What a defense, that was probably the most impressive thing about this game :). When Parting is in trouble he's the best player in the world, but for some reason he only plays his absolute best when he's nearly lost a game.

It's common for any game to lose parts of its fanbase over time but the release of hots disappointed a big part of the community while also splitting the community into WoL and HotS. After LotV there's a third split and the game have now lost so much of its root that a lot of players feel that its an entire different game, some for the better but for most players that bought WoL when it first came out have abandon the game. My own opinion is that WoL were more or less fine, what was the big problem with WoL in terms of balance were mostly caused by bad maps and blizzard closed the doors for gaming organizers and when they slowly opened up the doors for professionally made maps the damage were already dealt in the community that WoL were not balanced. In terms of history of RTS the idea of having an expansion is generally to fill in strategy holes and rebalance a little but really not make massive changes as they did on both expansions of sc2, this only causes the community to split. Expansions should focus on the continueing of the campaign which sc2 really do got one of the best in RTS. In terms of strategy holes of original sc2 zerg and terran were lacking space controlling units such as lurkers and mines and protoss were lacking in being capable of retreat. What they brought in for HotS were a burrowing siege unit for zerg and one of the most random generated unit in RTS, WM and the mothership even though it did solve the retreat issue could have been perhaps something more simple like stasis for sentries, or an air unit but as mothership did left some room for a protoss to allin and perhaps make enough damage and just retreat for free. It works so I may be going a bit too much into it. Simply put, blizzard wasn't listening to the community and instead went for graphics, explosions and shiny gimmicky units that looked good but when it came to the positional chess like strategy which starcraft are known for they never put much thought to it. During beta and after release the patches shows blizz really trying to fit unit into the game that never fit in the first place.
