I started to do this about two years ago. It took me until this year to get it down. I went from a 12 handicap to shooting scratch golf. Those of you out there that have the OLD open to closed club face swing, TRY THIS! Of course, only if you want to play better golf that is. GREAT video, keep them coming...

Mike has picked the brains of the best players of golf. Including Jack. He also has the approach of keeping it natural, and not manipulating. Which is why golf is one of the most frustrating sports for people. Everyone out on the course thinks they know "the right way". You will NEVER... and I mean NEVER... learn how to golf from watching someone or learning from someone. You'll learn how to play golf, and play great golf, depending on the amount of smart effort you put into it. If you spend 3 days a week on it, 3 hours/day, good luck. It just won't happen. That's why most people on average don't get good. The real athletic folk can on that schedule, but not the average Joe. If anyone is reading this far... do not take advice from anyone in person. Watch videos of pros hitting during warmups. Then go out and apply it. Record yourself. If you can't do that, don't play golf.

At almost 70 and physically fit, I have for years gone toe up , toe up, and have done just ok. High 30s, low 40s. Admit, too many toe shots. I've tried Mikes method twice, and twice hit low short shots. Wiil add, I started bowing left wrist after one of Eric's videos to keep face closed/square on backswing. That definitely helped. Still, I like what Mike has here and maybe I have to give it more a chance.

This is the best video to explain face control of you are having issues. I just started playing this year and couldn’t get the club face square at impact. I tried the wrist rolling and I would get way too much inconsistency. Get the club face shut coming down as made a world of difference. Mike is an amazing online coach. Can't wait to try this out at the range. I've always struggled with face control, especially with the driver, leaving it wide open on the downswing and getting a massive push slice. After a few swings trying this out at home, I found that this is a completely different feel and that I was rolling the forearms in the backswing, and not returning them to neutral coming through. I think this will be a complete game changer going forward.

I’ve gone back and forth from the traditional “rolling” of the wrists and the way in this video and for me, rolling puts less stress on my wrists at impact than the other way. Yes, it requires more timing, in delivering the face closed at impact but I still prefer it.

Great video as always Eric. I have a question of when and how in the downswing do you ‘release’ that right hand. we are always told not to flip the club as this will decrease dynamic loft, so are there any drills which help with timing the release.

Great video! I too feel like I need to roll my forearms to close the face for a free flowing swing, but I also know it's extremely timing based for quality shots. Trying my darndest to be more like what's shown in the video. Curious, I never heard anyone say before the lead arm grip needs to match your joint alignment. What does that mean and look like? Always heard the lead arm grip needs to match your release pattern.

I really liked this video. One of the things I am working on right now vs. the roll that was taught. To try and get a more reliable ball consistent flight and swing. Quick question... When in the swing would the right hand hinge? At the beginning, the middle? I see many say hinge early, some say at parallel, and some say hinge late at the top. What is correct? Or does it just depend on the player and what feels best?
@CogornoGolf

Mike's method of release is easier to control the clubface, of course. For mediocre athletes like me, that's the way to go. For ANY new motion, partial swings are best to get started. Full speed is a poor way to learn a new motion. If the partial swing isn't working, make it smaller and slower. Once you can perform it there, you can grow the swings larger and increase speed gradually. If you sense a failure, go the other way, smaller and slower. This is for any motion change.
@31stormer

Doesn't the hand/wrist release like that promote scooping? Almost like trying to hit a flop shot? I am having this in my full swing and it's making the ball balloon. I'm not casting but releasing as talked about in this video. I do this naturally. How can I do this while keeping the ball flight lower? So the ball doesn't balloon.

Resonates - weaken the grip to mitigate a left miss that was actually caused by body stalling and flipping.

Ok. I’m a little confused. A few days ago ago I stumbled upon your superb video on building a swing station with buckets ‘n sticks. It emphasizes lead arm supination. The lights went on for me, other than a concern that my timing can change day to day. But now this video with Mike M seems to entirely negate such severe rotation. Love all of your videos, Eric… but is supination something to be discouraged now???

Lol completely understand where you're coming from Don! Can be confusing watching those two. The short answer I that both ways can work. They are different. neither is RIGHT or WRONG but different ways---check this one out may help clear it up: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oaewmp2MdstsfKs

What's the difference between a throw release and a flip? Is it just that a flip is a throw that happens too early?

Doesn't this arm and wrist motion discussed in this video conflict with what is required to execute Mike's L to L drill...it seems that the L to L drill requires alot of forearm and or wrist rotation???
@Ken-jf1cm
@Ken-jf1cm 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely not Albert. That's the point of the need for toe-down at last parallel...which should be the starting point in the LtoL. The forearms then needn't rotate at all, and the wrists just go from extension (knuckles to wrist on right hand) to (slight) flexion (I think I've got those terms right way round!)

Hi Eric I’m a keen subscriber to your channel and have enjoyed s lot of your content over the years. Recently I see you have been working with some KZbin instructors but I am now getting s bit confused as some of these methods are flip flopping. First you show and endorse the cantered stack and tilt ie Saguto and Jesse Frank as well as another instructor Steve something can’t remember his last name. Now you working with mike Malaska whom I find is really knowledgeable but very confusing at times implementing his ideas. He advocates arms starting the swing being a Jim Flick deciple , where the stack and tilt guys are saying the body is the engine. Golf is confusing as it is so aren’t you worried you are confusing your subscribers as well? Just my thoughts thanks Leon

Great lesson, however pitchers don't do extension-flexion when throwing a baseball. They absolutely use pronation. Wrong example of other sports.

Eric, why didn't you rebut Mr Malaska? You used to say that we never roll our forearms enough - you can't have it both ways! What about simple Physics ala AJ Boner (the club head is the bat). If flipping the right hand is correct then all clubs should be made like putters (more or less a rectangle from heel to toe), with the shaft going through the centre of gravity - which makes hitting the sweet spot 1000% easier. But that's not how the club head is DESIGNED. Please let Mr Malaska answer that. In any case, most of the pro's roll their forearms to some degree - even Mr Malaska himself, just watch it in slow motion.
