A clubface that is square or closed makes it easier to compress the golf ball. And where the clubface is at the delivery position - or at last parallel - will dictate your release pattern, your body angles and your compression. In this video I’m showing you how to use your grip and wrist conditions to get your clubface in the best position to compress the ball and some drills you can use to practice.

A lot to unpack here. There’s a lot of information in here and it’s all really good. I feel like, after grip and setup, this is one of the first things people should learn. If there is a secret to golf, this is it. This is why beginners hit crazy slices, even when they sometimes have pretty good natural swings. Instead of doing this, they start flipping to close the face. They need to know all this to avoid ruining their swings. This video belongs on a playlist of mandatory golf viewing.

This is a key area for me. In the past week I've got a lot more awareness that my face was open and leaving me with high, weak shots to the right half the time, and the other half straight, but still high. I've been taking the clubface back closed, with a stronger left hand on my grip and definitely loses the high fade and adds distance. Needs more practice, and to watch this a few times, but I think will help a lot. I did notice that with my driver, with its mid-size grip, I don't need to have such a strong left-hand. Plenty to work on over the festive season.

Love this video and the fact you are not discouraging a strong grip. I always hated when I competed in school how instructors tried to change my grip to a neutral grip. Spent more time frustrated with a neutral grip eventually always going back to a stronger grip to hit the ball well. It always felt much more natural too me.

This blows my mind! I've always thought that the clubface should be parallel to the back of the left wrist to be square. That toe down position sure looks closed to the swing plane to me. I hit a few shots using your drill and compressed the 8 iron. I have always had trouble compressing my irons. That toe down still looks closed to me, but i will try your drills and see if they help my iron shots. Great videos!

I really needed this and I will definitely try this on the range. I can really see myself when you're saying that the face is open both during the takeaway and in the downswing. I produce a good straight shot, but my 7-iron and woods are towering shots landing softly, not penetrating the air really. I have recently changed my grip to a weaker grip and will try and change that for later. Thanks!

Eric, great stuff as always. I appreciate your ability to communicate effectively. I have been trying a stronger grip in order to achieve better compression. However, as you mentioned in this video, pull hooks can occur. You mention something about getting the right shoulder to externally rotate to prevent the pull. Can you use a different word to explain what the right shoulder should be doing? I’m thrown by externally rotate. Thanks for your videos, they help make my frustrations explainable.

Eric, I understand and am all for closing the face more on the way down and that feel, but I checked videos for that and while such a clubface tilt can indeed be seen in many backswings at that position, that can not be seen or is much less extreme than you suggest here at the downswing one. I checked the Bill Haas one on V1, and DJ&Rahm as they are extreme left wrist bowers. Rahm has a bit with an iron, but none with the driver.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 5 жыл бұрын
Hey, Thanks for the feedback! Yes we are only looking for slightly tilted down... As with all of the other videos, I generally want you to OVERDO something to find middle. IF youre someone who is normally more toe up or open from toe up...you are at VERY LITTLE risk of tilting down too much with irons! Or just find a middle that you like!

How much (driver) clubhead speed do you need in order to implement this face down method for your irons? I average about 105 mph and it works fine for my irons but can my sister who averages muss less can use it for her irons? She hits a 7 iron like 120 yards carry, so she is not completely short but not long either

I feel this helping by just watching. There’s a par 4 on 7th hole at my course I play at 235 hit a terrible slice with hardly any compression and I hit the green probably 7-10 times but a lot of work to do it. I feel with this I can start stepping back to the 300 yard tees and nail it. It’s crazy how inconsistent I am. I can hit anywhere from 300+ to 200 with driver. I feel like if I hit the ball consistently I’m going to be a problem

@@JBALLER02 shit you not. I’m a 7.2 handicap and could be scratch if I stop doing this crap. Guy at the clubhouse says why didn’t you hit that one like the last one you hit. I can score anywhere from a 35 on 9 to a 45. Depends on what the driver is doing. That’s a rough estimate. I have hit my driver up to 327. Have cleared 300 more than I can count. But I can also hit a hossel rocket or hit the top of the face and hit it 180. I’ve got the stats on 18 birdies to back it up. Every other part of my game is consistent.

learning to play in western okla. on rock hard fairways i developed a shallow "clip" contact. not much divot at all. that was in the 70's. now, that habit is still there but i don't have the speed anymore. the result is a shot with not much spin into a green. i've always used a slightly weak grip and like all others did the toe up thing as well. anyway....with a driver i have a stronger grip and on the way down i do that thing you showed with wrist angle etc....i call that "turning the screw" (like left hand turning a screwdriver). when i do that with irons i get a lot of toe action or a very solid strike. is it as simple as moving an inch closer at address?

Yup. All depends on how much speed you do or don't have. More speed you have the more you can do it as the clubs get longer. Less speed you have the less you can do it as the clubs get longer. If you don't have enough speed you NEED the loft to get the ball high enough to carry far enough

Scott Taylor I think the idea is more that at last parallel (when the club is last level with the ground before impact), the SHAFT will line up over the stick. The club head does not trace from the back of the stick along the stick to the ball. The club head will be behind you, the shaft will line up over the stick, then you work the club down and out to the ball. An overhead view would make this clearer. Eric has another video that makes this a little more clear: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4HWen1qgpeiibs

It seems to me that a flipper is used to releasing power through a quick backswing and then stoppping that on the way down to release the club. What is a better Takeaway sequence for using this strong grip and closed club face position?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Freddie! I do not see the takeaway/backswing speed as a huge reason for a flipper. I see 90% of the time its a too open clubface OR too steep of a downswing. So I would focus on improving those if someone flips...takeaway/backswing checkpoints would be the same for everyone.

Tiger called it TRAPPING the golf ball against the turf. Compression happens anytime a clubhead with enough speed hits the golfball no matter the orientation of the clubface.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 5 жыл бұрын
Hey-thanks for the message! The orientation of the club face both horizontally (open or closed) and vertically (dynamic loft) plays THE MOST IMPORTANT role in how much "compression" or the amount of "spin loft" someone has. Thats measured-not opinion.

A while back I did this. Problem was my swing plane was incorrect. When I fixed my plane I started hooking the ball off the planet. Closing the face at address can help you in the middle of the round but in the long run, it is masking a fault.

@@clnorris82 I agree. I have done it as a quick fix and it helps, but you simply cannot hit it pure when doing it. The stronger grip it what fixed it for me. (lately anyway - lol)

@@perkyb1213 I would encourage you to also check your rotation. When I really got my shoulders rotated and felt a deep turn my ball striking improved tremendously and found that I did not need such a strong grip. Again, swing plane has a lot to do with this and Eric's video and teaching really got this squared away for me. Video is so important. I can't fix what I can't see and when I videoed my swings and posted to Eric's Facebook community he really dialed in the areas I needed to improve. in 30 days I have gone from a 15 to a 12 and trending lower because I am hitting more GIR.
