This was, without a doubt, a one of a kind show. No matter how hard they try, this show will never ever be successfully duplicated. It had to be a blast to be on the staff or in the audience of The Gong Show. Another reason I loved growing up in the '70s.

The gong show may have saved my life. At the time of the show I was stuck at a night job I hated, Just out of a broken romance, and a time it seems like nothing was working out. But, each day I watched this show, and for a short time each day I forgot about my life, and laughed. Thank you Chuck, I am forever grateful.

And this was what prompted NBC to cancel The Gong Show in 1978,although it carried on in syndication until 1980 and was filmed elsewhere since they were also kicked out of the NBC Studios.

In 1976 I attended several Gong Shows @ one taping, on a Saturday I recall. In August of '76 the show had only been on NBC daytime a few months. These early shows pre-dated the extreme wackiness of the 1977 & 1978 NBC daytime Gong shows. But to witness the zany, "anything goes" antics of a show unlike any other on '70s daytime TV in one of NBC Burbank's smaller studios, was a real kick. Electric studio atmosphere indeed. One knew this show was destined for a brief shelf life since it eviserated all daytime American television needs. Johnny Carson's Tonight Show taped next door to Gong Show and was a calm oasis adjacent to the Chuck Barris comedy asylum. Subsequent reboots never captured the insane verve of the original 1976-1978 NBC run.

If you ever looked at all the companies that were advertising on the show it was a who's who of HUGE companies, led by Gillette. They had to be getting huge ratings. It was in a slot nobody wanted, too, but I remember people racing home at lunchtime to watch the Gong Show, even in the summer. Looks like they killed it as it was cruising along.

I know Chuck Barris said he never drank or did drugs when he did The Gong Show..especially because his daughter was on drugs at the time. But I'm not sure if that was the same for Jaye P Morgan and some of the other panel members. It wouldn't have surprised me if Jaye P Morgan was doing shots during commercial breaks

The second Jaye P. clip is from March 17, 1978. Jaye also appeared on the following week of shows which were the first shows which reused the "Chuckie Baby" band fronts from "The Chuck Barris Rah-Rah Show"; that's the last record I have of her on daytime Gong.

Jamie Farr made reference to this incident involving Jaye P Morgan in a later interview. He mentioned how he was usually the one to prevent her from exposing herself whenever Gene Gene the Dancing Machine was on stage. However, Jamie had a scheduling conflict due to other work on this particular day, so he couldn't be present to make sure things didn't get too out of hand with Jaye P.

This was one of multiple hit shows produced by Chuck Barris. The Dating Game, the Newlywed Game, and so on. Hell Barris even wrote the hit song "Palisades Park!" IF the book is to be believed, from the Dating Game moving forward, Barris worked as an international hit man for the CIA! That's just insane enough to be true.
