Me and mr barlow kick off over a rules breaking in our 4 hole golf match at bentham golf club! We are staying over at bentham golf club and decided to have a few fun golf matches... But this golf match is tarred with controversy and we need you to settle this argument in the comments!

You can play a shot out of a red-staked hazard. I guess the question is whether Mr. Barlow would get a free drop due to interference from a man-made object while in the hazard. I think rule #17.1.E would apply here? "If a player’s ball is in a penalty area, and is outside a no play zone but a no play zone (whether in an abnormal course condition or in a penalty area) interferes with his or her area of intended stance or area of intended swing, the player must either: Take penalty relief outside the penalty area under Rule 17.1d or 17.2, or; Take free relief by dropping the original ball or another ball in this relief area (if it exists) in the penalty area (see Rule 14.3)" Sorry to geek out on you there lol

You cannot play a ball if it is going hurt new trees. You do not get a drop out of the hazard. Ste should have had a free drop (lateral or backwards), but still in the hazard.

Barlow absolutely should have gotten a free drop. Regardless of being in the penalty areas his swing would have been impeded by the staked trees. The stakes are there to protect the trees. You can choose to play within the penalty area so you’ve basically had Barlow’s eyes out!

I have just seen this and am keen to find out who was right. I agree with Mr. B that you would not find staked trees in a hazard. I am wondering if Liam had him in with a bit of rules trickery.

You don’t get free relief from an immovable object, such as a tree with the ball in a red-staked penalty area. Your options are to play the ball as it lies or take relief from the penalty area for a one-stroke penalty. Even with a local tule on the trees you would take it out and drop.

Liam is correct on the rule. Ball was hit into the hazard, ball is considered LOST or OUT OF PLAY,.. 1. Player hits provisional, within scorecard length of original lie, one stroke lost, play on once announced 2. Player takes drop at nearest point of entry into hazard, based on flight and path, no more than 2 club lengths away from hazard, or neareast area of relief, no closer to the hole, loss of stroke, play continues at next stroke count until hole is finished. Balls recovered from hazard does NOT save loss of stroke if put back into play, but puttinto play and playing the WRONG BALL could be loss of hole in match play or a DQ in INDIVIDUAL competition. Even though you found the ball and recovered it from the hazard, its considered lost. It must be declared BACK IN PLAY to the rules official, then you can use it to take a drop, declaring your PROVISIONAL NO LONGER IN PLAY. At that point, you must go through taking the drop, recover the provisional and repair your ballmark. Then you may take your shot from the drop point. Mr Barlow shouldve just left it out of play and taken the provisional. LOVE THESE VIDEOS WITH MR BARLOW!!!! Love the way he chirps at Liam to "put him under pressure"!! 😂

Last round I played I scored an 11 on a 340 yard par 4 (7 handicapper as well)... Tee shot out of bounds, third short into a bush (unplayable), fifth shot out of bounds, seventh shot into the same bush (unplayable), nineth shot into the fairway, tenth shot short of the green, from where I chipped in for an easy eleven... LOL

Mr Barlow missed an occasion to breathd down Mr Harrison's neck. Once your ball is on the green, YOU DON'T GO LOOKING FOR TROUBLE" The ball in the hazard, unless clearly identified, could be anybody else's ball from another round. He would declare it not his ball and no one could prove any different. He then continues on the green with a put for bogey. This is called using the rules to your advantage !

May I take relief from a bridge, sprinkler control box or other immovable artificial object when my ball is in a penalty area? A.No. When your ball is in a penalty area, you do not get free relief from an immovable artificial object (see Rule 16.1a(2)). from USGA rules page

did you check the card for local rule, course i play has this: Protection of young trees identified by ______. If such a tree interferes with a player's stance or area of his intended swing, the ball must be lifted, without penalty, and dropped in accordance with the procedure prescribed in Rule 24-2b (Immovable Obstruction). If the ball lies in a water hazard, the player must lift and drop the ball in accordance with Rule 24-2b(i), except that the nearest point of relief must be in the water hazard and the ball must be dropped in the water hazard, or the player may proceed under Rule 26. The ball may be cleaned when lifted under this Local Rule"

One thing is certain, Mr Barlow does talk during Liam's shotmaking quite often. I would find this irritating, however witty Mr Barlow thinks he is being!!

Rule 17.3 No relief under other rules for ball in penalty area except for interference from a dangerous animal - could Liam be classed as a dangerous animal? Also check 18.3a if the player is aware that the only possible place the original ball could be lost is in a penalty area, a provisional ball is not allowed and a ball played from where the previous stroke was made becomes the ball in play. So Mr. Barlow was lying 4 on the green. When he abandoned that ball and played the drop from the penalty area he played from the wrong place. That means he should add two penalty shots to the score he made with the dropped ball (14.7a). So after dropping the ball he played his "4th". Plus two penalty strokes makes it his 6th plus 2 to hole the ball gives 8 strokes for that hole. But no change to the final result if there were no scorecards to sign with a wrong score - and thus disqualification.

Correct rule.. but I suspect the green keeper wouldn’t have been happy if MR Barlow had chosen to play it where it lay and destroyed the staked sapling. A local rule may have been in play !!!!

I agree. Can’t get a free drop in a hazard (penalty area) and taking the shot near the staked tree could incur a 2 stroke penalty. Hope they informed the pro or greenkeeper so a local rule could be put on the scorecard.

Someone educate me. I don’t see the rule outlined. I agree with the staked trees and they relief but still dropping in the hazard. But, he played a provisional. I thought that as long as he was in the hazard he already made his choice by dropping from where he played the previous shot. So he didn’t get a choice to drop it at the last entry point to the hazard. But he would have two putted and add a 6 anyway. But he didn’t follow the rules so another 2 stroke penalty?

I think If local rules state protection of young trees then it's everywhere on the course including hazards. Local rules outweigh all other rules. The free drop would be in the hazard and then the player can choose to play it or take a penalty drop.

The red sticks look like they indicate (rather than define) the penalty area, which is the ditch. His ball is not in the ditch: it's on the other side. I don't think that the red sticks in the distance denote the far edge of the same penalty area. Free relief for staked trees may not apply to those little saplings - they are not trees, they are planted to become a hedge. However they are an abnormal course condition outside the penalty area, from which free relief should be available. The nearest point of complete relief, not nearer the hole, is further back from where the ball is on the far side of the ditch.

Liam is definitely correct - there is no relief of any kind while in a hazard area. Only relief is to move it out of the hazard and take a stroke. Good to keep a rule book in the golf bag so it can be settled on course nest time. Still fun to watch.
