Thank you so much for that hint at 4:50! Saved me a lot of work. In my car the problem was that the two bolts securing the lock to the door were too tight: they're supposed to be tighten to 20 Nm, too tight may cause the dead-bolt function to jam. Which is exactly what happened. But with this trick I got the door open, corrected the torque of the bolts and now everything works. Thank you!

Would like to echo the sentiments of many others who have seen this video. Managed to change the door lock mechanism exactly as shown. Although happy with most routine engine/brake servicing would never have tried this without seeing your video which gave all the info you need to complete the job. Saved me a fortune! Please keep this video on line, I suspect many others will need this in the future. Many thanks William!!

I think Im more comforted by the fact that Im prob not the only golf owner who has frantically pressed the key fob and the internal locking buttons to try and get doors to open. Its a complete gamble as to whether the rear drivers side door or the front passenger door will open/lock!? Hats off to taking all that effort. My only concern would be getting it all back how it came out! Cheers from u.k

Hi, so I ordered and got the part in. Followed your instructions and the new locking mechanism is now in. As my door was in the stuck/ locked closed position it would not open. The two screws at the bottom acceded from inside when back driver side door was closed took me hours to unscrew. Than it too what must of been am hour to get the door to open, after many many many attempts at knocking the door. I was going to give up and pay VW £550+ (they said min 550 but they charge £170/hr what a rip offf, and they could not give me a fixed time and hence a fixed price) to doo it. After going away and coming back to it my lock kicked in and the door opened. After that followed your vid and it all works great. Thank you so much. You saved me a lot. In uk all cars must have yearly check up and the stuck door would fail the car and hence ban it from the roads. So very happy I got it fixed. Thank you so much.

Thanks William, much appreciated!!! Just fixed my lock. Quick fyi for Bora/Jetta (EU) owners: door lock is Spline M8, door handle is Torx 20, there are different lock modules for pre 2001-6 cars and later build cars, so make sure to order the correct one. Only issue for me was my electric window did not come up anymore, seemed stuck, fixed it by putting the carrier half way and than click in the window. Thanks again for this vid!!

Thank You for your time making this video! I have the exact same issue with my VW Golf 4 as you had. My back left door was deadlocked from 2014 (I didn't use it). I had no knowledge how to disassemble everything to get to the lock mechanism. There are more similar videos on KZbin but Your video is the best showing how to do everything right way. Recently my car's right back door lock started showing signs that it may deadlock aswell. So I left my car unlocked. Getting to repear it right now. All I have to do, is to find 5mm bolt that screws into middle grommet to take out the window. Thanks again!

Thank you for your video, So clearly shot and explained, it was like having a mate with me to guide me through the process...Twice as it happened... as resoldering the joint in the original lock meant the lock worked, but the rod & button didn't. Which seemed to be down to a tiny bit of damage to one of the gears in the lock, so replaced the lock for a second go and its all good now.

Thanks for that, very useful. I did find a bit of a shortcut however.. I found you don't need to remove the strip along the top of the door, or the upright strip. When you've separated the window glass from the holder you can just wedge the glass into it's place at top of the door (a couple of doorstops wedged between the glass & the door might be useful to keep it in there). Then, if you remove the bolt at the bottom of the upright strip, there's enough wriggle room to get the mechanism past the upright strip. Simples :-)

William, please, did you find out how it is possible that both locks break at the same time? I have the same problem. One day the first lock broke, the next day it stopped working the next. Hi Matej. Sorry, I really am not sure! It could be the control unit, but then all four doors might stop working? I had one fail, fixed it, then soon after another one failed. It could be yours just happen to fail at the same time. Sorry I can't be more help, the car is long since gone!

Great video, i have been looking rear door disassembly video. I think im gonna try and repair the solder joints inside that famously fail, pretty sure that's the problem as everything works other than the intermittent central looking problem.
@9Willbur98 жыл бұрын
Thanks Paul, appreciate the comment. That sounds like it could be the issue, I also read about people repairing the solder inside the mechanism but wasn't game enough to try that myself. With the hassle of disassembling the door I opted for a new mechanism so I (hopefully) don't have to do it again in a hurry. Good luck with your fix!
@johnrichardson5448 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it seems to have either been straightforward faulty door modules causing a range of locking issues, or bad solder joints or even faulty microswitches that tell the car whether the door is closed or not. MK4's mainly affected, but also believe other marks were affected too.

Nice work mate , i'm about to attempt this procedure on my 2002 mk4 , 1 deadlocked door right side and 1 faulty solder joint on left one , btw was your actuator motor still working on the deadlocked door , or there was no sound and banging on it brought the motor back to life with a little luck? There isn't any sound coming from mine so i might have to smash the lock to pieces if luck isn't on my side .
@9Willbur98 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, yeah such a pain these door locks and a very common problem I found! Poor design too if you ask me. On the deadlocked one I couldn't hear any actuation until I hit it. It was as if there was a loose connection inside the mechanism and banging it got it to work eventually. It did take a while though when hitting it. Good luck with yours!

what are those rubber things for ? the one at the lever that goes up and down when opening closing and the one at the lever that you pull to open the door. My vw has both of them small size like the one you have at the up/down lever. The rubber from my car is damaged at the up/down lever. Should i cange it? From what i saw the door lock module is water proof and the only purpose that i see of this rubbers is to protect the levers from touching the metal parts. What do you think?
@9Willbur98 жыл бұрын
They look to me to just be a grommet that helps guide the rods. I guess without them the rods could potentially rub against the metal. I am unsure if it will work without them Though I don't see why not. You should test it before assembling the door again! Unfortunately, I am not an expert! Hope that helps.
@3mariusx8 жыл бұрын
ty for fast reply. well its not entirely destroyed it just has a small "cut" so i guess it can stay like that ;) the base of it where it can rub on metal i dont think its breakeable due to normal use. also the up/down lever is hold by the door plastic so i dont think it can rub the door metal anyway. if i found out something diffeerent i will let you know too. ty again

@9Willbur96 жыл бұрын
Hi Sherry, thanks for the question. I never had to pull apart the drivers door so I am not too familiar with the lock there. (Unfortunately I am just a tinkerer and have long since sold the VW) However it seems there is definitely something broken if your key spins round and round in the lock. Perhaps someone else out there might have some answers? Sorry I can't be of more help!

Hey there, not too sure on the part number, but they are (as far as I know) the same across the entire MK4 Golf range. Here is a link to one on Ebay, is.gd/X12xKf If you scroll to the bottom it has a list of all compatible models and there are a stack of 2002 there so you should find yours. Hope that helps!

@9Willbur98 жыл бұрын
Hmmm... that's a tricky one as the inner panel has the window carrier etc attached to it, and getting the window out while its shut would be a no go I think... does the mechanism make any sounds at all when trying to unlock it? Hi Ricardo, no sorry! It was a while ago that I did this and I looked at countless forums and other you tube videos to get bits and pieces of information. Sorry I can't be of more help, but Google is your friend! :)

Hi my car is audi A4 2004 drive door doesn't open from inside and outside
@jcampbell1206 жыл бұрын
Amazing video. Thanks very much for your help. Also, for people who can't get their door to open, instead of banging through the hole with a screwdriver I applied an emergency power supply as per this link: uk-mkivs.net/topic/91344-opening-door-lock-actuator-from-inside-the-door-skin/ It worked first time! Again, thanks for the video, it was very clear.

nice! but i need the mechanism of the back door
@9Willbur97 жыл бұрын
EnkiXIII thanks. Yeah, fortunately I never had an issue with the rear hatch. I'm sure you can find it on eBay and hopefully there's a tutorial out there for it! Good luck

Thanks. for video, but next time would be graet to cut out things like screwing screws out of doors, so the video could be much shorter and more enjoying.

This is a stupid common problem....if i knew i wud never have bought this stupid car...lol! * Love it really :-)
@9Willbur98 жыл бұрын
Sure is... had some transmission issues as well, as have others I have spoken to. Some others have newer VWs that also have trans problems and burn through oil... its as if they have lost some quality control in recent years. That said it is a nice car to drive and is well built (aside from its faults...) I am however never buying euro again...

Thanks for the comment. It certainly is important. Around 23:15 I mention about reinserting the plastic pins. Hope the video was helpful!

its pain in the arse to replace that mechanism. Now i understand why the mechanic wants some good money to fix it :)
@9Willbur97 жыл бұрын
Indeed, it is rather time consuming! Still, not too difficult if you have the time and tools.

Good video but did not need to remove the glass or the guide.
@9Willbur97 жыл бұрын
Jose Vereda appreciate the comment mate, but yes, you do have to remove it. The glass is literally in front of the mechanism and the carrier is attached to the door skin. I suggest you take another look before attempting.

Well, if it comes to replace, then it's usefull. If it comes to fix it's useless.
