Thank you so much for posting this. It gave me the courage to replace the red gear on my daughter’s MK2 Scirocco. It turned out that not only war the red gear cracked, but the gray metal gear on the other side was slipping. I ended up pulling the rod out partway and pulled off the gray and 1st black number, cleaned the rod and put a spot of glue on the rod before I slipped the last gray gear back on. It works now and I’m so happy. Thank you again!

Thanks for the great video. If you don't mind me ask, do you know what is the function of the speed sensor you mentioned at 5:15. It's been bothering a lot since I don't have this sensor on my mk2. Thanks a lot.

It's for the digital display / Multi Function Display in the cluster. All GTIs should have the MFD which lets you see oil temp etc. and speed is one of the things on there, although I recall it's not terribly accurate as the sample rate is quite slow.

Can you access the screws to remove the cluster from the case by rotating the dial face and going through the rectangular slots ? Like most people in uncomfortable pulling needles off just in case i break them.
@FinalDecap6 ай бұрын
The needles are quite easy to break (I have broken them in the past) but if you're careful they aren't too bad. You could possibly reach and adjust the mile counter without removing them but I wouldn't be too sure on that. As with your other comment, I can possibly check in the next couple of days if needed.

How far do you need to get into the dials to replace the lcd?
@FinalDecap6 ай бұрын
It's been quite some time since I took a set apart but I recall you just need to remove all the screws from the back and each section will come out easily and safely enough. I might have some I can check in the next few days and get back to you if that's useful.

Hi Chap- good video. Do you know how many cogs there are on the red cog wheel as you can now buy these - they come with 17,19,21 variants. My car is a 1991 Mk2 Golf 16V with stock 160 clocks. Also the roller wheel there are different variants thick 3,2 mm; 4,5 mm; 6,4 mm .. My speedo works but the odometer and odometer reset is frozen so I guess my cogs have failed through age. Thanks

To be honest, I'm not sure. I can check the spares I have as they all fitted fine in the 160 clocks I had...but my stuff was CE1 and if yours is 1991 it'll be CE2. I suspect they are the same but I can't guarantee that they will be. I'll measure the spares I have and get back to you.

@@FinalDecap Thanks mate at least you can get the two cogs on the end its a shame yours is a CE1. Is it quicker to get the gauge cluster out a ce2 set up, Thanks This is the cog I have been told it will probably be from seller for one end. cog 21 www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ZAHNRAD-F-VW-GOLF-MK-1-I-VDO-TACHO-KOMBIINSTRUMENT-KILOMETERZ%C3%84HLER-REPARATUR/173267214137 Also the cog at the other end of the shaft will be either one of these variants There are 3 different thickness variations ( 3,2 mm; 4,5 mm; 6,4 mm) www.ebay.co.uk/itm/D2-2-WALZEN-ZAHNRAD-FUR-MECHANISCHE-VDO-TACHO-KILOMETERZAHLER-WALZENZAHNRAD/173738876341?_trksid=p2485497.m4902.l9144 Thanks

Did you consider the speedo-ratios between them ?

I dissembled my corrado speedometer to fix the ODO drive and when I assembled it back together, it measures the distance, everything works like new BUT I didn’t know about setting the speed, how can I fix it so I can properly show my speed?

And still works?
@FinalDecap6 жыл бұрын
Once rebuilt, yes. I fitted the drive from another known working unit and used the 160 clock's needle spring to ensure it reads correctly.

How you do calibrate the velocimeter?
@FinalDecap6 жыл бұрын
Do you mean the needle position? Around 14 mins I show where the needle needs to point when it's reattached. If you mean one of the components within the speedo itself, they shouldn't need calibrating but they can fail, in which case the easiest option is to replace them with parts from a donor unit.
