A lot has been made of Gon Freecs’ morality, as a result of Togashi deviating from the standard Shonen protagonist blueprint. Today I give my perspective on the character and try to provide a new lens to inspect the character under. Hope the video is enjoyed!

Tbh I never really saw Gon as "evil", more like a realistic depiction of what would happen if such a young, inexperienced kid would be granted so much power. He has no idea about how the world works or moral ambiguity. As scary as it may sound, you always dehumanize people you don't like judging from your naive morality as a kid. He wasn't ready to face reality so early, so of course this ended in him becoming a walking time bomb.

Agreed. From the perspective of the Hunter organization, Gon was a perfect child soldier. He isolated Pitou and eliminated them with little collateral damage, sacrificing himself in the process similar to Netero. I think it sheds light on the morality of those who trained and enabled Gon knowing what he could be capable of. Wing even expressed his misgivings about training Gon to become a monster.

One of the best analysis of Gon I’ve seen. I’ve always defended Gon against people that call him inconsistent or selfish. My personal vision of Gon is of a kid who grew up in a loving family with his aunt and grandmother. But he also grew up in the wild, facing all its danger and its incredible natural selfishness based solely on survival. He lives like a loving wild animal, meaning he takes on life head on without worrying about things like judgment or consequences. Truly one of the most interesting characters in the whole show. Can’t wait to see where his character goes in the future.

Bro, it's like people forget that he's 12. Of course he would be inconsistent and selfish he's a literal child being pushed into a morally gray world with a naiive and pure point of view.

I mean he is inconsistent and he is selfish but there is nothing wrong with that. Most shonen main characters are selfish. Yeah he is just a kid, I don't think gon being selfish or inconsistent is nessecarrily a bad thing that needs to be defended, it's not like people dislike gon. It's just part of his character if anything it adds to him as a character even if it is a negative trait overal to be selfish, but selfishness is a human trait.

This is why to me Togashi is GOAT. He knows how to develop plotlines extremely well but HXH is ultimately a character driven story, as opposed to say The Matrix which is less about the characters and more about the over arching narrative. Togashi knows how to write characters with real depth that don't feel flat. This is why HXH is my favorite manga/shonen/anime

Not once when watching HxH did I ever think gon was a hypocrite or inconsistent, on the contrary he’s like one of the most consistent characters I’ve seen, like he’s not lawful good, he’s lawful neutral, he has his own code and he strictly and unflinchingly sticks to it, he also happens to be the goat

The only problem I have with this title is that Gon is a child, and children are in fact monsters. The power to act without the life experience to know when not to is what differentiates humans from the vast majority of animals.

I like your content, but here I feel like you are saying almost the same things as other people in essays about why Gon IS a monster. These videos are not denying him being a really amazing character, just a human being nor that there is no such thing as right and wrong. But it is about Gon's childish mindset (hypocritical) being dangerous, not just for people around him, but as well to himself. That seeing world as black and white / good or bad is wrong because the world just doesn't work that way... as you say yourself in this video. But Gon does think about people as good or bad... and only from the perspective of how they treat him and his friends. Which is why Wing and manny KZbinrs call him monster.

Haven’t watched the video yet so I’m not sure if you mention the video, but “The Morality of Gon Freecss” is one of my favorite analysis videos that goes really in depth about this same topic. Too many people misunderstand Gon’s character and his arc as a whole, but Togashi’s writing is honestly some of the best I’ve ever seen and he explores the real life possibilities of throwing this 12 year old kid into a terrifying and messed up world. Will definitely be watching the video when I get the chance, but wanted to say I love your other videos so I have no doubt this one will be amazing as well. Keep up the great work man!

Honestly I don't like this title, nobody in the world finishing watching HxH and think, Gon's evil/monster/hypercrites etc. Those analysis only comes from the loud but minority nerds who want to analyze the shit out of this anime and writing an assay about it. They simply overthinking yet ironically taking tons of things in face value in order to make their arguements. Anyone whose world isn't black and white can appreciate a character like Gon, who isn't black and white. And he is more real than those who call him a hypercrite.

I wonder. You seem to look at storytelling from a more philosophical lense. But at the same time what you say tends to make sense in context of what you are talking about rather BS I am familiar with with this kind of viewing. I don't mind your analysis but I think you are being too harsh on those who call him a monster. Personally I never really called him one since I thought he was always genuine in his behavior and that's how most of us would act and he is a damn child. But I understood why others would call him that. Idk which side of the community you are on but the ones I see who called him that never really said it because they hated him. At least that's not the feeling I got. Alecxzander or whatever that KZbinr name is who I believe popularized that view loves his character to death as he does most of togashi characters. And i believe half of the community even hated him for that view

nod, I agreed with most of the video, and liked the ideas and train of thought he presented. There were many good points and well stated too. If i had any issue, it would be with the way it opens on an assumption or starting premise, there's "others" out there that have the 'wrong' view of Gon currently. Early in the video, rather than hearing what the creator thinks, I am wondering who he is talking about or to? What do they believe.... what does he believe people believe? Starting on a narrative that isnt well defined and slightly negative, attempting to contradict or disprove a narrative that he claims many fans have, but hasnt layed out in much detail yet, it felt like detracted from the rest of the video which felt pretty humble and enjoyable to listen to. As a viewer I'd prefer to just be presented with your thoughts, your ideas, your interpretation, ect. Theres no need to start off attempting to poison the well or setup some strawman, or present one's point of view in a lense in which many "others" are wrong, and Im here to present the 'truth'. It didnt end up feeling like that on the whole, but i would critique even bringing that up as a strong point or repeated mention, as it lends nothing positive to the video. Its already on the title. If the entire video was setting up the narrative which one wishes to deny, and focusing on that as one would a debate topic... thats fine too, albeit when dealing with fiction its much harder to be objective obviously, since theres much thats left open to interpretation, sometimes intentionally so. Someone who agrees already with that starting premise is just nodding and thinking to themself "get to it", and a viewer who doesnt agree, or perhaps even some people who may have felt or said such things about gon might shut off the video (or their critical brain) before finishing if their defenses were activated by being told they are wrong, especially before laying out your axioms, premises, and argument. Even if you think many fans are wrong, you wont convince them by telling them so bluntly, or without laying out the most carefully structured evidence based narrative and line of argument before making the final claim. No matter how well spoken or well reasoned one might be, when you trigger someone emotionally, it will be much more difficult to find agreement or common ground from there. TLDR - More flies with honey bla bla .... but anyways, it was a pretty minor thing that he didnt spend 'too much' time on, good video overall :)

This video is kind of funny but in a bad way. I'm not sure why you think Gon would be better off than any other anime protagonist based on real life. In reality, Gon would have died before he ever made it off the boat taking him to the Hunter Exam or died when he got his arm blown off and windpipe crushed from blood loss. What even is this argument? You say he would go farther because he opens himself to new ideas but in reality, that leads most children Gon's age down bad pipelines into insecurity and inceldom. You talk about how other things and ideas are vague and actions speak louder than words but this video is JUST AS VAGUE as as any other alluding to ideals and values over anything tangible. It's a nice idea to defend Hon's recklessness but just... Maybe leave aside the other stuff or at the very least lean MORE into I and get MORE specific. What are these ideas and preconceptions that people have that lead them away from the truth? What is it in modern society that causes these things and how is Gon a true breakaway. You yourself are so vague that when you criticize these things, you are unironically lining yourself up right beside them.

Brother thank you for this video. You sound like you have the "logoc" of Kurapika himself. Another thing people dont realise is that it makes real world sence that Gon would become very close to Kite very quickly as Kite saved his life 3 times and is closley related to his father. Also they endured many dangerous situations together so essentially the where brithers in arms.

The intro and outros are fire, the soundtracks sounds beautiful, the characters are incredible and interesting and likeable, the fights are good and involve strategy, it's unpredictable, the power system is creative and unique. some comment i wrote on other channels that criticize gon 1 and best one PS am not screaming at you i'm just highlighting ** GON DID NO EVIL OR WAS A HYPOCRITE ** BEING GOOD IN LIFE iSN'T AS SIMPLE AS FOLLOWING A SET OF EASY TO FOLLOW RULES THAT YOU MUST FOLLOW STRICTLY, IT DEPEND ON THE MOMENT YOU CAN KNOW HIS RIGHT IF YOU THINK WITH A MAN MIND , HE DID NOTHING WRONG A MAN RULES HE DOESNT CRY AND OBEYS LARGE GROUPS , ITS NOT A CRIME TO BE STRONGER THEN OTHERS AND CALLING WHAT IS GOOD AND WHAT IS BAD . EX : A WEAK WOMAN WILL CALL IT RAPE BEC SHE FELT VIOLATED , YOU CANT COUNT ON THE WEAK TO THINK FOR YOU the situations gon was put in is too complicated to be governed by rules , you must think in them to do what is good , not be a sheep and reperform a momerised reaction " the phantom troupe kills so bad and gon threaten to kill that mean his bad too " the dumb sheeps say

some comment i wrote on other channels that criticize gon 2 about how he is not a dumb child being independent doesn't mean selfish your not doing anything bad by not being a communist , the why you use that word here is attacking him for not being obedient to the bullshit rules on how to be normal that is in your head only your the selfish one get some help ' @Urek Mazino weak yes naive no he was never a delusional retard , what i saw is that he confess when he fails to understand do you have any proof that say otherwise @Urek Mazino nen is based on resolve , gon is not a weakling who feel fear at seeing death like when killua cut that killer heart, killing was fine because its a match both agreed on the risk of it . all hunter are like this there are good reasons to hunt and kill, animals does it so why not people too , the serial killer was just a person with his own story on why he kills so gon didn't hate him killing isnt bad if you had a target behind it and didn't use other people while doing it , killing is bad if you did it out blind pleasure . having the ability to do what is hard doesn't make you evil , to commit what others call evil for a reason is a sign of strength its a weakness to always listen to other people

some comment i wrote on other channels that criticize gon 3 its about what is selifsh . the selfless hurt himself for others by accepting hard condition on himself were the selfish doesn't , he try to preserve himself , selfish is a hard word to call someone who is not legally responsible to help others ** they dont work as opposites in terms of actions , bec you cannot demand service from others they dont work for you , you won't be selfish if you weren't self sacrificing ** ** SO NO NOT EVERYTHING SELF SERVING IS SELFISH ** ** so the real on is ** selfish is someone who personally done something uncaring about others pain and without even offering a trade that selfish . ** bec its crule ,its fine if you chase your goal and have likes and dislikes and your own personal ideology , but is the process of doing what you want it hurt others if you dont do something caring or give some trade back your selfish bec you didnt care about there pain to even give an apology ** EX: he or she steals money from their mother to buy somthing . if he didn't return it back with time or traded it with something like .... being good at the house .... and without an excuse like it was cheap , he have done something uncaring that make him selfish
