This seems to me to be such an important video for anyone struggling with their irons, ball striking/compression in general. I have struggled with irons consistency for the last few months and I will try this to get me back to hitting solid shots with the short swing first. So, can I assume that once I've mastered these shorter backswing/follow-through shots, then all I add is a longer backswing? Sounds simple if it is and for me a great way to more consistency.

Yes! Start short and slow and build you way up. Only go as long and fast as you can perform the movements correctly/hit the checkpoints👍 Thank you for watching!

The elbow forward, the bowing of the left wrist and the closed face to the shaft are all downswing moves? I've done the left wrist bowing in the backswing before and it shortened my backswing by a lot.

As someone who has spent years of drills I can say that this one was a light bulb moment as well. To add to what harry said, I felt that when I was doing this that it was a completely different feel of how I have been hitting the ball all these years. Different in every part of this abbreviated swing through impact. I don’t really know how to else to describe it. At the range taking practice swings before actually hitting the balls I thought “there’s no way a good compression/contact and flight can come from this”. It was very strange to get used to but I have never felt happier or more eager to play after this. Did anyone else feel the same?

Is this technique intended to hit a full iron shot while playing golf, or is it more for training. It seems without a wrist release that the distance of the shot would be limited.....

How does one not hit it let/hook with this? And is driver any different?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf Жыл бұрын
Hey Matt! 1. You don't hook it by making sure the body motions are correct (turning/side bend) to get the handle forward......so the face points right at impact to start it right and then it can curve gently back 2. DRIVER a different ball game...

Butt of the club is ahead of the sweet spot? Can you explain that? Because that seems to be a key quality check. What specifically is the sweet spot?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf Жыл бұрын
Hey Chris! You can think of the sweet spot as the center of the club face. Check out the part in the video at 4:40 where we explain it more in detail👊 Hope this helps and thank you for watching!!

@@CogornoGolf Ahh, thanks! I went out and did this, had a good round. Of course it was a major change so there were some hiccups, but the hanger drill and 'the butt ahead of the sweet spot' are 2 things that I can check and accomplish. Ball flew lower, farther and straight as an arrow. I struggled on the range, so I did about 10 1/3 swings and that helped, then, I increased the speed. First time in my my life I've taken a divot ahead of the ball. THANKS!

@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf Жыл бұрын
Hey Mark 1. Make sure you are not hitting on bottom of face 2. Make sure ball position is not too far back 3. If 1+2 are OK then shallow angle of attack (I would need to see your swing on video to say why its happening/how) like more pick the ball off the ground than divot....if you take deep divot look here. If not those 3 then less shaft lean (throw sooner)

Great video. Video suggestion however. Question for me is how to, once you have realised the benefits of this stuff and over done it, how do you then dial it back so your longer clubs go higher than eye level? I've been really struggling with this over a year and cannot find any information on how to sort it. Good distance with short clubs now but cannot hold greens and long clubs way too low. A lot of fixes can easily be overdone resulting in beginner-level golf again, adding loft, opening the face. Would be amazing to see a holistic discussion on this type of problem. I can't be the only one.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf Жыл бұрын
Thanks Christian! I hear ya....obviously as the clubs get longer some things change. If you have enough speed.....you can still get quite a bit of shaft lean and be OK (think DJ) If you have less speed you can't have as much shaft lean as the clubs get longer (throw sooner) also you have to make sure you have the body motions correct as the clubs get longer to hit higher (think head more back) (more extension and side bend) So for longer clubs 1. Throw sooner 2. Head more back Would be the 101 version

My instructor taught me this drill and helped me tremendously but I’m closing my hands too much at impact sending the ball left (righty golfer). Any fixes for this? Im finding that it happens usually when I don’t clear my hips.

Don’t know if you two are familiar with him, but I learned about the club face part of this from Brian Manzella around 20 years ago. He called it”twistaway.” The easiest way for me, and perhaps some of your viewers to remember this, is to think of having the club face pointing somewhat towards the ground in the takeaway and.visible to a down the camera at the top. I find this easier to do than having to think about where the club face is relative to the shaft. Really appreciated the part about keeping the right arm more bent. Any thoughts on an externally focused way to achieve this (club focused)? Thank you.

Back to the active/passive release videos. I would guess that you are not advocating this (in general) to senior golfers. Your senior swing video from a few years ago promotes a more active release pattern for those of us challenged in making the hard body turn through the ball (passive type release). Seems as though Dunigan is OK with the more active release (old style)? Been struggling with this idea (on & off) for what seems an eternity. Short irons I’m good with the passive release. Longer irons, wood, driver seem to need an active nudge with the more active release… Thanks for all your work on the topic.
