Thanks Eric, I watched the video a couple times this week and tried it on the range today. I didn't think it would work for me because I have a tendency to get stuck, usually pushing the ball right but on occasion hooking the ball. I thought this suggestion would make me even more stuck. I was wrong and pleasantly surprised. I hit the ball straighter than I have in a long time and many of the shots felt effortless and pure. I still have to work on my timing but I would think the release at the top and wider arc would lead to increased distance. Looking forward to beating some more balls with this swing thought in mind. Thanks again, Kevin

It’s amazing how something the pros make look so simple can involve so many data points that amateurs don’t do properly that they would never see for themselves or even begin to imagine as something to consider. Awesome work done; really useful content here!!! I would love to see a video on how elevating the right foot at impact affects the swing. Thank you again
@CogornoGolf4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Alvaro! Usually elevating the right foot bring your quad and right hip IN toward the ball and UP. Because it brings your hip IN it usually creates a reaction of your upper body to go BACK (or stand up). Generally leading to "early extension". Which then causes reaction of lengthening the arms too soon and release wrist angles. Which leads to contact issues and direction control issues Good topic....see if some of these help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKPRhpWZqp6fpLM kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppW1mqaBjrl0oMU kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpStqZqOf8yfgdE

Eric, watching the pro swings you show, critical to your explanation is the maintaining of the arm positions achieved at the top of the backswing, left arm close to the chest, well into the downswing. The wrist and forearm positioning seem, to me, to be the easy part of the goal. Maintaining that structure, alone, goes a long way to resulting in the desired clubhead positions.

Hi Eric....great observation, but, in a good swing that happens automatically. For me... that is the only way to really engage my right hip and body against the ground, utilizing the centrifugal forces that most people have no clue how to achieve; that is why the club goes away from the target at the beginning of the downswing, and then the club works back into you, which is called centripetal force, keeping the centrifugal forces in check by going around the corner after impact, meaning...keep turning left or else. The biggest problem I see...is the stupid ball in from of us, people just want to clobber the thing coming over the top, instead of sweeping it, with a sound golf swing AROUND and underneath your body and in plane, effortlessly. That is my humbled view of the game. I know you know all this of course, but most of your viewers don't. Very good video again as usual.

I am always impressed with the analysis you have done in order to present a video of this complexity to us. When you say that most of us don’t get back far enough, that draws me to the question of flexibility. It seems to me that the arc of the clubhead and hands may be related to one’s ability to turn hips and shoulders. The other issue that I think you noted was how high or flat the backswing is. It almost seems as if each of us needs a swing analysis to work from our flexibility and our inclination for a high or a flat backswing in order to determine what the ark of the hands in the club should be. Anyway, great video. I will watch this repeatedly. I know I don’t get far enough back. I know I don’t settle my backswing and I know I don’t extend through the hitting area before allowing the club to pull me up. I have my agenda for a lifetime

Great video! I think too many commentators confuse this subject and push the lag idea. They show a face on view of Sergio and talk about the angle of his shaft to his arms and how close the angle gets in transition but from down the line, the angle doesn't really change. The club head just goes behind him and down. So we all cup our wrists to narrow that angle and get lag instead of letting the club work like you're saying. Well explained.

Tried this today at the range. Wow. My swing plane has always been too steep, leading to inconsistent contact and loss of power. Just thinking of having the club head move away from the target and behind me made an enormous difference. I didn't realize it until I re-watched this video, but I actually felt the lengthening of the right arm you discuss. The trajectory went from rather low (my normal flight) to towering, and the distance had to be a good 10 yds farther then normal if not more. Can't wait to try it on the course. Great video!

I tried this first time Eric suggested this and couldn’t make it work. Revisited this allied with an improved weight shift and better grip and found this is an invaluable spot ! And a great tip. Great lesson. I never gave a lot of thought to moving the club back from its position at the top. I think I do that but will have to video to check. One thing I noticed in all the slo-mo pro swings was a swing thought at the top that my Dad (a scratch golfer) used to tell me which I find helpfu. He said that when I start my downswing I should think of pulling on a rope to ring a bell which helped me maintain my arm extension until my hands were about at wais height. I still use that thought. Looking at the pro swings it seems that this jives with what you're saying minus the backward movement of the club head. Your thoughts?
@CogornoGolf4 жыл бұрын
Hey Miles! I think if that helps you create good motion and hit the ball well that that works! Depending on some other factors some people will be better off feeling the arms and hands doing nothing from the top, others will be better feeling the arms and handing starting down, others pulling, etc No one of those is universally correct for everyone from my perspective. Depends on where you are at the top and what other variables are in your downswing to match that

As a former tennis professional what you are describing is essentially hitting a forehand movement from from the top of the forehand down to trail arm parallel. How does that relate to the concept of extension of the trail arm up and back from the top and the movement of the lower body towards the target? Is it the turning of the lead hip inside the lead foot? Is it the rotation of the lead knee back behind you? Or can you assume that if you focus on the extension of the trail arm in the downswing and the turning of the hips inside the lead foot that all other aspects generally speaking will naturally align to allow the club path to come to the ball from the inside? BTW you and the other professionals you bring onboard on your team for the videos, notwithstanding golf swing knowledge, are excellent communicators. Thanks Steve

This makes total sense. I've found that arm and wrist tension each have to be minimal. Oily wrists and soft hands will allow this to happen. On the other hand, tension is arms and hands is a big cause of pulling down from the top and hitting with arms and shoulders and not swinging and using rotation to deliver speed.

My question is about parrallel right shoulder outward rotation with inward left shoulder rotation. how does this affect distance? and what is the timing like as you drop into the slot? Am I trying to keep the angle of my swing below an imaginary 60 degree line?

Hey! If Im understanding you correctly some of these should help Trail shoulder downswing: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHbYeaVpes14idU&pp=ygUlRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHJpZ2h0IHNob3VsZGVyIGRvd25zd2luZw%3D%3D kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYLPfaWEo8qjha8&pp=ygUlRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHJpZ2h0IHNob3VsZGVyIGRvd25zd2luZw%3D%3D kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpbJi4CLpbiobLc&pp=ygUlRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHJpZ2h0IHNob3VsZGVyIGRvd25zd2luZw%3D%3D kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6i0o6Nun72fmJY&pp=ygUlRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHJpZ2h0IHNob3VsZGVyIGRvd25zd2luZw%3D%3D kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGm6hqeJhdOcjs0&pp=ygUlRXJpYyBDb2dvcm5vIHJpZ2h0IHNob3VsZGVyIGRvd25zd2luZw%3D%3D

That stupid Ben hogan book caused millions of golfers to take back club wide and come down shallow. He even drew it out. I was lucky 15 yrs ago my teacher showed me Erie els swing and how wide he came down, so thanks Ben hogan for causing bad swings and thanks Eric for an awesome video

Could they be doing this to give the body a split second more to move to a better strike structure? It seems the rt arm can most easily accomplish this by a slight rt elbow move toward the left elbow and slight push away from the body. Today i will experiment. Thanks.

Lots of micro movements going on as to why,...

Wow! I‘m really impressed by your explanations and the way you present your videos. Very informative and well structured. You made me leave my first comment on KZbin ever. ;) Keep up the great work!

Is the laying off and wrist flexion at the beginning of the downswing the natural result of a relaxed swing + good lower body and shoulder movement?
@RainbowFactory15 жыл бұрын
By "relaxed swing" I mostly mean a relaxed grip/wrists.
@CogornoGolf5 жыл бұрын
Ideally its happening naturally through body motions, but if its not....you need to do something to make it happen..

Would this laying back of the club on the down swing come more naturally if you use the squat (that you showed) move to began the down swing?

Definitely!

How about left arm rotation during downswing?

Yup...we have a bunch of videos on that topic specifically if you search!

Will getting the club more behind you increase the potential for “getting stuck”?
@CogornoGolf4 жыл бұрын
Yes....if you don't rotate (turn) enough.

Eric I can't see how you can 'straighten' the right arm a little when a straight left arm will prevent that-unless your left arm is elasticated haha
@CogornoGolf5 жыл бұрын
The arms are moving down at you do it....thats how....ITs not just straight away...its straightening and going down in reality.

Hand and club move away due to tilted zarc and slight lateral shift left of pelvic swingcentre.

Great video and to get a wider arc it is logical. Can't wait to try your method.
@CogornoGolf5 жыл бұрын
Hope it hopes, Susan! Wider for the first 1/2 of the downswing is the goal! Can go more narrow from there forward!

In transition my shaft gets steeper, As a result my body early extends towards the ball to try to shallow it out. my hands flip at the bottom to try square the clubface up.... any tips on what to work on first?
