One of the biggest misconceptions that I had when I was growing up was that I really wanted to open my hips and keep my shoulders closed. But, when I started to look at measurements of the best players, not only do they open their hips, but they also open their shoulders quite a bit. A lot of them that I see might be 15, 20, even 30 degrees open with their shoulders. Their hips are not all that much more open than their shoulders.
Based on what the best golfers do, I want you guys opening everything from the top of the backswing. I want not only your hips open, I want your chest to point forward and I want your shoulders open. I want you to open and get your chest to the target as soon as humanly possible.
There’s a sequence between my hands and the club and my chest or shoulders from the top. I want my chest and my shoulders to be opening much quicker, sooner than my arms and hands are coming down.
The second part of how to rotate through impact is what sort of tilt should you have. I would lean towards having a decent amount of shoulder tilt. You add the tilt through right side bend.
Something else that helps me - and it helps other people too - is where my eyes go. Where my eyes go in space is going to dictate where my neck goes and it’s going to dictate part of where my spine can turn. I like the eyes getting turned towards the target sooner. The eyes going up to the target helps with the rotation. So, I feel when I'm rotating through my chest is going, my shoulders are going, my eyes are going.
Maximum body opening and shallowing the club is how you produce speed. It's how you shallow the angle of attack. It's how you hit the ball in the center of the face. It’s how you hit the ball high and far. It works!

I have to comment on your videos again since the difference in my game has been nothing short of a miracle just by watching all of your Turn, and Hip Rotation videos. I have been playing golf since 8, always been a long hitter (300+ when in College, etc) and had a 5 handicap at my best. Laid off from golf for 4 years due to a wrist injury and kind of "forgot" my swing. Now I am back and better than ever I believe. Yesterday at the range, I was hitting literal nuclear missiles with my 6 iron, Flying SUPER high (probably around 120-130 feet high) and extremely long with a 5-7 yard powerful draw, longest been around 215, and average being around 208. That's insane for me and my only swing thought? To Rotate my hips and chest as fast as possible in the backswing. This is nothing short of life-changing to me. I can finally feel what the pros feel at impact with their shots, no better feeling in life, everything else falls right into place with this swing thought. It automatically puts my finish position "tiger" and "rory" like, since the speed is so fast the club has nowhere to go but right to a super full finish. I feel I owe you $1,000 or maybe more.

Just had a lightbulb moment in your video here Eric. I'm 40 years old now, played D1 golf in college, 2 time state champion, was a +2 handicap at one point....all those years of playing I never had the technically correct golf swing. I kept trying, but thru self analysis and mixed teachings from teachers, I ended up with a decent swing with good timing. I would try the 'shallow' golf club thing by trying to force it and even till a few minutes ago while trying to open my chest on the downswing and seeing I was coming over the top...I realized it's not a force thing, the shallowing actually makes sense to me when I look at it from an angle/perspective point of view. If the viewer is only focused on the angle of the club to the ball and not how much the body has turned (or tilted), the club may look 'shallow' to the club -> ball plane, but it isn't shallow, IMHO, the club is perfectly on line to how the body has turned and is tilted. If the plane of the hands and the club are maintained WITH the turn of the body, it stays perfectly on line..but IF you only worry about the shoulder/chest turn, then you are actually (unintentionally) forcing the club outside the correct plane and thus 'over the top'. If I try to think of the club + chest + shoulders as a singular movement during the transition, it is easier for me to feel the club is still on the correct plane as opposed to trying to control separate actions (turn shoulders, drop club/hands). I know I'm in the correct place (plane) because my right elbow is near my right hip. I don't know if any of this makes sense, just felt like I had to put my thoughts down in a comment.

The exact same misconception that i had. I used to think you need to open the hips but keep the upper body square to the target. Probably explains why i always struggled with blocks and hooks as well as thin shots. Tried the feel of pulling my left shoulder back during downswing and that appears to be helping a lot. I used to hold my shoulders closed, shallow the club, and rotate my hips. It’s a recipe for fat shots. Rotating open too fast seemed like I would come over the top. I don’t, the ball starts right and draws. Excellent lesson. I don’t know why teachers are obsessed with being square at impact when no tour players are square at impact.

I tried this past weekend to really let my upper body rotation pretty much determine how much speed I had through impact and beyond. It seemed as long as I let everything rotate as fast as possible, for me anyway it felt like the arms and hands were the last things to get to the ball. Maybe that is what the proper sequence is supposed to feel like because there were plenty of good shots that followed. Thanks for another great video…

I feel like an absolute fool all these years doing what I have been trying to do and you Eric have opened the door to happiness thank you thank you 😊 thank you so much ... one very happy golfer right now too eternity thanks mate cheers

In one of your prior videos explaining how to try and turn my right foot (right handed golfer) from 12 to 3 dropped my handicap by 7 strokes in my last tourney, and its continued to drop this month. This lesson for those of you out there is BY FAR AND AWAY the hardest lesson to learn. Let me repeat this; it is the hardest change because of how we have been taught by other pros, and we are TURNING and opening which is equally difficult to change. I've been trying for 4 days and over 1500 balls and it works, its hard, and you would think that you will pull the ball, NOT SO! If you happen to pull the ball, you will get instant feedback as to why. I dont swing as hard either, it feels like I am using my big muscles. Thank you Eric!!!!!

Love to hear of the progress, Edward! Agreed. Its key to open the chest/shoulders a bunch....but want to make sure it doesnt get too open to early. Want to be closed about 45* by left arm parallel (1/2 way down) and THEN the chest/shoulders will turn more than the hips!

This is a great video lesson if your struggling with power, speed and release. For me, if you’re in the right position at the top of your backswing getting your chest and shoulders facing the target as fast as you can is a really good piece of your game to work on. It has helped me a lot!

Very well explained and indeed most teachings are still about opening the hips to the left and keeping the shoulders “late” or “shut”, which sends the club on an outward path (what Malaska fights too) and results in poor shots and a painful back. Thx Eric.

This is a great piece of instruction that works! If you want to get solid contact with the ball and hit it straight then rotating the chest is the key. It was for me. I thought my shoulders were rotating and all that was really going on is that my shoulders were protracting and retracting mostly and my chest was lagging behind which was causing inconsistent ball contact and flight. Only recently have I noticed anyone talking about shoulder retraction and protraction in relation to chest rotation. No one ever talked about this concept when I was learning golf.

This is my first time leaving a comment on any KZbin video but I wanted to say I enjoy watching all of your videos and I even have a small diary size notebook that I take notes with on pretty much every video. That being said, although I completely understand the concept and the type of players it would definitely help, this is probably your most "controversial" video by far. Let me be clear, I am not saying whatsoever that this video is bad instruction but like other people commenting, I'd love to see you and M. Malaska have a professional conversation regarding this technique. Just as long as no one is trying to say one or the other is right or wrong. I enjoy watching and learning from both of you. Keep the videos coming and let me know how to come get some lessons from you in person. Thanks Eric.

Hey! Thanks for the comment and I completely understand where you are coming from. Here are some reference points we use for "stock" model swings of the body orientations Top of backswing Shoulders closed 90* Hips closed 45* Left arm parallel downswing Shoulders closed 45* Hips square to target Club parallel to ground in downswing Shoulders close to square Hips open 30* Impact Shoulders open 30* Hips open 40-45* Arms parallel to ground past impact Shoulders and hips same amount open So if we use this model..... 1. The hips start opening to start the downswing and get off the a lead 2. From about 1/2 way down the chest is catching up The point of this video is that a lot of people don't think the chest/shoulders are opening as much as they are and would be much better off opening them all right away and learning to shallow the club with that instead of keeping upper body closed and shallowing through lateral motion and/or tilting. Would gladly talk with Mike. Send me an email to ecogorno@yahoo.com

At age 50, I am fairly new to golf and I am right now at the start of a 6 lesson plan. The first thing the teacher noticed was that I was all upper body and I was not rotating nearly enough in either back or forward swing. Great video Eric...thank you for the content! IMO, most golfers (including myself) sorely underestimate the importance of turning the chest towards the target. Before I understood this concept, I had a lot of trouble with solid contact, two-way misses, etc. In short, it can cause a ton of problems. I think a great follow-up video to this would be to explain the basic physics behind why this is so important. For those that don’t know, it is virtually impossible to stop the clubhead in the downswing. As dictated by physics, the clubhead simply has too much mass and momentum for you to stop it. Therefore, if you stop your shoulders from turning, you HAVE TO FLIP the golf club...there is no way around it. There are virtually unlimited variations of what can go wrong because of prematurely stopping the shoulder turn. I’ll leave the rest up to you! Thanks again Eric - Chris

Aha moment at 5:42 in the video - i never thought about the order of the downswing like that - essentially you are saying the body should turn open before the hands swing down and through? A feel of "turn then swing", maybe? This video is excellent - has me thinking for sure!

@@CogornoGolf - thanks for the 2nd video link - that explains it! I think there is a misconception (at least for me) that you arms need to get down sooner than body so you dont get "stuck" - but that's not really accurate for me at least. Great looking swing. The thing is, what I see is very different from what you describe. You may be wanting to feel like you opening your shoulders and hips very quickly but impact, you chest/shoulders are only slightly open to your target line. So I certainly agree that once the downswing begins by beginning the weight shift to the left foot (heel), the hands have begun to drop to shallow out the club and the hips have begun to rotate toward the target, the shoulders should rotate quickly but smoothly for power and consistency.
@CogornoGolf

Hey Roland! Thats exactly the point! Most people need to FEEL they are way open so that they are ACTUALLY only slightly open!

@@CogornoGolf Thanks for the reply. Thanks for clarifying. I know for many years I was trying to do just what you described (rotating hips and shoulders immediate from the top of the backswing) which caused me to do all kinds of bad things like getting trapped inside, not being able to square the clubface, and casting. Of course I only had half (or less) of the story. It was actually only recently that I learned to delay that rotation until I started my weight shift and my hands started to drop. Now I can fire my hips and shoulders as fast as I want with great consistency and control because I'm in the proper position. Power is now effortless which also means consistency. Still not a really big hitter but my driver clubhead speed has increased from around 85 to 105 in the last year (been playing 27years). And I love it when I hear teachers like you confirming the things that I have recently discovered. And I don't have to take ibuprofen and muscle relaxers before I play just to be able to finish a round. Golf is fun again. Roland

Eric, I must compliment you on your approach to identifying the action, form and timing of the upper body. I worked specifically on your maxim to "open up the shoulders and chest as quickly as possible from the start of the transition". I realize this doesn't apply to all golfers but it certainly resulted in creating more clubhead speed, accuracy and ball compression for me. I've been mentally stuck for years with the concept of keeping my back to the target on the downswing in order to avoid coming over the top... all that usually resulted were thin shots, hollow contact and a decrease in distance as I flipped through impact due to my limited rotation through the ball. THANKS MUCH for your aggressive philosophy related to encouraging a powerful rotation throughout the downswing. Cheers, Ned

@@CogornoGolf Hi Eric, Thanks for the reply. I was lucky to have a teacher in my youth (Art Ashton), back in the 1970s in Los Angeles, that actually learned how to teach from the great Tommy Armour back in the 1940s. He spent two weeks watching Armour with students from sun up to sun down in Florida (He gave Armour his life savings of $200 for the privilege.). I was fortunate to receive so such incredible wisdom at an early age (Ashton would tell me that there were only 2 people at the time that truly knew the golf swing - Tommy Armour and Bobby Jones; Hogan and the rest didn't know what they were talking about).. Much of your approach reminds me of those lessons. The next area of concern regarding my swing is increasing my shoulder turn -- I can get the turn with drills but for some reason I seem to abbreviate my backswing once a ball is in front of me (a bit ball bound I suppose). I'm 63 years of age with a 5 hdcp, but determined to get down to a 2 or 3 despite the lack youthful power that I once had. I'm 6 foot 5 inches tall, so there's still a good arc size to work with. Anyway, looking forward a a possible video lesson in the near future. Keep up the good work. And, as a TV Director and Filmmaker, I compliment you, also, on your video production values. Awesome. Everything you say makes perfect sense. However, having the chest open while arms remain behind is very tricky to do. One drill to consider is to have someone place an alignment stick across your arms at top of swing and try to keep the stick on your arms for as long as possible to slow the arms down. Any other drills that you can recommend to slow arms ?

Great video and tremendous swing AS ALWAYS!. Although it has taken me decades to learn these things, I agree with everything you said in this video ... except, don't you want to feel that your hips are rotating slightly ahead of the rotation of your shoulders? When your entire upper body drops down slightly at the beginning of the downswing and your hands swing away from the target for just a brief moment, these moves delay the unwinding of the shoulders and cause the shoulders to rotate slightly behind the rotation of the hips in my opinion. If I maintain the proper spine angle, and my hips lead the way, my shoulders seem to follow nicely. I like feeling the hips, shoulders, hands, and clubhead are rotating and swinging through contact in this order. You disagree? I Just read the explanation you gave to one of the other comments. I would say that even though the hips rotate less, they still have to lead the way for two reasons: the hips, in my opinion, definitely rotate open but stop just before contact, and if the shoulders rotate too quickly, they will catch up to to the hips too quickly. (I admit our difference of opinion may be too subtle to be of any significance as long as the hips can somehow reach around 45° open at contact, as you mentioned.)

Which is what I see that could happen. Your entire body rotating simultaneously could easily cause an over the top move. That's also a good point about the hands dropping to prevent over the top. It seems that it could cause an out to in swing, which could cause 2 misses. A slice, or a pull if your hands & arms aren't in sync, as well as a loss of distance due to a lack of coil resistance.

Good ball strikers rotate EVERYTHING....A LOT....and shallow their arms/hands/club. That's based on every 3D measurement report I've ever seen. I'm presenting this information to you guys not based on my opinion, but based on the current set of factual measurements that we have in 2018.

I like your instructions, clear and they do make sense. I have a hard time trying to reconcile some of the things you teach vs Bobby Lopez, who is all about keeping the head behind the ball and not 'going offside'. He proposes that the 'hands win the race' on the downswing meaning the hands pass by the shirt-buttons on the way to the ball. What you're teaching is totally opposite, correct? I'm not meaning to criticize, just looking for clarification. FYI, I've tried Bobby's method and I still suck!

@Jason: Yes, I was about to use Larry Rinker (upper core) as an example. Use arms, wrists, hands and swing past your body, letting them drag your shoulders open. Credit to Eric for mentioning there are other approaches. I tend to find that Rinker's method is easier on my body, but that Eric's gives me more power. Being 69 with an arthritic back I may HAVE to use the former, but honestly I'd like to use the latter. Eric's explanations are clear and concise, and I still watch his videos.

For a lot of years I followed the whole “keep your back towards the target as long as possible” and “fire your hands/arms first and body will follow” thought but that always led to the early extension. Glad I saw this video. Tired of trying to keep my back against the target during the downswing as I was taught before. If you’re opening your chest early though and trying to leave your hands behind, why do I sometimes hit it fat and my impact is behind the ball? Is there such a thing as leaving the hands too far behind and getting dumped under? Or is it more of a weight shift issue and I have to move my trail leg forward and it has nothing to do with the hands being behind?

You're right, Eric. There are 1,000 videos on "separation" where they want back to the target, hips open. My left arm is tight to my chest and when I open everything I come way over the top, that's the problem. I used your shallowing drills but almost lost an eye and busted the stick. lol I suspect anybody coming way over the top for decades will never get under that stick in your drills. I can break 80 and can't even come close to getting under that stick and if I do my swing speed is garbage. Bobby Lopez says the exact opposite. Chest points to 2 o'clock and hands move, chest doesn't, starting down. Now I'm 100% confused.

Eric, Fantastic video and advice! "Opening Everything" is the most enlightening phrase in golf I have ever heard. I have been hitting golf balls in the driving range for 30 years trying everything by holding my right shoulder back, trying all kinds of manipulation, adjustments but keeping my right shoulder closed resulted in varying degrees of success that never was consistently repetitive enough. I have not tried out your advice yet but I am going to do it today and am very sure it will work." Opening Everything" is the key word ,and not holding the right shoulder back is another essential I believe. From today onwards my mantra shall be "Opening Everything". Eric, just for your info, I am not called the "Driving Range Pro" for nothing. I spent 95 - 97 % of my time in golf hitting golf balls in the driving range with only 3 - 5 % playing golf for the last 30 years.I will hit anywhere from 300 -600 balls per session. Many years ago, I hit a thousand balls a day for a period of time trying all kinds of swing and "manipulations".I am eagerly looking forward to try out your advice later this evening. I stopped going to the pros because I was not getting results from them and then embarked on a long journey of self-learning without much success. My experience with the coaches and observation of other golfers' experience with golf coaches led me to conclude and come up with the phrase - "Golf cannot be taught. It can only be learnt". You have given me good reasons to reconsider this belief.

Agreed, that would be a good conversation. No doubt, the best ball strikers are expert sequencers. The "race" analogy is more like your body is on the same relay team, where the final "baton pass" is just after impact. At that point, the arms have caught the shoulders. Please do a followup on the sequencing, no doubt your audience will love it. Great job getting a ridiculous amount of high quality segments out at such a fast pace.

My exact thought... Why whoud anyone teach a spin out move? Tiger himself, along with butch Harmon said that the spin out drop club move is a big swing killer. Tiger even said he feels the arms drop before he turns. This guy isn't actually doing what he is drilling. That spin out end of club going closer to the ball move makes a flip. He is just naturally good at putting the club on the ball. Guarantee he is connected in his swing and he keeps the club in front of him. In his "eyes going at the target" drill he stands up before his club gets to the ball. No way any of this bullshit will help anyone...
