Great video, thank you. On my 2009 GL1800 Main fuse B is marked 120 + 40, Honda part 38231-SFE-J01, it's not a cover, that whole black thing you see is the top of the fuse cartridge. it stays in with the two screws located underneath. If yours is marked 100 + 40 it should be 38231-SEP-A01 any Honda car dealer should be able to get it. I believe it also fits an Accord

Technical point: spinning permanent magnets in a fixed stator, like used on most motorcycles, is an alternator. The type used on later Goldwings (and some other Hondas) and most cars, is an 'excited field' alternator.

On both my 90 GL1500 and my 94 ST1100 the low fuel warning light failed. This is a common problem. I fixed it by replacing the thermistor located inside the small canister attached to the fuel pump mounting bracket. Simply removed the pump from the tank, then 2 screws to detach the small canister, and cut open the can with a dremel. Unsolder the old thermistor and replace. Re solder the can and re install everything. A $2 fix.
@GoldwingDocs3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is a very common failure. Some of us have replaced it with a float switch and a flasher signal - so when the low fuel light starts flashing, you know you have 1 gallon remaining.

To check the overall battery condition I simply installed from ebay a simple electrical panel. that has 4 positions. One has a volt meter, another has a double USB charge port, next is a aux power plug often known as a cigar lighter outlet, and then there is a 3 position switch. So if there is a issue with the charge system you start seeing a slow drop in voltage. The other position allow you to use a GPS etc. So it is a good $15.00 investment.

The buse fuse to replace the blade is brilliant. I will definitely be doing that. As to the yellow stator wires, do they have to be specific to which wire they go to, or can I just cut the connection and solder them all together as a group of 3?
@GoldwingDocs3 жыл бұрын
The yellow stator wires are three-phase current, so it does not matter which one is connected to which, as long as all three are connected.

I ride a GL 1200 and before that a GL 1100. Replaced stators on both. Soldered the wires on the 1100. Put a new stator connector on the 1200. I'll be watching for heat. Never had the 7v regulator fail. I guess I've been lucky. Put inline fuses on many bikes and carry a spare inline fuse in my 1200. The connector on top of the relay melts also. This contains the main fuse and all power to the bike. Have had a lot of starter relays fail and aftermarket relays don't last. I use a small tractor relay from Tractor Supply. Stators seem to get weak before they quit charging completely. My 1100 would charge on the highway but slow running especially with the fan on runs the battery down. Another problem with the old Wings is the fan switch burns out then the bike overheats. Cheap fix is a heavy duty toggle switch for the fan then watch the temperature constantly. Never overheats on the highway but stopped in traffic the temp starts going up quickly. Turn the fan on until you get up to speed. I added a relay and a manual switch to my 1200.

Hi William, I should note: the blade fuse socket holder I show is only a 30 amp holder with 10 gauge wire, as that's what I had on hand to show. For this application you should use an 8 gauge fuse socket, as shown in the link in the description. That is capable of handling more than 70 amps.

Hi Scott, great info on the 1500 main fuse switch to Bus style conversion from the blade. My question is what amp of fuse should I use. They seem to come in multiples of ten and the main fuse ( Main Fuse B) is shown as 55A. Is it OK to use a 60A? Am thinking a 50 might be prone to blowing unnecessarily but don’t know enough about electronics to know if I need to be concerned about using a 60A and having it not blow and have something damaged. Hi Scott. Apologies if my question has already been asked and answered but what you just described as the engine just stopping is exactly what happened on my Honda ST 1300 and I’m wondering if it’s because it’s the same battery charging design issue. I wound up buying a new battery and that seems to have resolved the issue although it has happened once or twice that the engine just stopped. I have since then purchased a Gold Wing and will be selling the ST and I’d feel better knowing that the issue was resolved 100%
@GoldwingDocs2 жыл бұрын
It could be. If the battery is draining faster than it's being charged (or it's not charging at all), then it's going to get to a point where the bike doesn't have enough power to run. A battery discharged like that repeatedly will no longer hold a charge. If you keep going through batteries, you need to find the cause of the discharge rather than just replacing the batteries.

Great video for the main fuse on a 1500 Goldwing what should the amps be for the fuse if 30 amp is insufficient should it be 40 to 50 amp fuse?
@GoldwingDocs3 жыл бұрын
It depends. The master fuse (main fuse B, shown in the video) in the GL1500 from the factory is 55 amps. However, very many GL1500's have aftermarket alternators installed, and those alternators can put out far more than 55 amps. Pretty mcuh all aftermarket alternators put out more that 55 amps, and Honda OEM alternators are extremely expensive - so as the factory alternators die, most get replaced with aftermarket alternators. The Compufire alternator in my bike is capable of producing 90 amps! In this case, I'd suggest going with the fuse size specified by the alternator manufacturer - or, failing that, one rated for the maximum output of the alternator. I should note: the blade fuse socket holder I show is only a 30 amp holder with 10 gauge wire, as that's what I had on hand to show. For this application you should use an 8 gauge fuse socket, as shown in the link in the description. That is capable of handling more than 70 amps.

@GoldwingDocs7 ай бұрын
A melted battery post is caused (obviously) by heat. Heat is caused by resistance: resistance between the battery terminal and the battery post. If there is corrosion, grease or dirt on the battery post or on the connector that gets screwed to the post - OR between the connector and the wire to which is connected, it can easily generate enough heat to melt the soft lead battery post. Make sure your connectors and battery posts are shiny and clean, and free of corrosion when screwing them in place. Make sure they are also very tight: a loose connection can also cause resistance.

I let my goldwing dit for a bout 2-3 months. Charged the battery, and now no start, just the classic click. Everytime I try to start up. Could be a bad battery all together. Other than that not sure where to start

Hello. I need your help, please. Sequence of actions: 1: Started my 1988 GL 1500. 2: Put bike into reverse and moved back 10 feet. 3: Took it out of reverse, put it into 2cnd gear and turned the motor off. 4: Next day, took it out of 2cnd gear but could not find green neutral light to start. ....What to do to find neutral? Thanks for your help. Marc.

Very often this problem is a failing switch on the GL1500 reverse lever. Sometimes you can get it to work by wiggling and firmly moving the reverse handle into place, but it's not a permanent fix. See: goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=32117

Hello Scott. Thanks for the video and your channel. I just purchased a 97 GL1500SE and want to implement your 55amp fuse replacement. The link you posted shows a fuse holder and three different choices of fuses, 50, 60 and 70. Obviously the 60 is closest but it is not right on at 55. Is 60 okay to use?

Hi I have a 2002 1800 gl and I was riding a 90 mph and hit a bump on the highway and my tail lights and panels went out. I lost the gauges and all lights in the rear. Any Idea what could be the problem. Most likely will be a missed connection but the worst may be a relay. You still have relays for sale???
