Hogan used the compound pivot of the hips : like a wreaking ball!!! By utilising the hips not only as an axil, but also as a lever and then taking it to the extreme, by deepening and loading the right hip and delaying its release up and to impact. This delay of the power acumulatotors allowed his arms to gravity drop without any horizontal forces interfering, when one spins out too quickly 🤩

Regarding the transition if you can get your legs out from under you at the top, you will swing from the inside and really you dont have to consciously think about flattening the shaft or delaying the wrists, all this occurs naturally if you can transfer and clear your lower half effectively! It's the hardest move to make and why most people come over the top and slice. Mr Hogan did it better than most.

everything Hogan did was crucial as one package but as far as I am concerned the three most important things that I keep in mind that Hogan did are: (1). (p. 34, paperback edition, "Power Golf") keeping the left upper arm and elbow off the body at address and in front of the right arm and elbow. I also make a very conscious effort to make sure that my left arm is very relaxed so that there is absolutely no tension in it on my takeaway. (2.) making sure to keep my arms in front of my torso during the entire swing. Hogan never mentions this directly in his books but if you watch all the slow motion videos of Hogan swinging from behind and the down the line videos from behind you can see that his right elbow is always in front of his torso which means that both his arms are in front of his torso. obviously, it goes without saying that no one would ever be able to get their left arm behind their torso (right side players, anyway) but when I am thinking about it I think in terms of both my arms not just my right elbow. (3.) (p. 53, top of page in italics, "Afternoons With Mr. Hogan") for me, this is the most significant "secret" that Hogan had ... keeping the right knee bent inward toward the center of the body from the address position throughout the entire swing. by doing this a player creates a buttress on which to brace his swing. a rubber band, for the sake of stretching it, is nothing without being fixed at a point in which to stretch it. this is the purpose of the right knee. with the right knee braced and bent inward during the entire swing the rotating force of the torso has something to work against during the swing. the centripetal force of the golf swing needs something to be anchored against. a braced right leg is that thing. (def: centripetal: a force that acts on a body moving in a circular path and is directed toward the center around which the body is moving.) simply try swinging the Hogan way with bracing the right knee and see what happens. then try swinging the Hogan way without bracing the right knee in order to see the difference. night and day. good luck!
@tuncan3015 Жыл бұрын
Very insightful sir with the braced and bent inward right knee. I also think part of the "Secret" is Hogan keeps intact and pressured the arms triangle from right hip high thru impact to left hip high. I will work on the right knee secret you discuss.. . many thanks ! 🙂

There is a Big Hogan Secret that he mentions in his book (pg 30/31) but Doesnt attach as much importance to it as is due! That is moving in such a way on the backswing and through the ball that you maintain pressure on the grip with the knuckle and base of the right forefinger and thus maintaining pressure on the shaft.
@kevskigolf13 жыл бұрын
@GolfAus since watching the FLW video my whole approach to the game has changed. from trying to get to the shaft on a perfect inclined plane etc etc to feeling the force and pressures and working out how to move that around the body. you know what i mean. it was a revelation. i didnt "get-it" before then. you should come to Secret in the Dirt and start a thread, alot of folk there would love to hear your ideas directly although i understand if there is a conflict with ABS

Hogan was a left hander playing right, he was a tremendous left sided thrasher with a strong grip and suffered from a viscous low hook under pressure.To prevent this he weakened his grip which forced him to train,strenghthen,co-ordinate his right side enabling to become a consistent power striker BEfore his car accident.
@GolfAusBradleyHughesGolf7 жыл бұрын
graham jones That he was a left hander is actually a myth. He was a full blown right hander- check out photos of him signing autographs or repairing his clubs-.. this is misquoted as his first golf club was left handed.. not that he was left handed. Dont know who started the myth but amazing it is still believed
@GolfAusBradleyHughesGolf7 жыл бұрын
graham jones excerpt from 1987 Golf Digest Interview "GOLF: You were a natural left-hander who took up the game right-handed, weren't you? HOGAN: No, that's one of those things that's always been written, but it's an absolute myth. The truth is, the first golf club I owned was an old left-handed, wooden-shafted, rib-faced mashie that a fellow gave me, and that's the club I was weaned on. During the mornings we caddies would bang the ball up and down the practice field until the members arrived and it was time to go to work. So I did all that formative practice left-handed. But I'm a natural right-hander."
@grahamjones73717 жыл бұрын
Probably a classic cheeky Hogan misdirection. in other interviews he said different and in writing in his classic book on page 30 he states "I was born left-handed" " I was switched over to doing thing right handed when i was a boy but I started golf as a left-hander" But youre missing the point, he became a great power-striker when he weakened his left hand and used his right side ie he was ambidextrous and was at his peak B4 his accident! He is on interview stating that and was slightly embarrassed that his post accident swing is the one that everyone worships!
@grahamjones73717 жыл бұрын
So I think one of his big secrets was that he was ambidextrous, that magic changing blend of left and right athletic power and co-ordination in his golf strike.
@grahamjones73717 жыл бұрын
I am now self taught but i was lucky/unlucky that Hogans fundamentals was my first and main book on golf. I was unlucky for eg that to copy his neutral/weak left hand a right hander like me needs a lot of left side training/strengthening/ co-ordinating, Ive learnt to hit to swing reasonably well with my left arm only But this led to the ridiculous situation of being better with my left arm only than my right arm only. Last year I worked a lot on my right arm only resulting in an improvement that now on a good day I can hit draws/fades at will, but looking back Id probably saved a time/effort if Id started with a stronger left hand like most top pros!

my hands start the downswing... the way I start the hands down is by firing the hips... so I have decided the beauty of KZbin golf videos is to allow otherwise decent people to be completely rude to each other while viewing videos of an honorable sport.

i stumbled across that right elbow drop one day getting pissed off and throwing my club. It is a natural move. If you watch lacrosse players shooting underhand you will see the very same movement as for i played lacrosse and once i started incorporating that feeling into my golf swing i was far more consistent and much longer. Take a practice swing while looking at the target, you will see what i mean.

he squared the club to neutral but did not keep rotating the hands. he then kept the neutral through rest of swing. hope that helps
@thescarletpimpernel50653 жыл бұрын
His swing indicates there are only two items of concern in the swing to hit the ball with power and accuracy. The club must travel on an inside path back from the ball much further than players imagine initiated by rotation of the right shoulder turning out of the way keeping club low to the ground on extended take away ( this forces a slight straightening of the right leg and weight transfer to inside right foot) left arm staying across front of chest. Wrist with cupping of the wrist. This forces or enables a movement to the left of the entire body getting the weight to the outside of the left foot. That is the critical factor in a golf swing. it helps create that dropping into the position you talk about and brings the club back to the ball along the path you describe.You have to be on the outside of left foot for rotation through the ball. His footwork was incredible but it is really set up by the takeaway of the club inside, you can really strike with a lot of force from this position and strike squarely. The weakened grip is to hit slight bleeder left to right.The Canadian guy had very similar swing. but was taller. Knudson. Elkington too.

Obviously Hogan had his grip secret. But the main difference with Hogan's swing was that he turned his shoulders from the lower part of his body and not the upper part of his body. But it was pressure on the ground with his right foot that turned his body, in the second stage of the back-swing

Good video again... What do you think why even tour players can´t copy Mr. Hogan´s pivot? I think Zach Johnson and even Hunter Mahan try to emulate some position´s nowadays - but never anyone came close in over 60 years... There where 1000´s clones of Jack and Tiger - but never clones of Hogan, Snead, Trevino, Moe and Knudson....

@tarifachris equipment........those guys used heavy meat axes set up flat to continually train the golfing muscles to come from around the body so the pivot had to function properly. Just like you are what you eat....your swing will evolve from what you wield.

Something that I cant wrap my mind around is this. As he is pivoting around that right leg I just cant understand how he is actually keeping his weight on that right foot. I've seen this position in so many of the good golfers and it makes no sense when I look at it because it really, really looks like he, (and they) are using the right leg as the pivot and getting all of the weight over on the left. I wonder if you could take the time to really explain that a bit if its something you think is worthwhile.

some of it is a timing thing. The weight DOES eventually sort of fall left but he had worked that into his timing to start the downswing etc
@williamhoughton71175 жыл бұрын
I believe it is a lot more simple as an action than it would seem. I think his arm swing corresponds to his legs. He is walking, much like Bill Melhorn advocates. The left knee takes the arms up, the right knee brings them down. Everything from the ground up.
@williamhoughton71175 жыл бұрын
The cupped wrist is a natural product of the difference between his hand path and clubhead path. The clubhead starts straight back, while the hand path is well to the inside. He just allows the hands to fold naturally, creating the cupped left wrist and a beautiful angle of the right wrist. He then takes his arms to the ball with his pivot and let's gravity do most of the work.
@Realtimeradiolive11 жыл бұрын
i been reviewing Ben Hogans swing and 100% of pros nowadays have the same post impact position there right arm is past the ball and is parallel to the ground the club is pointing up(supination),me and Hogan have a similarity where our "practice swings" have that, the lack of ball contact lets the hands release easy in a practice swing,i dont think ben hogan supinated on purpose he let it happen and his real shot shows it.his wrist turn over closer to when the hand get near his chest.

ironically, the heavier the "axe" and heavier your right arm, the harder it is to hold back centrifugal force, which proves your release is incorrect.

swagcity said: "I just dont understand how getting the club that flat makes it easier to hit targets." Hogan never said it was easier. If you read Five Lessons, he uses the analogy of learning to strike a golf ball well as akin to learning to play the piano well. He even said something to the effect that whenever he stopped playing for even a short period of time, he would play poorly and have to bone up on the basics, much like a piano player bones up on playing the scales. But the flatness you mention is an illusion. If you watch down the line video closely, you'll see that his clubshaft spends a lot of time on plane, not flatter than the plane. It is something like 90% of the swing on plane, and only 10% of the swing flatter than the plane. His swing only appears flat the entire time because his hands tend not to rise above his shoulders in the down the line view. But watch closely how Hogan starts with an upright posture at address and then bends over during the swing (and notice the severe head drop motion both in the backswing and the through-swing). His shoulders start on a flat plane prior to the backswing, but quickly steepen both back and through the ball, as a result of his posture going from upright to bent over. The reason he doesn't shank the ball or hit it fat is because he sticks his butt out behind him during the backswing to create room for the shaft to return almost precisely to the address plane at impact. He also has some bend in his wrist at impact, preventing the fat shot. He never said his swing was easy to imitate.
