I like that youre not trying to claim some miracle cure, just providing basic, common sense tips to change the mindset and improve over time. Ive had the chipping yips for few years now and Ive had some great rounds in that time but only when I hit greens on approach. Cant wait to try these tips. Got my subscription

My chipping has gotten MUCH better over the last month, since I've stopped thinking about the chip and pitch in "mechanical" terms and started to simply allow my arms/hands to relax, and my torso to feel like it's "flowing" through the shot as it turns towards the target.
@Longbody1000 Жыл бұрын
You have just described exactly my yips. As a youth I was a great chipper and suddenly I lost it. I chunk and thin everything I have so much anxiety that I end up putting to avoid chipping but sometimes you have to. The guys I play with just take the piss which makes the anxiety far worse. Ive tried all the chipping advice which looks at technique rather than the mind set. I shall try this as it makes perfect sense. Thanks.

Of (what feels like) thousands of videos I have watched on chipping this has been one of the best. I am now effectively chipping with no weight on my right foot as having to keep my balance stops me leaning forward in my stroke and topping, which was one of the main problems. Thanks Matt!

Thanks Matt, I've never been able to chip without the yips. It was so bad that I started using the claw type of grip for chipping. If I tried chipping with the regular grip it was like I got electrocuted. But if I used the claw, it usually worked. One problem is that with the claw you cant get any distance. So again, thanks for your video, I'm trying......

Great video. Letting my hands and arms separate from my body is a sure way of yipping the chip. Rarely happens theses days, but they’re always lurking... not unlike a shank. I feels its presence. Interesting, but the standing on one foot swing fixed the shot out of the hosel as well.

Never gave, grip pressure a thought, until now. Thanks Matt.
@dazalenko42503 жыл бұрын
And don't think about it again imo , grip pressure will naturally get lighter with experience and confidence. Think only about where you wan the tool you are using to contact the thing you are using it to hit and how you want the tool to manipulate the thing you are hitting at contact. Eg if it was a hammer and nail you only think about hitting the nail and if you want to drive it down, bend it over fwds, bend it left, bend it backwards etc and amazingly you can accomplish any of these without thinking about grip pressure but an experienced carpenter will have lighter grip pressure due to developed feel the body achieves for saving energy. No novice can hit a nail like a carpenter just by thinking about a light grip, swing path etc, they have concentrate extra hard on the task (hitting the middle of the nail) thats all or they will miss the nail. The rest comes naturally with practice.
@davepalmerton24293 жыл бұрын
Great tips, Matt. I had those tendency's that you talked about, and had no confidence at all when chipping. Really tried to concentrate on ball placement in my stance, and my balance, more weight on the lead leg. This has helped tremendously. It is amazing what using a natural swing can do.

I love the short game, like chipping and pitching, 9i bump and run is my go to shot, reasonably good success with a flop when required!! Whilst caddying a pro in my group had the yips from the 50yd mark, I couldn't believe what I was seeing, turns out it dates back a few years to when he was practicing on the range at an event next to a big name tour pro, he got nervous and started duffing and shanking little 50yd pitches, totally wrecked his confidence!!

I’ve had them about 3 years. It can be so disheartening. What does help me is I barely hold the club with my right hand. I let my left (lead) hand do the work and really feel the weight of the club head. I feel your pain. Good luck my friend.

What you have demonstrated is a pitch, not a chip. The yip problem usually arises on a more delicate attempt from perhaps only 1 or 2 meters off the green where accuracy is demanded.

I'm struggling at the moment recently changed courses with a total contrast in ground conditions.... I played at a very dry sandstone based golf course where it was very much Linksy... Then transfering to a parkland course which is soft underfoot and now I've got mental issues of digging in..... This is causing thins and rushing the swing

During a playing lesson my club pro said to me before a tough chip; relax your forearms, which of course means gripping lighter. Probably then hit the best chip for a very long time.

aka choking.... its what happens when you overthink your shot and/or get nervous when people are watching, and try to do something different than what youve practiced and your body doesnt like the change... practice more and itll go away... for some people itll never go away when theres people watching... thats called social anxiety or performance anxiety.... but the way to cure it is to practice at it till it goes away... it happens in all sports/activities

Not too sure about the one-legged drill. I frequently finish a chipping attempt with one leg in the air, so if I start on the wrong leg I could end up with both of them in the air. I do remember exactly when my trouble started. Many many years ago. Highland Reserve Golf Course in Florida. Hired a set of TaylorMade Burner irons, as with most hire clubs the Sand Wedge was part of the set. Missed the 1st green, looked down at the wedge, had no confidence with the way it looked and then factored in the thick bladed grass you get in hot climates. No matter what I did, I could not find a way to make the wedge work for me. Got home and found that I had no idea what to do with my own clubs and never recovered. It got soo bad that one particular shot left my club pro rolling around on the grass laughing. The temperature was minus 3 and the grass was very frosty but he showed no sign of wanting to get back up on his feet!

@greeners13 Жыл бұрын
Watching your video I think I’ve been given duff info from others. They said I don’t need a long backswing as it’s only a short shot but this has now led me to being fast and inconsistent. I can see you’re taking it back to waste high which I was always told was too far but yours definitely looks looser and more relaxed.

@dazalenko42503 жыл бұрын
Think back spin the ball not hit the ball may help you, try to visualise how fast you want the ball to back spin, it might help you keep your hands active without swinging too hard. Yips can come from thinking about other wrong shit then the last second the hands try to say 'what the hell do you expect me to do now the arms are moving so fast you idiot?' Next time just let them take the lead and deal with the ball, the arms will follow, they have too as they are attached and the body will cooperate as the hands are the boss.
@tonymiddlehurst8438 Жыл бұрын
Nothing about the strike? I can't stop myself hitting behind the ball even when I'm looking way ahead of it.
@sionnachog894 Жыл бұрын
The difficulty with the yips is that you will hit a hundred fine chips on the practice. ground then go out on the course and duff the first chip. It is not technique, it is mental, no amount of practice will cure it until the mental problem is solved....don't ask me how!
@mguo81903 жыл бұрын

@dazalenko42503 жыл бұрын
Just try to hit a thin shot with back spin(leading edge into the equator spinning it downwards) , the longer the shot the faster the back spin try to create. You are all welcome, If that doesn't work you probably couldn't hit a nail with a hammer. But I bet you can because with a hammer in hand you are only thinking about hitting the nail in the middle of the head but with club in hand you are thinking of grip, balance, wrist action, clubhead path and all sorts of stupid s#@t. Just spin the equator backwards with the leading edge, you'd probably be great at it cos it's like bending a nail with a hammer. Again you are welcome.
@colwalker32202 жыл бұрын
Is there a reason why you youtube coaches all refer to pitching as chipping? Do you get more hits/likes this way? How about you do some actual chipping videos? Or simply name them pitching which is what you're clearly doing to that flag 🤔Ps other than that I thought the vid was very good 👍
