Golf shaft flex tested with slow driver golf swing. What golf shaft flex will work for your golf swing with the driver swinging at a slower speed. Shaft flex and matching it to the speed of your golf swing has been chatted about for years and is stuff of golf legend and myth. Watch as the guys hit drives using different golf shafts swinging the driver at a slower speed to show what difference they can really make to your golf tee shots. Let us know in the comments what shaft your play from a regular flex to a stiff of even x stiff and let us know why and how you picked the golf shaft you have in your driver. Also on the comments below let us know what driver club head speed you have and if you have found shaft has helped you control your golf swing.

Great video. Making it simple to understand, like it 👍 I have a driver club head speed of 93mph, I recently changed driver and shaft from a 59g UST Helium stiff to a 60g Tensei Orange Stiff. Changed because the feel with Tensei was so much better for me, it feels more flexible and not as boardy as the UST. Same weight and flex, but feel completely different, therefore more friendly and easier to swing for me

YES PLEASE!!! Mark hitting left handed shots is a thing of beauty... Ambidextrous stuff is always fun!!! Strike is king again!!! All this talk about feeling shafts... it's almost embarrassing to a point. LOL!!! I'm with you guys on the feel part... I go with what I like to feel... because I'd like to feel good when I actually strike the golf ball!!!

Got fitted. Have Sterling Irons 5-SW, shafts are Wishon S2S white (73g, A flex); Wishon 7 wood and Driver, shafts are Wishon S2S white (63g, A flex). Tried lighter shafts but got better dispersion with a little heavier. I'm 67 years old. Swing speed 65mph irons, 75 mph woods. Only play 11 clubs; not enough swing speed for 3W, 5W, or 4I.

Love the idea of this test. Gotta have a course vlog as a lefty now though, maybe a Christmas special? I've had a few drivers over the years from Ping Anser (stiff) to Nike Covert 2.0 (Regular) then TM R5 draw bias (Regular) for £30 from a mate, love it. But have to admit I wanted to experiment a bit so purchased a TM R11s Driver (Stiff) and 2 TM R11s 4 woods (Regular and Senior A flex) from ebay for around £150 total. After testing the standard longer driver shaft it went in the bin and the 4 wood senior A flex shaft is in the driver. Best feeling driver I've ever had, to me at least. I'm around 5'9" and the shorter shaft gives so much more confidence, distance is still there, dispersion is good and I don't feel I'll push the drive low right as I can often feel with a stiff shaft.

love these videos and think more fitters need to watch these - went for 4 hybrid fitting recently and went in - want this to carry 180 as 3 hybrid carries 190-200 - i hit 3 hybrid to get some numbers etc to show him - and he just said why were you previously fitted with regular shaft in 3 hybrid you could hit it further with stiff - and was annoyed cause dont need it go any further - want it to carry 190-200 and feels nice and had crap fitting for 4 hybrid as result

Love the left hand swing Mark. Just got my custom fit driver (M6 Twistyfave brah 😜). Tested the TS2, Epic Flash, G410 and the M6 with varying shafts. Swing speed around what you tested in your vid (92mph avg). Ended going for a Tensei Blue stiff 64g shaft. Why? Because it felt better to me. All of the shafts and club heads I tested came out roughly the same (dispersion was a bit better with my current set up but I can still send it way right whwn I get my angles wrong, which happens a lot.) When I button it though it goes a long way and will go further as I improve on my swing and swing speed.

What'd I really like to see is not just swing speed but transition speed. My main issue is that I cut short the backswing sometimes, violently turn into the downswing and pull my shots. I went with 130G xstiff irons and 70G stiff driver to deal with the pull so I don't hook it as well. It seems to have helped where even if I pull it, it's just a straight pull and still in play. I also switched my irons to no offset irons ( not sure if that helps with hooks or not but sometimes confidence matters). We focus on swing speed so much that I'm not sure we focus on lag vs release and transition when it comes to shaft weights and stiffness. I also felt that the shafts help distance control as well. Thank you.

Mark, fantastic video - thank you. Can you pls do a video on old steel iron shafts (circa 2005) v. a current (2019) graphite or other type of iron shaft? I would be curious to see whether the results would show a difference purely related to age/deterioriation factors.

I have a Fujikura Tour Spec stiff 74 shaft and I chose it 100% because I like the way it feels and I like the color of it. I have hit the longest drives in my life using an X stiff diamana ‘ahina that I think was 75g on a 2016 M2 head. But I also hit about the same length with a TS2 that had an evenflow white 60g stiff. So I am convinced that I adjust to whatever I feel at the time. I am a 6 handicap and I usually swing it around 105mph.

Fitted for Tensei White 60 x. Didn’t know what it was and didn’t care either during the fitting. Same driver in da bag three years later bruh.PS my left handed game is full of slices, pulls. Short game shots are funny to try lefty, I’ll remain on the other side of the ball. Saw Vijay pump out some lefty driver swings twenty years ago, incredible bomb balls on the tour range and was so impressed.

Good to see these figures MC. I use a regular 45g even flow. I swing on average at around 105mph. I had a Callaway fitting and the rep fitted me in an X stiff. I hit the ball better and further with my wippy regular. The rep from Callaway couldn't believe I was hitting it so well with a reg. In conclusion I fully believe use the shaft that you like.

I bought a Ping G400 Max recently, I swing at about 90-95mph.. I went with Tour 75 stiff having tried a few at Farnborough and for me it felt the nicest, didn't feel heavy, didn't feel light or too flexible.. I couldn't say the results with the other shafts varied much, I varied more than the effect I think they had on the strike...

Picking up on the comment about fatigue, I'd like to see a test to discover where that point is for you Mark. How many shots in a 'typical' practice scenario (smashing balls at the range) can someone play before the law of diminishing returns (or even negative returns) kicks in? Are we doing more harm to our swings than good by bashing buckets and buckets of balls? Would we be better hitting 30 balls at 100% capability in a focused session instead?

I just changed my standard ping g400 driver shaft to a tensei blue stiff.... because it feels nice and it looks sweet all in black. And it only cost $40 on eBay 🤷🏼‍♂️ And how much difference did it make to my arccos average?! Mark, dare I say, freak of nature. Recently got fit in to an M5 (sorry) with an XS 70 gram shaft (previously played S 65 gram) Gave me my best numbers, but the big thing it did for me was to make me swing slower (timing) but it feels like a harder hit. Sounds funny but that's how it feels for me. Must say you looked like you were happy swinging the lighter one, it looked more natural were as it looked like you were having to control the heavy one. You now have to do a course vlog left handed.

I recently bought a Cobra F8 with an Aldila 2knv Blue 60g Stiff, replacing my 2011 TM Burner Superfast with a 48g Regular. I still slice the ball, but i like the feel of the heavier shaft. I feel regardless of shaft, a path that's out to in and a face that is open will have the same result with either shaft. The TM felt too light, always has. Do you believe that a shaft that is too stiff will go to the right more? Because i haven't noticed a difference, a slice is still a slice and strike matters.

Still interested in how much it helps people like my Grandad, 85, who plays 4 times a week on a 9 hole par 3 course. Uses his Driver on most holes because it goes anywhere from sub 100 to low 100's. His back swing and follow through are extremely restricted due to his age. Hands get to a max of like "3 oclock", so level, on the back swing, with wrist hinge making the club head get to about head height. I can only assume that his senior flex graphite shafts in his irons and drivers are useful for someone so extreme. Also steel shafts are to heavy for him so that plays a part, too.

Agreed on final comments if all you've got is what you've got get out there and play there's more to this game than what bats your swinging. However you picked a shaft if there was no difference and it didn't make a difference then how could you have a preference? Also a separate question and really not the point of this vid however, feel aside as that can't be quantified and can be gotten used to, if all shafts and heads are within small percentages of each other why do you advocate getting fitted at all rather than just buying the first set you find on the shelf? Fyi I'm all for pro fitting both heads and shafts however I am in the shafts and heads do make a difference camp.

Harder to swing left handed with irons vs driver?
@wallstreetoneil
@wallstreetoneil 5 жыл бұрын
If you grew up in Canada, and were slightly younger, you would 100% be a left handed golfer. You would have your more coordinated powerful hand lower down on the club, delivering faster more powerful blows on the ball and you would now be known as Mr. 282. I have a hockey foursome where I'm the only right handed golfer - I have to look away when they swing or I can get the shanks.
@henrygrand695
@henrygrand695 5 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't he still be a right handed player? Don't you guys just play the same way as you do in Hockey? I do, I'm right handed and play as a leftie, like all sane people do :) Playing right, opposite of how I play hockey is borderline impossible.
@wallstreetoneil
@wallstreetoneil 5 жыл бұрын
@@henrygrand695 It is more common for Right Handers in hockey to have far bigger shots because the power is generated with the low hand on the stick. The opposite also seems to be true; and that is, having your right hand on the top of the stick (shooting left), gives you more control over your stick while stick handling - and that leads to the skilled handlers of the puck being lefties (obviously this is a generalization but having played top level hockey and raised and coached 3 kids playing hockey, one at a very elite level, I feel comfortable with this generalization.) The comment about Mark being a Lefty if he grew up in Canada is more true than anywhere in the world as the number of left handed golfers in Canada, far, far, far surpasses anywhere else in the world as a percentage. Consider Ben Hogan's quote of wishing he had 3 Right Hands coming into impact. Why did he say this? He said it because it is a key source of co-ordinated power at impact. I have spent many many years trying to help hockey playing lefties understand why their golf swing mostly sucks - and that is because they really don't have the same mental understanding and control over where their left hand is coming into impact. The way I show them how useless they really are at this is I have them make left hand only swings with their left hand on the proper place on the grip - they basically are nearly useless at this in comparison to right handed players who play right. Once I show them this, they then have an epiphany that they have no idea what is controlling the club face - it is shocking to them. If you ask right handed players to do the same, who are actually right handed, you will see that they are way better at almost instantly being able to hit the ball a long way with a slight draw swinging only with their right hand. For all my hockey lefty shooting friends who want to get better at golf, what they have to do is practicing swinging left handed only for a few weeks to program the part of the brain that controls coordinated power delivery of the left hand - if they do this, they will see remarkable improvement - it is really amazing. I would bet a lot of money, that Mark could in a very short period of time learn to hit the ball as far left handed as he does right - maybe even furthur - the short game is a completely different matter.

In my experience, I don't know at what swing speed I hit the driver, what I know is that I am 1.90 meters tall, and with a 67 g stiff shaft I have always managed to hit straighter and longer. I think I have a slow swing and a very moderate tempo. I prefer stiff shafts of 60 g or more, to avoid dispersion.

I prefer miyazaki shafts, they make it simple enough for golfers to switch shaft flexes due to their international flex codes. Gaming a Srixon 545 right now with a miyazaki jdl 5s flex code 5543. I wish all shaft companies would use these codes. Simple 1-9, 1 soft-9 stiff. 1st# is butt stiffness, then mid butt, mid tip then tip stiffness with the shaft divided in to 4 equal lengths

Can you and dan do a lefty course vlog just for the lolz

It's interesting as when you hit left handed, you don't lead with your legs as you do right handed. It looks like you're leading with your upper body / arms, which is what most amateurs do. :)

Here's the interesting part was struggling with strike head felt light std weight on back of club is 16g added an 8 g weight put them at the ends to increase MOI and my strike and timing increased big time getting some plus 190 carries and 210 plus with roll launch is around 15-17 spin is good thanks for the old guy vid appreciated Cheers from NorCal

You've got a decent left handed swing. It doesn't look awkward.

Did you reverse years of damage to your back by swinging lefty?

Dude. If you really want to help us meer mortals, you should work out how to improve your left-handed swing. How can you get that 185yd carry up to 270yds? Work that out and you'll really have some insight to share.

It seems there was a slightly better strike pattern with one shaft vs. the other. And that's what I've seen from most fittings. Strike is King, but strike location can be influenced by the shaft to some degree. So even though a shaft might be be marketed as high launch and low spin, if it influences you to hit it low on the club face, it's going to launch low and spin high.

After thinking about this over night (and yes beer was involved!) I have come to the conclusion that it makes no difference what shaft you give Mark because within a couple of shots he is sufficiently skilled (even left handed) to make the micro-adjustments in how he loads and unloads a shaft to ensure that his swing and the shaft have nigh on perfect synchronisation to ensure that result in terms of ball flight, spin, distance is the same. Most players are not that skilled, in some cases it might take them 10-20 shots to do what Mark does in a couple, in some cases they can never make those adjustments. So unlike Mark I think shafts can make a difference for some players - but whether that difference is the one the shaft marketing states is the difference is highly questionable. I also think it is highly doubtful that a shaft change will result in ANY golfer gaining 20 yards of distance - no matter what the marketing BS says For me as a fairly average amateur, a shaft change (in my case from 65g regular shaft in M1 irons to 80g regular shaft in i210s) did make a noticeable difference, but not to the numbers, I definitely swing more smoothly and more controlled (probably also a slightly shorter backswing) with the heavier shaft. I have no idea why, but I do like the change

So does this prove that golf is, if not all, then mostly about technique! when you look at all the figures Right handed compared to Left handed. Muppets par 5 left handed challenge?

Stealing the left handed idea from SAS golf 🤔 I play the aldila rogue m.a.x 70g Xflex as it felt the most stable through out the swing but could quite easily play regular shafts but I would struggle at first with timing
