Top tip, some of those stoves have exploded due to the canister overheating from using a wide frying pan which reflects the heat back to the canister causing an explosion and fire burning down your tent... Advise not to use anything that overhangs any part of the canister area!

Unfortunately, there will be some that will try this modification in an effort to extend the burn time while at the same time using an oversized pan to prepare more food specially in remote locations that will not have those bottles in stock at a loca Walmart. Tech-Tip: pressurized liquid fuels like butane and propane must be able to boil to produce enough pressure to be forced through the plumbing and oriface so it can be burned. Much below about 45F and butane appliances like these stoves and cigarette lighters get rather cranky. As the fluid fuel boils due to pressure release, because you're channeling fuel vapor away for use, the temperature of the containment vessel will decrease. It's the same principle that allows air conditioners to work. If you don't provide external heat the temperature of the tank will drop so much that it will be too cold for the fuel to boil, right around 32F for butane.

Oh the irony.!!! First off well presented, clear and precise description of the modification. The irony is that here in Australia 🇦🇺 there was an issue of a couple of cases of the propane tank becoming too hot and bursting. The main cause of this was using too large a pan that then deflected excessive heat on to the canister. All the “old” style stoves were removed from the market and a big scare campaign to stop people using them until the next generation was brought out onto the market. The next generation incorporated an over pressure protection to disconnect the vapour flow if the pressure goes above a certain level. Now the “frozen cans”. The stoves rely on gas “vapour” to burn 🔥. Below a certain temp the liquid propane will not vaporise. The pressure drop inside the propane canister drops to such a level it appears to freeze (just the same as a refrigerator works. That’s were the added “heat sink” helps to keep the propane vaporising to use up every last bit in the can. I hope this is useful. Happy camping 🏕 and stay safe and well

Timely video!! I have had multiple stoves in the 7500 btu range without the heat sink., My remedy was usually warming the can in water or with my hands.. I had also thought of warming the can and then putting s piece of reflectix On the can.. Recently been considering buying a Iwatani stove in 15000btu range but read some of the burners meltdown., In the end I settled on a Eureka sprk 12500 btu with the heatsink in it.. I love this stove and the case that came with it seems very robust.. Something that everyone should remember is each can of fuel only had a value of so many btu’s.. If you have a powerful stove the fuel cylinder is not going to last as long as less powerful model unless you use at lower flame height.. Also, I buy my fuel at a restaurant supply store or Asian markets.. Usually half the price of a big box store.,

The drop in pressure causes the drop in temperature and the drop in temperature causes a drop in pressure...a viscous cycle. Propane is a little less susceptible to that than butane is. You can buy butane/propane mixes just for that reason. It is quite remarkable how much the temperature of a gas affects the pressure.

Great point! Thanks.

I use an one burner coleman gas stove. Works in any kind of temperature. One gallon of camp gas now runs $13.99 or you can use unlead gas.

every liquid fuel stove for the outdoor has a preheat tube to vapourize fuel before mixing with air, similar design also works for compressed gas

i have a 15,000 BTU sterno brand which appears identical to this gas one. my problem is starting and running when camping and it's pretty cold. had to revert to a coleman propane stove, but would prefer using butane for a variety of reasons.
@gonagain2 жыл бұрын
I understand that, because we are the same. We mostly use propane but pull this stove out when we have to cook inside the trailer due to weather. We like it because it's compact and very stable.

Did you check the gas consumption on the newer stove compared to the older stove? I imagine the 15,000 BTU stove would be using a lot more gas to produce that heat?
@gonagain2 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, it will use the fuel twice as fast, but we just turn it down so that the flame doesn't extend out past the bottom of the pot, which wastes gas.

Any ideas about a common complaint the the stoves cook too hot and you can't adjust them to simmer?
@gonagain2 жыл бұрын
The propane stoves won't adjust down low enough to simmer. On our propane burner, we use a heat diffuser which helps. The butane burner stoves will adjust so you can simmer.

Good video. Info is always good I don't use it but might be able to help someone else

Slightly off topic but..... I had a similar stove that only ran hot or very hot. It wouldn't run low when I wanted to simmer wat I was cooking. With so many stoves as you have, have you experienced trying to throttle back the flame? which brands would throttle back? I tossed out mine when it leaked gas where it connected to the bottle. I couldn't figure out how to fix it.
@gonagain2 жыл бұрын
Our propane stoves don't throttle back very well, but we put a flame diffuser (amzn.to/3rdVsJF) under the pan to help simmer. These butane stoves are perfect for simmering and that's why so many Asian restaurants use them at your table.

Interesting Rick but a minute too late for me. I bought a Gas One dual fuel from Amazon last month. I am coming to the end of my first can of butane- I checked and my stove does not have the butane can warmer built in 🤔

Really gr9 vid. Yeah I have too many of these floating around AND I want to use them for my campervan. So yeah, I'll do this mod. You know I'm going to have to review this vid again. Clever mod BTW.
@gonagain2 жыл бұрын
It does work! The difference is most noticeable when you are using it for longer stretches, like boiling water and making a stew or something.
@doraexplora9046 Жыл бұрын
@@gonagain OK. So I did the mod. I used 2mm thick aluminium plate shaped like the newest design. I insulated it from the chassis with plastic and rubber and moved the plate closer to the nozzle. I also took your advice and added a little insulation inside the cannister compartment. It's pretty cold here in Oz, ie down to around 11DegC which is when the Butane gives up the ghost. This means you can use it on cold morning to heat up your tea or coffee NP! BYW> NO ONE has posted anything like this.

It might be hard to find the balance to get just enough heat for the liquified gas to evaporate and not blowing the canister up due to overheating.
@gonagain11 ай бұрын
The canister only needs to be warmed slightly. The purpose of the video was to show that it works, but the price of the stove itself is so reasonable that I suggest just buying one that already has the warmer installed.
@keithmcgarrigle89212 жыл бұрын
In the UK you can buy gas canisters with 70% butaine, and 30% propane. Because propane freezes at a lower temperature, the gas still flow when it's cold? Like your channel.

That's a good thing to have, I don't think I've ever seen that mix here.

Do the two type of fuels require an orifice change?

No, it doesn't, and it comes with its own hose and attachment for using with propane.

We stock several quality brands in our emergency supplies from Korea, and Japan, and one manufactured right here in the Philippines where I am a semi-retired EX-pat. Most came with the heater strip and the one that did not has a conveniently open slit in the perfect spot to do an install. We generally purchase the 2 in 1 variant that is supplied with a hose barb that will screw into the side of the metering valve system and allow the use of our standard 11-kilo cooking gas cylinders to fuel the stove. Beautiful Bride has learned to cook up some great meals over the campfire and my assortment of camp stoves. We like the cassette stoves for emergency use indoors. My Mother-in-law is a non-camper and non-prepper so these stoves are a wonderful emergency tool for her. They are almost like cooking inside, on her kitchen range but they can be used almost anywhere. We also encourage Beautiful Daughter to practice cooking on these units in case she needs that skill away at college in a few years.

Another thing we like about them is their ability to simmer at a very low setting. Something that isn't possible with our regular propane camp stove. Phillipino food is by far my favorite and I ate a lot of it in Hawaii during the years that we lived there. I had my favorite restaurants and hole-in-the-wall places that we would go to.

I have that same dual fuel stove and actually love that I can use propane. Right now it has been incredibly difficult to find butane. Propane is abundant but butane has become a unicorn. 🤷🏼♀️
