@apaulmcdonough2170

The Difference here is the specified "Attached Divot" . A completely unattached Divot is a Loose Impediment and can be removed as long as the Ball doesn't Move.

13 of 20. Great quiz. I really enjoy the rules series you do. It's a tremendous help (although it appears I may need to pay closer attention to them when watched.) I recently played in a tournament and was paired with a person who had recently completed a USGA rules course. He was an incredibly invaluable resource, as he was able to offer direction on options in a variety of situations. It made me much more interested in having a more comprehensive understanding of the rules.

Great Question. For "Formal Competition", I imagine those GC Quad Dots do make the Club non-conforming, because of the possibility of a Dot between Ball and Face, with an off center strike.

Great video, i scores 16/20. Regarding Q19 - impact tape/sticker on the club face resulting in the club being deemed a non confirming club due to an external attachment I was wondering if that then also effect things such as lead tape which players frequently use and also lots of people put a band of durable tape around their shafts to prevent bag rub on the shaft, can anyone enlighten me as to whether this constitutes the same infringement of the rules or not..?

1 got 6 wrong.. great quiz. I blew the one will the embedded ball :(. Has the rule involving the moving of the flagstick while someone is putting changed? At one time I'm sure it was a two stroke penalty.
@apaulmcdonough2170
@apaulmcdonough2170 3 жыл бұрын
Since 2019, a Flagstick may be left in the Hole during Putting. A Flagstick lying on the Green is considered a Moveable Obstruction, and may be lifted, or moved out of the way of a Rolling Ball. *I believe* IF a putted Ball (that was originally on the Green) strikes a removed Flagstick, the Original Putt is Replayed with NO Penalty.

I missed 2. I'm kind of proud of that. In 1997 I scored 100% on the PGA of America's Rules Test. But the rules of golf are fluid. Ever evolving into being more and more thorough and complete. The PGA Head Professional I was working under at the time was Jeff Taylor. Something he told me to have in the forefront of my mind when determining the rules of golf. "The Rules of Golf were never intended to harm the player, rather their purpose is to protect the field. " Must have worked, I killed it !! Lol...

I didn't keep track, but this quiz did answer some questions I've always had - one was the one where the ball came to rest against the flagstick and the other was about practicing putting and chipping after finishing a hole - something I've always done (when the next tee was full) but always worried that someone would yell at me. Now I can say, "read rule 5.5b." Rule 5.5b DOES, however, have the appended admonition, "But such practice strokes must not be made from a bunker and must not unreasonably delay play (see Rule 5.6a)" - which makes sense. I only ever do it if there's no one closely following. Good info, thanks.

If your ball is embedded in the face of the bunker, you won't necessarily be entitled to free relief as the relief area must be directly behind where the ball lies and only in the general area. There are many times where the potential relief area is only in the bunker and the rules don't allow for you to take free relief there.

Achieved 20/20. My comment would be that you should consider adding more detail to your commentary like the size and location of the Relief Area. I see too many players interpreting Free Relief and the spot for their Reference Point a little too liberally. For example, in your sixth question you cite getting Free Relief from an Immoveable Obstruction based on the fact that the sign interferes with his stroke. I see too many players interpreting the Reference Point for their stance as usually being either left or right of the Immoveable Obstruction and hence perhaps a couple of feet away from where their ball was whereas the Nearest Point of Relief could be 2 inches Back-on-Line. Once you have identified your Nearest Point of Relief, mark it and then you have a one club-length, no closer to the pin Relief Area.

I thought that you could not use a damaged club during a round if you caused the damage. I thought that the person who asked for advice got the penalty. I thought that you could mark a ball with a leaf or twig that was on the green if you did not have a ball marker available. Thanks for the review.

My score was 18 out of 20 and one of those was just the number of penalty strokes I said one and it was two for touching the sand in the backswing....wonder how many people do that in a round and it goes without penalty never mind one???? Hello Tony - in that Rule, 'ball-marker' is italicised which means you will find it in Definitions at the back of the Rule book, and it is here you will find the 'artificial' reference... "An artificial object when used to mark the spot of your ball to be lifted, such as a tee, a coin, an object made to be a ball-marker or another small piece of equipment."

19, just got the loose impediment used to mark ball on green wrong. May have been worth noting that the quiz is based on the extant rules as implemented 1 Jan 2019. Also could be useful to say where a rule was changed in 2019 for some people who have not yet bothered to acquaint themselves with the latest version, e.g. grounding club in penalty areas, damaged clubs, hitting sand in bunker in anger. Also worth noting that practising chipping and putting between holes is only permissible if it does not unreasonably delay play.

Little late but since it is a man-made object and interferes with the line to the hole he is allowed free relief no closer to the hole and i think 2 club lengths with the club that you would reasonably use next to get closer to the hole. I.e. you couldn't use a driver if you are 100 yds out.

19/20 I didn’t know that you could not restore the bunker lie after a player falls. Question, how can you tell if any part of the ball is below the hole when leaning up against the flag stick? I mean what if we decide that no part of the ball is not below the level of the hole, how would you mark it? Now that we’re allowed to leave the flagstick in the hole, I’ve always considered the ball holed even when it just touches the flagstick, knowing that if the flagstick is moved the ball would fall in the hole.

16 out of 20. I should have got Question 11 right, I presume the nearest reference point for relief would be behind the bunker? However, not sure about Question 16 with regard to the ball marker. I have recently bought the R & A Rule book and cannot find any reference to the fact that ball markers must be artificial. Could someone enlighten me? I also thought it would make sense to restore the stance in a bunker (Q.20) since it was accidently disturbed. Similar to replacing a ball on the green if it is accidentally moved. Good quiz and an enjoyable way to brush up on the rules.

Only 11/20. Funny I was a 1ST Team All-American in college but medicine has kept me from playing much at all for the past 30 years. Retired in march...did not want to keep wearing all the Covid-19 protection equipment etc. Hopefully retirement improves my golf game. I last played when the pin had to be out of the hole or tended.

Q11 is a stinker, at what point is the general hazard no longer a hazard? At Out course we have a sharp edge to the bunker and then about an 8” vertical (soil) face, balls have been know to plug in that bit of soil, so is that in the bunker, the face of the bunker or general area.

17/20, so not too bad. I have a question. In question 20, if, when he fell into the bunker he had a) touched his ball or b) improved his stance, what would the penalty have been?
