Lots can be said about this movie. I considered posting the entire drill scene, but this fragment captures it pretty well on its own. Buy this movie!
In the military, you are confronted with your drill instructor practically immediately, he personifies violence and aggression.
Brutalization and desensitization are what happens at boot camp. From the moment you step off the bus you are physically and verbally abused: countless push-ups, endless hours at attention or running with heavy loads, while carefully trained professionals take turns screaming at you. Your head is shaved, you are herded together naked and dressed alike, losing all individuality. This brutalization is designed to break down your existing mores and norms and to accept a new set of values that embrace destruction, violence, and death as a way of life. In the end, you are desensitized to violence and accept it as a normal and essential survival skill in your brutal new world.

I'm sure it was for some legal liability reason of some kind. DI would probably get in trouble if he choked the laugher out of Pyle. If Pyle choked himself he wouldn't do a good enough job of it. So Pyle's ordered to fall into Gunny's hand and the fact that he ends up getting accidentally choked is just a happy coincidence.

I actually tried to enlist in the Armed Forces. In 1986, I was interested in joining the Air Force (I was disqualified because I wear glasses). In 1992, I took a test and failed. I was almost 30 at the time. Anyway, if I did join the Army or Marines, I wouldn't keep a straight face if my drill instructor kept yelling at me and swearing like a street kid. I'd burst out laughing! Then I'd have to do 200 push-ups, run the obstacle course and get slapped around a few times. (I don't know if drill instructors do that today, but boot camp IS rigorous and regimented in order to strengthen physical and mental discipline.) "Sir! Yes, Sir!"

@Ed basic certaintly was in this movie. You knew not to laugh. Co's and instructors said some funny stuff in there but you knew that laughing would be a huge mistake. As far as the rest of the movie goes, I haven't seen it and I wasn't around for Nam but I can certainly speak to the realities of basic and those first few weeks. Ends up feeling like the best thing you've ever done for you're life but not during the first couple of weeks you're hating yourself for thinking you made a huge mistake.

@Ed what you see on KZbin under basic videos and bootcamp are just that. Videos. They know the cameras are rolling. Its what you don't see that you could only see if you went in that makes this video more realistic. They do not mess around. Ever. Especially during wartime.

Its not the opposite of what the movie wanted dude come on. You seriously think that? This movie was based on the realities of life during wartime in the core in that era. Its all fun and games until those cameras are turned off. You wouldn't dare laugh or smile at them. Joining was and still is the best thing that's happened to many people..you just think the opposite those first few weeks and they are pure hell. Joining the military is still the best thing that's ever happened for alot of us and it opened up doors that were never before even realistic or imaginable. That's that.

Boot camp @ MCRD San Diego wasn't long enough for me; Just when I figured it couldn't get any worse, I was informed that bc I was too weak & unmotivated I was dropped to Physical Conditioning Platoon 2311 w/SSgt Wenner for additional training. I wanted to commit suicide but I couldn't bring myself to give Sgt Davis the satisfaction of winning so I hung in there for a few more weeks.
