i was so so so lucky to be able to play with Lee in a pro am about 15yrs ago i guess..im in my late forties now and back then Lee had to be early sixties i guess..he was always my favorite player to see and to follow at tournaments if i went..to meet him in person was just spectacular..i was a scratch player for alot of years and was a bit cocky back then too and always played friends for sum money..after a few holes with Lee i said to one of our foursome are u guys gambling? he said hell yeah,Lee wont play unless theres sumthing on the line even if it was a soda,he said when u play for sumthing no matter what the whole game changes..hes right..i could hit the ball much farther then him given the age differences so i figured i could prob beat him a few holes just because of that and to say i beat Lee even for one hole would be great..well when i asked him if he wanted to gamble of course he said hell yeah..50$ a hole..he said you sure? i said yup..i won the first hole and he congratulated me and said ok your 1 up..i thought this is gonna be fun..it was for him anyway..handing him 800$ after the round he smiled at me and we laughed and i said you hustled me mr trevino,,he said no i didnt you just made your donation to play with me and your 3 pals too....he let me win our first hole to get me fired up then he just turned into a super human robot and just never ever missed a shot or a putt..these guys are not human,there robots..unless sumone is lucky enough to play with one of these greats you cant believe how amazing they really are..i have a bunch of great photos from that day i display proudly over my desk..

Saw Trevino at a Senior Tour event in Long Island about 1997. We were standing around the practice area and I said “Hey Lee you don’t have a 60° wedge” he turned to me and said no I just take my 56 and I open it up like this ! Got a few chuckles from the crowd. Followed him for the front 9, what a master with a club. He moved the golf ball all over the place, One of the best feel players ever nothing technical in his swing. Invaluable lessons right here with hand position. No wonder why with my driver some go left and some go left ! Damn he just cured a big problem with my tee shots !! Thanks !

I caught that instantly - he's right. That's like the #1 thing you learn from good teaching pros and from reading "Golf My Way" by Jack. It's also the #1 fundamental of setups when you go back to the fundamentals to overhaul your swing. He's right to ref the Golden Bear on this.

It amazes me to this day that Lee never finished better than 10th place at The Masters at Augusta. The one major he needed for the grand slam. There's guys that aren't prominent names that have finished 2nd and 3rd at Augusta just by a chance in a particular year, but Lee for some reason never did. That's golf for you.

Lee Trevino; a master and a legend. This poor pro has no clue the wisdom he's imparting on her. Better players than me would give their left eye to get a lesson with him. I followed him for 18 holes during a tournament in the 1980s right after he had back surgery. He hit one of his tee shots right next to us on the right side of the fairway and had about 120 yards to the green. He was yakking the whole time, and he said because of his back surgery, he was a little weak and had to use his 3-iron for what normally would be a wedge. He feathered that 3-iron like it was a wedge about 10 feet away. This guy had incredible talent, but never got the respect he deserved.

Everybody with any sense falls back on Jack. Players today use his grip (interlocking), his approach to the set up. They all do deep breaths and visualize before hitting, both of which Jack brought into golf. They use a short target, they waggle the club before hitting, and they map out the course the way Jack did; and he was the first to use all of these.

Lee was gifted with a very sharp mind. He did not have much education, but he has always had the ability to understand something and then pass on his knowledge so that someone else can understand it too. If he had not been such a great player himself, he would have put Peter Kostis, David Ledbetter, and Butch Harmon and all the other "teachers" to shame.

@jamiesloan7259
@jamiesloan7259 3 жыл бұрын
There are 2 ways to have hands forward at impact. With a strong grip, your hands will naturally stay ahead of the ball. You basically just use a lot of side bend, and turn through without rolling the club face over. However, if you prefer a weaker grip, you MUST come into impact with a flat, or even bowed left wrist. Either way... You're basically hooding the club, without closing the face(at impact). Never try to get forward shaft lean by leaning the handle towards the target. It's actually achieved by exiting low-left with the handle, with your hips slightly open to target. These things takes a lot of experimentation, and a lot of practice. Good luck!

Mid 80s Mr. Trevino osed to come to Santa Cruz during the week of the Bing Crosby in Carmel. A junior benefit event. Walked with h fo 18 side by side. Never heard the sound of strke before or since. Had perfect control of the ball. All sorts of bizzare and incredible shots. He had a wooden 6 wood that he loved and could do anything with. He figured out his own method and probably understands his own swing better than any pro in history. Other than maybe Mr H. There"s some genius in his method that I think is just now being understood. To this day the sound stays with me. And I've seen everyone hit it in person. Never saw Mr. H, but they say the same about his sound. It's a mystery why he didn't win the Masters for the grand slam. The nonsense notion that he cut the ball prevented it doesn't fly cause he can work it easy to the left. My hunch is he hated the place for a variety of reasons. Who knows. Bit one of the best golfers in history for certain.

@@slatt33 It was a great honor. Literally side by side with him 18 holes. First hole he's out about 60 yards. Says to me: "want to see something wierd?" Ok I say.. So he take a sandwedge and takes a divot the size of Rhode Island. The ball doesn't get higher than waste high. Hits in the back of rlthe green and spins back 20 ft to 4ft. Just for fun he did it. Beautiful driver of the ball. Fall off fades all day. Dead straight then at the Apex would fall slightly right. I don't think he missed a shot. And I mean like everything on the nut. It was something. I will say though, not a great putter. I don,'t think he liked putting cause he knew it was not masterable. Another HogAn similarity there! Putting is dumb when you get the physics of it. Damn hole to small to reward great striking. Glad you enjoyed the remembrance.

I’ve tried this since I watched this video. It’s making a positive improvement in ball striking and direction. Makes sense but I never heard anyone teach this. I had a top teacher instruct me to point the butt of the club at my belt buckle. No wonder I was hitting shots all over the map! No more!

lol..yeah your "top teacher" doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground...you always want a bit of a forward press, especially with your irons...basically if you set your club down flat with the face at your target the grip will be in the position to place your hands. It is more forward the shorter the club and slowly transitions to about your belt buckle with the driver.

It's so entertaining to watch Lee...but I'm not sure his genius is learnable. Remember that Trevino is almost as gifted with the gab as he is at golf---a very unusual double talent. If Jym Furyk was like Trevino off the course he'd be having everyone looping their swing around and turning hips 50 degrees at impact. Something just about no one else in the world can do.
