I can honestly say that the video you did with Tyler McGhie on the 50 Yard Shot is possibly the best video on the internet on improving your pitching technique. Watching this video, seeing when the backswing is too long is 100% what everyone mostly does and why feeling less backswing and accelerating into the ball is so important to work on.

I can play your videos in relation to what I'm working on, and it's a great guideline and reference point all while I'm hitting shots. From ground force, to leading with the hips, trusting the front leg at finish and now this... It's an awesome library to refer to. You're a wonderful explainer of steps if that makes any sense. Very nice 🤌 I started with Larry's straight armed swings and did my matrix that way, I find that swing very repratable with every wedge and it produces similar ball flights. Today I was finally able to go to a real range outside for the first time this season, and boy was my alignement off after winter season in the simulator! After fixing the alignement I was able to implement the things I had been working on indoors. I can't wait for the courses to open here in Finland! KEY POINT @ 7:26 I was about to address this but you touched on it here but it needs emphasis. The key to a great wedge matrix is hitting your natural shots and then writing down the number. DONT write down the number and try to manufacture the shot. Your body will remember & reproduce the natural motion way more consistently than the manufactured/adjusted one.
@Adtrevino372 жыл бұрын
Great video, and it's something I neglect to really hone in on. I usually just play by feel and visualize what I want the shot to look like and tell my body how hard to swing, but having a more dialed and repeatable method is going to be better.

Best advice was to make a swing you can repeat comfortably and see how far it goes vs. picking a yardage and trying to make a swing to fit. Way more natural. I've never done this and really, really need to.

Hi Matt, really enjoyable video. I use the Phil Mickleson’s hinge and hold method, can’t understand why this is not taught or recommended by many pro’s. Amazing, been practicing this a ton lately and it's starting to show at the range, excited to see how it is on the course. Another benefit - this is something that can be practiced without wearing yourself out too much, so it can be done often if you have the setup (On the topic of practicing too much or past fatigue). For me, I have a skytrak in the garage so it's a great way for me to practice something very useful very often without accumulating overuse injuries (knock on wood). I also adjust how much I'm choking down to adjust the distance around my known levels without needing to think about adjusting my length of swing. Do you do that? Last year my favorite distance was probably 100-105 (full 54), but this year it's starting to look like 80-85 (smooth 59deg, 3/4 54, 1/2 49deg for me)

I prefer to keep it very compact, almost like my trailing upper arm is glued to my rib cage for shots inside 60 yards. I also prefers to have my wedges with slightly bigger grip and using the +4 grips (or build standard grip with extra 4 tapes on top of the extra 2 tapes for my wedges and short irons) so I can choke down and feels the same. I have difficulty controlling the length of my back swing and prefers to finish either high and open or thru and around. So I have sort of a short and a "to the top" back swing to a high finish with face open of a roll over and choking down various amount to control distance. I play a 46, 52, 58, which technically 2 wedges. My 58 goes 85 yards max, ie. to the top back and finish rolling over. And choke down and really soft grip to sort of nurse the ball to land soft to control distance. Wonder this sort of "system" makes sense? I had tried a 50/54/60 and tried the 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 back and thru symmetry thing and wrote them on the shaft and when on actual play, I find myself distracted. Worked fine on launch monitors and a mat. Maybe I did not practice enough to make it second nature. :(

Personally, ive had difficulty dialing in “waist to waist” or “arm parallel”…especially on the course it seems for me to take my mind off visualizing the shot. Ya end up chasing what you are doing in the video, aww im hitting poor shots, let me try another and stay more compact ect… I started listening to certain songs that have different tempos, say 75-85bpm for partial wedge shots. So your preshot routine you are “singing you song” that gives you the backswing and downswing beat. For me, if frees me up and allows me to swing like an athlete instead of like a robot and gives me more consistent yardages on the course under pressure.

@Somefatdude2 жыл бұрын
Not a fan of backswing systems for partial shots. I’d rather feel the distance via controlling the “whoosh”/speed/hit through impact. I find that FOR WEDGES and PUTTER when I am focused more on impact/speed, then the backswing will do what it must to make that happen. I think for the full swing, there will be a little more thought than that, but not for wedges and putter. I also think that most people carry too many wedges and hit too many full shot wedges. Instead, use 3 wedges at most and control the hit to flight the ball down more for better control and accuracy.
