I traditionally don’t have a full back swing to the extent the club shaft does not end up parallel to the ground at the top of the back swing because I never learned to loosen up my trailing wrist but instead keep both wrists static through out the swing. I’m very happy with my game currently but I feel I haven’t untapped the distance that I am capable of. Cannot get my average drive past 230 yds (can hit it 275 on the rare occasion) and 5 iron average past 165-170. I want to incorporate this in order to hopefully generate more clubhead speed in the downswing while remaining consistent if possible. Do you think that this extra flick of the wrist will serve to generate more power? Thanks in advance for the tip!

This is my new warm up at the range before the round. 10 swings at that pace, then half swing, then full swing. I miss the sweetspot on full swing, I do another two of the drill and then smash it. Never knew how far a ball can go, from just hitting it in the right spot on the club - This drill works

Beginners have to be a bit careful here. I saw a very similar video a few years back which got my wrists in a very stiff (not hinged) position. This made my backswing flat, causing other problems, and took many lessons and time to fix. The concept in the video is, of course, right, but I'd like to point out where I went wrong. You'll see Adam hinges his wrists beautifully (90 degrees) by the time his left arm is parallel to the ground and maintains it right up to release. I focused too much on a flat right wrist during the take away preventing me from setting the club. I have to feel like I start setting the club as I move away or I don't get close to 90 degrees with arm parallel to ground. Please don't read this as criticism of the video, I really liked it, I just wanted to share my "learn golf from KZbin" nightmares!

Thank you, Adam. What a great tip! The funny thing is just for the past few days I felt that when I do my downswing, I should not only follow through with my right wrist but also guide it with a little power to push the ball till the end of swing. After watching your video, it seems I should not add more power with my right wrist, instead, I should hold it and respond with my core swing. Mind sharing with me your point?
@Scratchgolfacademy7 жыл бұрын
Shengli, We all 'feel' our swings differently, what counts is a good delivery of the club. The core initiates the downswing, which loads the right wrist. This gives the shaft some pop and speed at impact. I hope this helps a bit. Best, Adam

I took up golf in my latter years and it is only through your videos that I have come to understand the way the wrists move in the swing, and the looseness of the wrists that is required. I can now for the very first time actually feel the weight of the club head and I find it is just naturally returning to a more square position at impact without any extreme physical manipulation. I know many of my older golf mates that would benefit by watching your instruction and listening to you. Thank you as you have really helped me more than you could imagine. I think that from now on my golf game will be a lot less stressful.

So if your core movement stops to quickly in the downswing you get an early extension of the right wrist and possibly hit it fat?
@Scratchgolfacademy7 жыл бұрын
Yes, If you 'spring' the club (or straighten right wrist) too soon you will likely hit the ground before you get to the ball. Often the mind will lift up the arms or torso a little to offset this, sometimes causing thin. Hope this helps. Thanks, Adam

Hi Adam i have bowed left wrist at the top and my problem is to unload these angles at impact, i hold too much long in downswing and clubface lagging behind causes clubface too much open and 2 out of 10 shots heel strike. Please suggest what should i do.
@Scratchgolfacademy5 жыл бұрын
Demir, Hard to say without seeing you swing. I'd check to see that your lead hand (left hand for right handed player) is being gripped down in fingers enough. It will help you hinge so that the club stays in balance and wrist doesn't bow. This should (I hope) help. All the best, Adam

Why not to bend or cock the wrist during takeaway and keep it same in downswing? Please explain why not?
@Scratchgolfacademy6 жыл бұрын
Vimal, The reason is to create power/speed. You are quite right that it would be 'easier' in a way to keep them the same, and on a short pitch shot I'd suggest it. It's repeatable, and the shot doesn't require much speed. Hope this helps. Best, Adam

So is lag primarily generated by starting the downswing before you have finished the backswing like I've read before? I've tried to do that in the past and never had good results with it. Usually lead to a sloppy overly free wheeling clubhead that hit alot of hooks
@Scratchgolfacademy7 жыл бұрын
Well, what one experiences personally could be just about anything (as you've stated), but the fact of this motion sequence still holds true. I'd try it on a small scale first. If you get down to Naples sometime I'd love to work with you and see if we could help your progress. All the best, Adam
@movieguy9927 жыл бұрын
I wish I could . Lag is a total mystery to me and my iron game has always been my Achilles heel because I cast and scoop. Can't stop no matter what
@whetedge7 жыл бұрын
I know this sounds counter intuitive, but one of the best ways to learn lag is to try and swing without it. Trying to get lag has a good chance of messing you up because you try to control with the hands. You end up with your hand/arm muscles keyed in the opposite direction of the hit, or tight and confused. Just think about a smooth flowing swing (short and slow at first), _feeling_ the club staying straight out from the hands as at address, with a relatively light grip pressure. Feel the width of the arc. Feel as though you are resisting hinge with your trail hand. As you get comfortable with it, offer a little less resistance to hinge. You'll get lag in no time. Lag is one of those fad teachings in golf. Based on your comments, it's the last thing you should be thinking about. Lag is a result of a good pivot and lower body brace. It is the natural result of overcoming the upper momentum of the club on the back swing in a timely manner. It's one of those things we can observe, but not something you do with your hands. It is created elsewhere in the swing. Learn to _swing_ the club. The swinging club will produce lag, and release it at the right time. I don't know if Adam would agree with me. Just trying to be helpful, as I hear your frustration. Cheers.
@movieguy9927 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the input. I feel like I get whats happening with lag but I don't know how to put it into my swing. The pros look to me like they are simply rotating through the downswing and forgetting about doing anything with their hands. The club is simply drug into the ball by the rotation of your body and you save that last second release for at the ball. It seems it occurs naturally if you just focus on turning through. However I can't seem to master it. I had a pro tell me it was because my right hand takes over and throws the club down without me realizing it. I've tried to hit shots with no grip pressure in my right hand but that doesn't help either. Casting is often described as throwing the club outward and coming over the top which is a slice motion. But I hit a draw so I'm not coming over the top. It's frustrating because I saw a pro in another video explain how devastating losing lag is. He hit one 8 iron while casting and it only went 139. Then he hit another with lag and it went 170.
@whetedge7 жыл бұрын
Casting is not necessarily the same as early release, so it doesn't matter if your path is from the inside or from outside the target line. Early release is caused elsewhere in your swing. Trying to fix it with the hands usually just makes it worse. The first place I'd look is your trail leg brace. If you have a swing sample posted somewhere, link it please.

Adam, I would like to say, NOBODY and I mean NOBODY teaches this at all. I have seen a lot of teachings and NOBODY teaches this in my 50 years of golfing and trying to learn this game. I now can LAG with the club following my core turn like it should and I DON'T try to feel this at all, which makes it feel effertless just like it looks. You really have to let loose of the club and not strangle it, like I used to do. You really think this is going to really hit the ball far, but it is just the opposite. Now I am hitting it farther and it's feeling effertless. It feels GREAT. Thank you again Adam, you are the greatest teacher ever.

@mesillahills4 жыл бұрын
in all fairness, while I may have been critical of what "Scratch Golf Academy" has said in other videos, I happen to agree with this one. Few people realize the importance of the body as the dominant factor in a golf swing. One thing often not talked about is that it is super critical that half way back, the hands are centered to the chest and toe points straight up in the air. You should be able to lower the club, step around, and be right back to the exact same address position. This indicates that you have a very solid golf swing where nothing was manipulated out of place. While the touring pro golf swing is difficult to learn, it pales in comparison to a touring pro putting stroke. Now that one took me hundreds of hours under a 7 foot string to FINALLY figure out. Very few people know what a touring pro putting stroke actually is. Frankly, I don't think most people are smart enough to figure it out. The required tilted shaft on a putter screws up everything. It is not a croquet stick. And that's why touring pros, are touring pros. They did find things out In that arena. My hero's there are Tiger, Ben, Stan, Dave, and Michael Breed. They actually know how to putt. So do I. And the people at the Putting Arc have it figured out too. Further don't forget that the big flat topped Super Stroke grip typed is used by everyone for some reason. And that fits into the big picture of tour level putting as well. No tour player misses much of anything under 10 feet anymore. It is not God given talent. It is because of scientific facts that these people all know these days. Michael Breed can actually tell you how to double your chances of making a short putt once you know how to putt. And it works. You can probably thank Nicklaus for that one, but he kept it too himself. Remember this as a hint. Famed putting instructor Stan Utley has said, "I have no problem with a guy who hooks his putts into the hole". Think "bread and butter" and the distance of the blade off the ground dramatically affects the alignment of the blade to the target. Lift is not about good role. It's about ALWAYS closing the club face down.
