Perfect swing for those of us who don't have the time to put in 20+ hours of practice time every week! Simple and straight forward! Trackman and launch monitors are great for the range and gathering info, but you can't take 'em on the course! This swing you can take to the course!!! I actually use the key points in this swing and have for a few years now...I adapted it from an article David wrote for Golf Digest a few years ago for amateur golfers where he laid out the basics of this swing for those of us who don't have time to practice a lot every week...it works!

Ryan Moore's Golf swing seems to be similar. Jim Furyk's as well. This method seems to add the wrist hinge on the downswing (like Moore and Furyk) as supposed to setting it on the backswing. I tried it, and my ball really penetrates. I can feel and hear that "swish" sound. But it really kills you if your sequencing on the downswing falters. Lower body rotation first on the downswing is key in order for the plane to flatten/level out.

Implemented this into my golf swing, specifically after watching David Ledbetter giving gm golf a lesson. I got rid of my shanks and could actually hit a wedge probably knocked 10 strokes off my regular score

How could someone thumbs down this video, comparing the two swings? It's night and day and clearly is a HUGE improvement.... The A Swing is very interesting. I've played for 32 years at a low handicap level and the back swing is something I've always felt to not be the most natural of endeavors, often trying to manipulate it to come up with results. The downswing has speed to it, so automatically it is a much more natural move lessening the time to "think and manipulate". Anything that simplifies getting to the top in the correct position to bring the club head back to the ball on the proper attack plane is a great thing. Many should really look at this seriously. I think it could really click with a lot of people.

Chris Fox the downswing/transition is not natural at all its actually quite counter intuitive and by far the most important part of the swing

Chris Fox i dont need to but ok. do you struggle with getting too far inside on the way back? try (as a righty) to support the weight of the club at setup (and on the way back) by moving your right wrist toward radial deviation

+FullTimeHypocrite I play to a zero. I'm doing fine. I was simply making a general statement, which this video supports. If you're able to manipulate your downswing at 90 to 100+ mph to a square impact, regardless of the position the backswing puts you in at the top, then more power to you. I was saying that I don't know how someone could thumbs down this video after seeing how it helped this player. It's an interesting concept to free up the ability to get back to the ball correctly.

Chris Fox all i was pointing out is that the downswing is just as active an motion as the backswing is, oviously if youre trying to engage small muscles to time impact you will screw up. let me add that the man does not have a solid top. at least i dont recall seeing a single pga pro with this much left wrist extension at the top.

Golf swings are all about muscles firing in a certain magnitude. The more you stretch a muscle the greater contraction (or reaction, in lay terms) you're going to get. The plane of a backswing is not about making it look "pretty" its about getting certain muscles to contract in an orchestrated pattern in order to produce a club head that is square at impact and this video highlights that idea.

Did it? I practiced this through the winter, first time out on the course this season today, all i can say is my irons were the best I've ever hit, longer than ever, driver was different, i struggled with that, a lot of low hooks, and one snap hook out of bounds, looking at other A Swing comments seems to be a common problem with driver, I'll admit i only practiced with irons, a session at the range with driver might well help, I'm similar handicap, 3.8 at close of last season

I tried the A swing during a round yesterday. The grip will be hard to get used too as it feels like it hinders mobility. The shorter backswing and syncing of the arms and body made it easier to make contact with the ball. My results were highly accurate shots. Distance seemed a little shorter, but I'll hold judgment on that until I practice some more.

+Matthew Jones As you can see on the PGA there are many ways to take the club back (Jim F., Freddie C. etc) but as long as it comes into the ball in the correct position which can be done with many strange swings you will get the same result. How many "things" has David Leadbetter been associated with? gimmicks, etc.? teachers can ruin a golfers game that's a known fact. I've never had a lesson but I've shot in the 60's on my local courses and still shoot in the 70's with a swing that is anything but perfect.

I understand but it's clear that some people have a knack for the game and others don't, clearly not this guy. Freddie C Jim F have takeaways which still allow them to function but no one has the hand to eye coordination to hit repeatable solid shots from the position the person in the video is in

+Matthew Jones I do agree with that, the way he fans this club face open he's lost right there but whose to say if he could fix that one problem he could work the rest out himself. I went to a PGA instructor because I was coming too far inside on impact causing heel hits or outright shanks. His solution? you need to start coming over the top and get use to the ball going somewhere right. I said oh so you want me to pick up another fault to fix this one? and believe it or not he said yes I do.

It's an improvement in this guy's swing, for sure, but many of the details cited by the instructor/narrator simply aren't true. A golf swing is more than the jargon that can be used to describe it. I'm trying to figure out what, aside from the added quirks in the backswing, is supposed to be different from Lead's theory for the past 30 years or so. If you look at the "after" stills here, you're really talking about the old idea of going slightly steeper on the backswing halfway back as a kind of insurance against being too flat-and-around on the backswing (leading to the typical over-the-top), and then from that slightly steeper shape the move from the lower body tends to flatten the shape and bring the sweet spot to the ball from a shallower approach, dissipating less force downward and propelling the ball more efficiently forward. All good, but it's always been good, hasn't it? Cf. Hogan, Grout, Snead, Harmon(s), etc. And Lead himself, for three decades. And btw -- if there are "many different ways to achieve the A swing," how different is that from saying the A swing isn't all that structurally specific? I don't say this to be unduly critical: It seems like marketing to me, a repackaging of the very good ideas Leadbetter has always had, with the most important elements left entirely intact (thank goodness). In fact, that's not only not critical, it's complimentary. I'm not sure any "evolution," especially this one, especially with this new idea of the first half the backswing, was ever necessary in the first place.

steve Fowler I kind of agree but that's how the game is marketed these days, Stack and Tilt was the last 'Big Thing' I remember. There are thousands of different ways to swing the club. Thousands of plane combinations. Having a certain theory is not b.s., it is using one of these ways and naming it as your method. These are not new ideas. Ben Hogan had a "method". It is not correct. There is no correct way to swing the club. Building a swing that works for you biologically, that gives the results you desire is your method. You can call it the "cynical KZbin crybaby" method if you like...

if his right leg is extended at the top he is not coiling!! That is a turn, you should know better. Sam Snead turned, and so does this guy. If his trail leg remains in flexion then yes he is "coiling," but it doesn't. His right hip is higher than his left and his trail leg is in extension. #nocoilhere.

+Alan Martins Given your inability to correctly punctuate an English sentence, I have no idea what you meant. In reference to David Ledbetter, I think he sucks as a golf guru. I have one of his worthless CD's in which he advises addressing the ball so that it is directly below a right handed athlete's left nipple. That does not work for wedge shots. Also, Ledbetter does not sufficiently emphasize training the hands so that they release to the Hogan position directly opposite the median point of the lead thigh. I also think his teaching techniques made Michelle Wie too mechanical and his long practice sessions crippled her. Ledbetter = failure.

Have to laugh, this is nothing new Joe Dante was teaching this method back in the 50s, he even wrote a book called the 4 magic moves to better golf , I personally have been using his method myself +1 handicap and teach it as well to my students for last 4 years. David Ledbetter should at least give credit to Joe Dante for this technique instead of trying to pass it off as his method, shame on him.

Andrew Linch I think your criticism is a bit unfair. As was mentioned in the video, these ideas are just exaggerations or "extensions" of what David has endorsed in his 40 years of teaching: steeper shaft set in the backswing allows the club to shallow in the downswing, and the arms and body need to be synchronized. I don't know much about about Joe Dante (this is actually the first time I've heard of him) and had to do a little research. Correct me if I'm wrong, but what you're claiming about Dante is that the early wrist set originated with him. Or perhaps it's the steeper shaft plane in the backswing. That's possible, idk. It's also possible that someone you've never heard of thought of it before Dante. Who should be given the credit? What I do know, is that David does say that he's not the only guy to think of or implement this movement in the backswing, and gives numerous examples of players both old and modern (Calvin Peete and Ryan Moore to name two) who have this kind of action in the backswing. And as far as the early wrist set goes, which most people naively believe is what defines David's teaching, although David endorses this, it is not makes the A swing different. There are even some of David's players who don't use an early wrist set (e.g. Nick Price). It's really all about the individual, and not a "method". Most people (such as the man in the video) suck the club inside to start with and get steep on the dowswing. The A-swing is just an exaggerated motion to get such people to feel the opposite; that's all. Even though the swing has been analyzed to the nth degree and we "understand" it so well now, most golfers haven't improved their technique at all, which as an instructor yourself, I imagine you find frustrating. This is just an attempt to alleviate what is perhaps the most common fault among amateur golfers, and make the game more fun for all, which is what it's all about. :)
