Thanks Scott, another great tip, going to order an extra fuse holder now, your always right on point, since 2010 when a Honda Dealer told me my 99 was too old to work on GoldwingDocs and a shop manual has been my savor! 2 99 Wings later and 150k miles plus I've never seen a shop again. Great Scott your regulator saved my GL1000 from running empty again! Got here to portugal in 2 weeks and installed it in 2 minutes !! It took me a while to figure out that this was the problem because the previous owner had no idea of the strange honda electrics, so also very happy with your other suggestions !

I think most old Hondas have that stator plug. I ride a Falcon NX4 400 and it has the same plug. I was trouble shooting a no start problem on my nephew's Falcon. Swapped regulators to rule out the regulator. When I took my bike apart I found the connector melted. Hadn't failed electrically but I put in a new connector. Moral: check that connector.

Great video, thank you. On my 2009 GL1800 Main fuse B is marked 120 + 40, Honda part 38231-SFE-J01, it's not a cover, that whole black thing you see is the top of the fuse cartridge. it stays in with the two screws located underneath. If yours is marked 100 + 40 it should be 38231-SEP-A01 any Honda car dealer should be able to get it. I believe it also fits an Accord

Thank you for your video. My 77 Wing has the exact problem, both fuel and temp gauges go out and come back simultaneously as they please, Now I know why and just bought one from you. My main voltage also fluctuates between 11-14v on a healthy battery & main fuse block updated. my dash warming lights all light up during high RPM on the hwy and nothing is wrong with the bike, should I replace the main 12v regulator as well? do you have a video addressing this problem? thanks a million!

Technical point: spinning permanent magnets in a fixed stator, like used on most motorcycles, is an alternator. The type used on later Goldwings (and some other Hondas) and most cars, is an 'excited field' alternator.

On both my 90 GL1500 and my 94 ST1100 the low fuel warning light failed. This is a common problem. I fixed it by replacing the thermistor located inside the small canister attached to the fuel pump mounting bracket. Simply removed the pump from the tank, then 2 screws to detach the small canister, and cut open the can with a dremel. Unsolder the old thermistor and replace. Re solder the can and re install everything. A $2 fix.

Yes, it is a very common failure. Some of us have replaced it with a float switch and a flasher signal - so when the low fuel light starts flashing, you know you have 1 gallon remaining.

The buse fuse to replace the blade is brilliant. I will definitely be doing that. As to the yellow stator wires, do they have to be specific to which wire they go to, or can I just cut the connection and solder them all together as a group of 3?

The yellow stator wires are three-phase current, so it does not matter which one is connected to which, as long as all three are connected.

I have a 81 1100 one it died and the pos. Post was melted , replaced the battery voltage regulator ignition, starter solenoid and the kill switch next I will check the stator wires any suggestions would be appreciated thanks
@GoldwingDocs
@GoldwingDocs 9 ай бұрын
A melted battery post is caused (obviously) by heat. Heat is caused by resistance: resistance between the battery terminal and the battery post. If there is corrosion, grease or dirt on the battery post or on the connector that gets screwed to the post - OR between the connector and the wire to which is connected, it can easily generate enough heat to melt the soft lead battery post. Make sure your connectors and battery posts are shiny and clean, and free of corrosion when screwing them in place. Make sure they are also very tight: a loose connection can also cause resistance.

To check the overall battery condition I simply installed from ebay a simple electrical panel. that has 4 positions. One has a volt meter, another has a double USB charge port, next is a aux power plug often known as a cigar lighter outlet, and then there is a 3 position switch. So if there is a issue with the charge system you start seeing a slow drop in voltage. The other position allow you to use a GPS etc. So it is a good $15.00 investment.

I ride a GL 1200 and before that a GL 1100. Replaced stators on both. Soldered the wires on the 1100. Put a new stator connector on the 1200. I'll be watching for heat. Never had the 7v regulator fail. I guess I've been lucky. Put inline fuses on many bikes and carry a spare inline fuse in my 1200. The connector on top of the relay melts also. This contains the main fuse and all power to the bike. Have had a lot of starter relays fail and aftermarket relays don't last. I use a small tractor relay from Tractor Supply. Stators seem to get weak before they quit charging completely. My 1100 would charge on the highway but slow running especially with the fan on runs the battery down. Another problem with the old Wings is the fan switch burns out then the bike overheats. Cheap fix is a heavy duty toggle switch for the fan then watch the temperature constantly. Never overheats on the highway but stopped in traffic the temp starts going up quickly. Turn the fan on until you get up to speed. I added a relay and a manual switch to my 1200.

Very often this problem is a failing switch on the GL1500 reverse lever. Sometimes you can get it to work by wiggling and firmly moving the reverse handle into place, but it's not a permanent fix. See: goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=32117

I got one for you, my 91 1500I runs great but if I’m movin at a decent clip and say hit a bump or go over a slight hill in the street the bike stops running, the only way to restart the bike is turning the ignition off then back on and then hit the start button while still rolling or come to a stop, what causes the bike to shut down like that?? Thx

My 97 Valkyrie did that and it was some bad wires on the starter solenoid switch.

Yes, the problem is your Bank Angle Sensor. You can read about it here: goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16123

@@samdomingue8113 I’ll be checking everything this year for sure. I’d be cruising uphill in traffic and hit a bump and it would cut out, that sucks 😬

I usually use lm317s when I need to make a quick regulator for either voltage or current. A couple of resistors and the right configuration can make a regulator pretty quick for whatever you need. I used to build a lot of lasers and needed to make my own drivers.
