much land as they can lay eyes on. However, I don't find it excusable. The one thing that this dog has done is convinced me that when I moved to Texas next year to a working farm, I will indeed be getting another Pyrenees and possibly an Anatolan. I've heard that these breeds work together quite nicely and protecting livestock. Let the Pyrenees tend to stay close to the flock when protecting but the anatolin will give Chase for further distances until the predator is dead. Where I'll be living there is a large number of wild boar and I feel that will be a good combination for protecting chickens geese and goats. We talked about cattle, but I'm 53 years old and I feel like that's an unfair age to get into cattle farming. Unfair to the cattle, because like you I believe that animals should be treated with love and respect even if they're ending up on somebody's plate. Thank you for your time, I've really enjoyed speaking with you and I have enjoyed the education that you've given me through your personal story

Somethings I absolutely love about open farm is that they actually recycle their bag with a companie. You just need to contact the companies behind the bag when you have a couple empty one, you put them some where someone can take it (like just outside your door) and they will come take it back for recycling. They are the only one in Quebec that do that
