www.futureclas... Things to look for when buying a Land Rover Freelander mk1. Always drive before you buy otherwise you will end up with what some dude sold me on ebay, he forgot to mention all the problems. Happy ebay days....

Just come across this video, what complete and utter bollocks indeed! In my time doing accident and breakdown roadside assistance and recovery, covering Kent, Sussex, Surrey and London, the Freelander was the Land Rover model I attended least and not one had a blown head gasket, in fact, not 1 of the Rover cars fitted with the K series I attended had blown head gaskets. The main problem with the K series was, it was never designed to be installed into anything bigger or heavier than the Rover 100 and 200 series cars (remember when the Ford Sierra was first introduced, it was offered with a 1.3 engine, which suffered not only from low power, but also other issues, due to the engine being over stressed moving the mass), personally, the Freelander should have been fitted with the 2.0 petrol, which was designed for a heavier car. Many of the problems are also caused by people not understanding the effects of thermal shock on an aluminium engine design such as that of the K series. Saying all that though, I wouldn't hesitate in owning a petrol Freelander. I've lost count of how many K series engines I built, ranging from road to full race spec, but in all cases, only ever used off the shelf Payen head gaskets, even in full race spec at 220+bhp, not 1 blew a head gasket. In my experience, the head gasket is a secondary failure, due to a lack of preventative and reactive maintenance, often it's either a coolant leak at the inlet manifold or cracks around the filler neck of the expansion bottle. If you're not doing your weekly checks, then you're not going to notice the coolant level dropping, the engine will overheat and bye bye head gasket. Even if you are doing your weekly checks and you notice the coolant level dropping, but don't investigate and rectify, then the problem will gradually get worse and eventually, bye bye head gasket. Continuing to drive the Freelander with a worn diff bush, will cause premature wear of the VCU bearings and rear diff bushes, as well as other stress and impact damage to components, so quite frankly, you're not helping your issues. However, both the diff bushes and VCU bearings are service repairs, so no real issue. All the other issues in terms of the electrics are common on all makes too, in fact, when I was doing accident and breakdown recovery, the most attended were German vehicles and nearly always electrical problems, that resulted in the vehicle requiring recovery. You openly admit, you don't know what the HDC does or how it works, READ THE OWNERS MANUAL! All the information is available online if you don't have the manual. You are a prime example of why people claim particular makes or models are crap, you don't know how it works, so you can't keep it properly maintained, inevitably, it will have faults, which will end up larger faults. I've had my 2001 Td4 Freelander commercial 6 years, 4 of those years, running at it's full weight, being used as my work vehicle, driving an average of 140 miles a day (one point, I covered 10K in 3 months), all without any issues that prevented me from driving it home, yes it's got a few small issues, mainly the central locking, but I've not bothered to repair it, as it suits me how it currently works. The VCU lasted to 130k, so double what Land Rover recommend. It has been used of road, volunteer use, roadside assistance, mobile engineering, shooting/fishing wagon, multidrop home deliveries and much more. Even when it comes time for a new clutch, I'll still get it done, as I know it will see me well past 200k.

You've done 130k and you're CERTAIN you're going to get to 200k in it. WOW.... ANY CAR that doesn't average at least 400k isn't worth buying IMO. Interesting how all the enthusiasts always back it up, no matter how full of crap it is. Meanwhile there's a Canadian mechanics shop on here, pawdlick automotive or something, a guy who seemingly never slanders any cars. But he's called these complete junk and in the same category as certain very early hyundais. The cylinder sleeves are GLUED in and separate from the block FAR too often. In fact landrover was BUYING THESE BACK and sending them STRAIGHT TO THE CRUSHER. So they sound like they're about as good as Daewoos were. I'll take it from a mechanic not some enthusiast. They sell do few landrovers and range rovers here and I'm not surprised. Because if it's junk, nobody will buy it before long. Except completely car illiterate people.

I'm pretty sick of people knocking Freelanders. You can get a bad example of just about any car you choose to name. I bought a 2001 1.8 petrol Freelander sight unseen on the basis that it had 4 brand new General Grabbers fitted and the guy selling it only wanted £250. There were two issues declared on sale, both were dealt with for less than £100 and yes the Grabbers were new £600 worth of tyres. This was in 2015. I still have the car, it's taken me/us to Sweden (by road) three times, Cornwall twice, Yorkshire three times and Scotland once. If you look after your car it will look after you, I've had none of the issues that so many people knock the Freebie for so don't listen to the knockers, they just want to get on YT. This car aint never leaving this family unless I use it as my coffin!!

Im loving my Freelander 1. This is my third year with it and Im looking forward to getting the top off in summer. Yes I had a head gasket problem due to a hose wearing through and bursting. It was an easy fix and any diy mechanic could do it. Yes it has the drive shaft clunks but theyre lessened by taking wider sweeps at junctions. The parts are fairly cheap and Ill get round to doing them. As for driving it hard, well it sticks to the road like $hit to a blanket. Ill lose your Rav in the corners.

I've owned a RAV4, and it drove across mountain ranges, riverbeds and places you cannot walk on. However, my Freelander 1, Td4, 2006 with the BMW engine surpasses the RAV by many miles. Much of what the chap in the video states is true, ie, the read diff shock, the VCU & its bearings, and a few more things. But then again, the RAV had its foibles as well.Of the two, I love my Freelander. I also loved my RAV too, but the Freelander gets my vote - by far.

@@Naughty_Squad Rust? maybe the fuel tank frame, but it was the model that suffered least from rust. Some people are starting to find rust behind external plastic trim now, but show me a car that is 15+yrs that doesn't have some rust somewhere. Central locking issues? All makes and models suffer from central locking issues, usually the solenoids failing. Reverse light? Ive had to replace switches on all makes and models. Pipes rubbing? Only and issue on the Td4 inlet hose, but again, had to replace hoses on other maes and models that have rubbed.

@@Naughty_Squad Not sure where in the world you are, but having worked on dozens in the South East of England, I've yet to come across any F1s that have failed their MOT on body rust, the main area is the fuel tank cradle and lower front suspension arm, however, a lot of the "rust" on F1s is just surface rust and nothing more. If body rust is an issue, it is because the owner doesn't look after their vehicle, if they washed it after driving in a salty environment or after off roading, getting into the areas under the body, in the wheel arches and behind the trim where the crap get held, then it won't rust, same if body damage is repaired properly, water etc won't get underneath and rust it out. I ran my Freelander 1 as a work van for 6 years, on and off road, not only as a mobile engineer/mechanic, but also off road for pleasure and shooting or working in my woods, only issues was a minor water leak between the water pump and thermostat (changed both as I consider them service repairs) and the gear stick broke at a weld, but managed to drive home and was back on the road the following morning. It was regularly serviced within LR's service schedules, parts replaced when required, I did my daily checks and was proactive with maintenance and it served me well for 6 years, it never needed anything more than expected service repairs (belts, battery, bulbs, tyres, filters, wipers etc), other than the gearstick repair. I'd still have it if I could justify running a 3rd vehicle, when I'm the only driver in the house. Yes they're not the easiest to to work on around the engine, but then you have that with so many cars these days, where space is at a premium. Parts price wise, maybe you're using the wrong suppliers. I've always found Japanese vehicles to be among the more expensive, whether main dealer or motorfactors. Service wise, the full filter kits, brake pads, discs etc, were no more expensive than your average car and cheaper buying from Land Rover specialists than motorfactors (even if they actually sold those parts), Some parts, such as injectors, while expensive, aren't anywhere near the most expensive, again, I've found Japanese and German diesel injectors to cost more (even though the Td4 is a BMW engine). Maybe you've just been unlucky with your Freelander, but I know many owners, who haven't had any of the issues you're claiming, some have had theirs longer and never had a window mechanism fail, CL soleloid fail, MOT fail for rust etc. They're not a "rare" car, even today, there is quite a large onership and following, with plenty pre-production R-BAC plates on the road, early ones with black window frames and of all ages. Only reason people scrap them, is because they can't afford the larger repairs, such as a Td4 clutch. I'm probably seeing at least a dozen that I register seeing each day, I know of at least 20 in the town where I live, and I'm driving all over the South East of England most days. The biggest problem with the forums is, you only get people asking questions or moaning about their particular vehicle (regardless of make or model), when they've got an issue with it, which is why whether it is a car forum, firearm forum, amateur radio forum, fishing forum or whatever forum, you'll see nothing but bad things about that make/model, no one ever does a post when things are all working as they should. Same with a lot of the YT videos, for repairs, they'll only ever be made when something goes wrong, or is needing a repair. I'm not going to pull a perfectly working car apart for a tutorial on how to fix something if it isn't broken, neither will anyone else in their right mind (other than Haynes etc for the workshop manuals). I could go through the no end of problems I've had with the entire BMW or Mercedes range, same with a lot of the VAG range, not to mention anything French or Italian, the over complicated Honda V6 from the '90s, the Mitsubishi 2.8D with major oil pressure issues, but it wouldn't achieve anything, because for as many faults I point out on them, others will point out issues on others or claim they don't suffer such problems.

Pretty much everything mentioned is a cheap and easy fix and not surprising on older vehicles. It's not the diff mounts it's the bushes, surprise surprise rubber wears out? Who'd have thought it? £30 fix for all 3 mounts and bushes, blimey! Best not buy one then! I had a k series for 5 years and we've just bought another, no overheating issues unless there's a problem, Yeah again surprise surprise head gaskets in petrol vehicles don't last forever, who'd have thought it? Ok the Td4 is better in so many ways, we've had 3, but the k series isn't a bad engine it's just been put in the wrong vehicle in this case. Window regulators? Don't buy one because of window regulators, seriously? SRS light is usually connections and a reset, again cheap and easy. It's EGR not ERG valve and most don't have a problem it's just Facebook makes you think blanking it fixes everything, it doesn't. Doesn't appear to know a huge amount about them really.

I've had 3 Rover cars with their K series engine ( still got one now) and like you I've never had any problems with any of them either. But I think it's more of a sports car engine, that's why Lotus and Ariel used them, light and powerful, so perhaps not the engine for a 4wheel drive vehicle, and perhaps that's where they got their reputation. But I really like them, and they are still being produced in China today powering Chinese cars without problems, so they can't be that bad.

You know nothing about the K-Series engine. It’s actually a fantastic engine, agreed it’s poorly put together from the start but once you’ve sorted a few things they’ll go on just as well as any other engine. Do you think Lotus and Caterham would have used them if they were pants? At the time they were 1 of the lightest 4 cylinder engines available producing ample power. They mainly fail due to lack of maintenance and driver abuse! If you understand how a K-Series works then it’ll last you a life time. I’ve rallied a K-Series around 5 years now and it’s never let me down. You always see many rally cars in the service areas with their bonnets open with panicking mechanics working on them before the next stage... I’m normally chilling out waiting for the next stage with nothing to do! I’ve also owned a Freelander with a K-Series and it was fantastic! You’ll always get a lemon no matter what car you buy and by the looks of your Freelander you’ve got a right lemon! It doesn’t look like anyone including yourself have looked after it at all. Don’t blame the vehicle blame the tool behind the wheel!

The later versions of the Freelander 1 with the TD4 engine are fantastic because most of the problems were sorted by then - I have one. I also had a 1996 RAV 4 which was undoubtedly the most dangerously under-engineered and fragile car I have ever owned! That model of RAV is NOWHERE near as rugged at the Freelander - For example, my RAV4's spare wheel mount was not strong enough to take the weight of the spare wheel and so it cracked the door!

Had 3 freelander 1s, currently on a 2005 TD4 (BMW engine) that's done 280,000 miles. There are other things to watch for...VCU failure that can take out the transfer box and the diff if not sorted quickly. Changing individual tires can cause VCU to fail. Recommended (actually essential) to change tries in axle pairs. Current recommendation change all four tires together. Check Google for wear percentage. Sounds silly but 4 tires is less than the cost of changing a VCU and transfer box. This tire recommendation isn't exclusive to Landrover Freelanders, there are other SUVs such as Hyundai that also recommend changing all four tires - if you don't it could void your warranty. Fuel tank cradle rusts through causing fuel tank to drop. Cradle is an MOT item. Cradle is not easy to change as the rear subframe has to be dropped. Best way is to buy a cheap new cradle from eBay and then get an independent Landrover specialist to change it. That way works out at about £110, £120 +vat as apposed to £350 to £450 if you let them supply the cradle. Don't be tempted (at any price) to buy the 1800cc petrol version with the K-series engine. This version is so under-powered you'll be forever changing gear right up to the point the head gasket blows and trust me, it will blow! You'll fix it and it will blow again. My first Freelander was a K-series. Head gasket went at 40,000 miles and just out of warranty. Main dealer fitted new head at great cost which blew again 30,000 miles later - got an independent garage to skim the head the second time at a quarter of the main-dealer cost and then got rid of the car as fast as I could. You are warned. Window regulators are made of sponge cake. Main dealer regulator repair £200 ish plus vat. Again, buy a regulator from eBay, about £20 and watch the fitting videos on KZbin then take a morning to fit yourself. Also, you'll probably need a new fuel pump every 40,000 mile, again not an easy fit - £250 +vat at an independent Landcover specialist. Diff mounts are something that can be changed at home. Mounts are available on eBay for about £35 for all three mounts and new bolts - there are a few videos on KZbin showing how to change diff mounts. I will say that If you Google any 'problems' or 'known issues' for any car from any manufacturer you'll find that all have a long list of (sometimes terrifying) stock faults, all cars have problems don't let fanboys tell you any different. Yes, Freelanders are probably a little more unreliable than your average car but pattern parts are cheap and they are relatively easy to work on. My Freelanders have been real workhorses over the last 17 years carrying equipment about for my work. I've done about 400,000 miles in them and have always enjoyed driving them. Great to drive go anywhere car.

If you are not going too often to offroad, its adviced to soften the VCU (by fluid change, you can find videos). You will have less thrust on the rear axle, but the VCU and IRD will lasts forever. Mine is changed for 30000cst silicon oil, and have far enough thrust on the rears to pull out my boat from the water on a 10% gravel ramp. My next issue will be the clutch and the double mass flyweel. Not a problem free car, but the td4 BMW engine is real good, and if you can maintain yourself, its not expensive at all. Compared with the full electronic 4x4 cars of today they are not in the corner.

I purchased an 05 Freelander series 5 TD4 from a garage and got a good price... I got the one Which magazine didn't report any problems or teething troubles with.. Mine was company owned so f s h...It wanted for nothing. Only used to transport small light electrical components, being a 3 door van.. BMW engine is approaching 151,000 with a chain for a timing belt.. I only have a few gripes with it.. Battery terminals being vertically not horizontally positioned take extra care when tightening up and take some getting used to.. So much so I changed the negative terminal for a horizontal clamp.. It's 13 years old now and always starts first time in all weathers.. Only other grip is the A frame drivers side seems tight to get into to sit down and the seat doesn't adjust to make it any better... I am used to also driving a Transit and more head and leg room... It has been looked after.. Still got locking wheel nut keys... Spare wheel cover.. All tools for changing wheels in the back with the jack and all still in the original black plastic box.. I have owned Daimlers and I think the Land Rover badge is just as noble.. Oh yeah, almost forgot... I am amazed at the rear light cluster set up.. The reverse/fog lights are above the brake and indicators.. I always think the brake lights should be swapped around with the fog lights... Drivers at traffic lights telling me brake lights don't work.. :0( Wrong they do work, you don't..

Just two seats with FSH. Used by a local electrical firm, never overloaded or carrying anything too heavy. It has the BMW engine with drive chain for timing belt. Judging by the history it wanted for nothing. 151,000 on clock at purchase. The prop shaft, rear window glass motor etc all replaced as and when required. No issues with it apart from over time the gears began to fail when selected. Can by the clutch as it isn't adjustable and hydraulic. Can be the slave, master cylinder. This is exactly where a garage you can trust 101% comes into it's own. All it turned out to be was the hydraulics needed bleeding of air and moisture that can creep into the system and build up over time. Best way it find out if it is this I discovered is if the problem starts to go away the more you pump the clutch and brake before pulling away.. I also got a Fr2 now which is auto and I miss driving the manual TD4. The FR2 always seems to be resisting me in some way, especially when accelerating..

Man I own one of these (td4) I’m so proud of myself for having something to drive. I’ve had mine for a few years now. It’s never let me down from when I needed it the most in my life, except only with rust and some rubber bushings that were easily fixed. Heys guys take it easy on this video. Don’t be so nasty to this guy. As far as I’m concerned he’s giving good information on what to look out for, and what to expect if you’re thinking of buying one for yourself.

I love my td4. They are old cars now so yeh, they need work, but parts are relatively cheap, easy to sourcd and replace when you compare it to brand new cars that go wrong earlier and dont last as long because the quality isn't as good. Solid cars freelanders but only buy one if you're prepared to pay out fixing it. Basically you need to be a mechanic or know a decent cheap one who knows what they are on about. Believe me they are hard to find!

Am not thinking of buying one I have had 7 of them. Lack of maintenance and you bought one. They are what you make of them. There are many faults with all the small 4x4. You mentioned Rav 4 it will rust to death round you if the diesel pump don't go first. Your driving a vehicle that is indeed broken. They are not all like that. I have had 3 petrols K series only 1 had a head gasket issue. Caused by some idiot removing the thermostat. In my experience as owner who has had Freelanders the Td4 and L series td and K series they all have faults all the items you mentioned are serivce item's appart from the HGF. This is well known That the K series engine was fitted with a bad head gasket once replaced found the engine to run alot better. And have had a k series on a 180 tho with no real issues. Prop bearing diff mounts are thing's you would be checking on any second hand 4x4 not just the on the poor hippo. I seen many neglected vehicles more 4x4s as people seem to think because it's a small 4x4 it's ok it will take it. If looked after properly then it probably would last.

I've had 2 freelander 2.0 TD4's, a GS model and a KALAHARI model. They are sh*t... That's the most polite way of putting it.. People think they are reliable are they f*ck... Timing chains go very easily. And even to replace them your looking well over £1000. Dual mass flywheels are crap until you change to a solid flywheel, the rear diffs are made of chocolate, the front driveshafts wear out very quickly when you make it front wheel drive. Genuinely guys I wouldn't recommend buying a TD4. Because when the timing chain goes you may aswell scrap your freelander. All TD4's tend to be high miles now which means they are all a ticking time bomb with the timing chains unless your incredibly lucky and have proof its have been changed. Buy a RAV4 or CRV. Much better made 4x4

@JustinD93
@JustinD93 Жыл бұрын
@@neildempster2827 no I had a year 2000 2.0 GS TD4 and a 2003 KALAHARI 2.0 TD4. All the TD4 are the same bmw engines which are all chain driven. I've just bought a 2005 Xtrail 2.2 DCI SVE, Fully loaded this car came out around same time as the freelander and this is 10 times better than any freelander. Also has diff locks, Jap cars are better than British cars anyway. Landrover are crap for reliability. It's cool to own one. But once they let you down constantly you call it a day with them 😂

@@neildempster2827 I do believe the 1.8 rover petrol engines in the Freelanders are belt driven. But they eat head gaskets. Honestly my advice to anyone looking at a 4x4 around the same price as a freelander, I'd hands down with go with Nissan Xtrail, Honda CRV or Toyota Rav4. All japanese and reliable 👍🏻

I had it over 215k miles since brand new. The major problem i had is only 2 years ago when the fuel injector in cylinder 1 stop firing and thats all. Again its not that kind of shit so far its okay. I’ve owned a 1996 RAV 4 and it was a very reliable car that got great gas mileage but it was poorly manufactured and it showed the interior of the car was in horrible shape. My land rover is in amazing shape and is a lot more sturdy of a vehicle. Land Rover is a luxury car brand. Even though the freelander is their more budget friendly vehicle you can still tell that it is made by a luxury manufacturer. The inside of my 2003 looks just as nice as most cars produced in 2009 or 2010 when it comes to the interior. Most of the problems that he is stating are very minor and cheap fixes and that’s coming from someone who lives in the US where working on a car like this can be very pricy. For a car that is over 10 years old you are gonna have to eventually replace some components and it’s also how you and previous owners treat the car. Be picky when you buy and know what you are looking for. I plan on getting a 2011 Range Rover in within the next year.

Freelander 1.8 k series are great. If you service and maintain any vehicle you wouldn't end up with problems. Take care with you're possessions and they will take care of you. If you buy a cheap one like this guy. He should expect issues. If he had the failed components replaced such as the window regulator, diff mount, and checked it over it would be a good reliable car. Note, every manufacturer has its issues that's why they update workshop Manuel's tech forums and take actions with recalls, To rectify and assist customers. Giving bad comments on the basics will not help. Appreciate the time for the video but not that helpful and I would still advise people to buy one. Just get the service and checks done on a regular and will all be good. Thanks. Peace.

To top it off, the car only had 56K miles on it and it needed a head gasket. I read somewhere that the car needed a "change engine" light. The person for wrote that post sure got that one right.
