Great video! And, by the way, there is a bass player. He is improvising from bar to bar, melting all the chords together, keeping steady rhythm and groove, pushing the guitars to a higher level. Where would they be without him? It is the three of them together that brings the excitement (imho as a bassplayer).

This Duell reveals much non spoken communication. Joscho robbing the first solo from Gonzalo. Gonzalos face is hilarious. I don't share the opinions of some commentators here, who say the one is superior over the other. Joscho has much self confidence and fun playing with high quality musicians. Pre-Learned-Licks is right somehow, but both Players use them. I think when u want to Play with a higher degree of refinement, u have to rely on pre learned "licks" or structures. But both use These learned structures in a free, dynamic and joyful way.

Two very different players, and there is room for both of them in this wonderful music . . . Sure, Joscho is a master technician and heavy on the pyrotechnics, and he takes a lot of flak for that. "Not enough expressive melody." BTW, they said the same thing about Paganini. I think his playing gets more soulful and artistic every year. Gonzalo is all soulful artist and would never dream of playing a lot of hot licks just for the sake of hotness -- Its not his temperament. to each his own
@non-prolific135thscalemode75 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. I listened to many great gypsy players before and, quite frankly, when I first read the name Joscho Stephan a couple of years ago I thought he must be a wannabe (says a German about another German). Somebody who didn't grow up in a gypsy community could never play like this. That being said I finally listened to him for the first time only a couple of weeks ago and my mind changed completely. He's the most complete gypsy style player I ever saw. His technique is beyond compare and that makes people nervous and envious, but it isn't Joscho's fault. He practiced for almost three decades (including the classical guitar) to reach this extremely high skill level, so why should he play at a lesser level? Not enough soul? Not enough emotions? Is there a "soul-o-meter"? All there is is personal taste and preference. Virtuosity is not a bad thing and Joscho is a virtuoso. I could listen to him all day through and wouldn't get bored, but that goes for guys like Stochelo Rosenberg, Angelo Debarre, Gonzalo Bergara and a couple of others, too. There's no point comparing guitarists the way it happens on YT where it's only about up- or downvoting them. They all developped their own style and that's how it should be. If that wasn't the case I wouldn't enjoy listening to this music anymore. Like I said, it's all a matter of personal taste and that's also the way it should be. Like you said, there's enough room for all of them.

To all those guys who admire Josho for playing thousand notes per second - music is not about playing pre - learned light speed licks, it's a feel that it's projected from the heart - it's called swing. So Josho unfortunatelly shows how gypsy jazz and the music should not be played. 😮

@flamencostu10 жыл бұрын
if you really understand swing and the implications of it to improvisation then you'd see that at several points Gonazalo knods to the bass player to take a solo but Joscho is so self involved that he doesn't see it. Gonzalo builds his solos from pure musical structure and feel in equal measure. Joscho is all about pre-learnt licks being put together in different orders. German efficiency for you!! Gonzalo is the only one who really swings. BUT Gonzalo doesn't need to prove anything he is humble to the beat. Musically, it's Gonzalo i'd keep watchin! Joscho WILL run out of ideas soon. Gonzalo lets the rhythm tell him what to play!
@Metalovai10 жыл бұрын
Wow, my exact thoughts. But I don't think Joscho would run out of ideas.

Ufuk Sarp Selçok what do you think of Joscho latest CD? That's what a call not running out of idea. Musicalement, patrus
@josiah56610 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't count Joscho Stephan out quite yet. As far as piano players go, Fats Waller and Art Tatum played loads of pre-learnt licks but they eventually learnt to understand rhythm musically and stayed loyal to it. I don't want to say that Bergara is definitely the most musical of the two, but I will say that he played the most tastefully I think, which is an assessment purely based on style and player preference. I also don't want to say that Joscho has no musicality at all because he was responding to Bergara as much as the next guy, and perhaps visibly enjoying his playing the most out of the three. It's like +Aaron Walker said, they're two fantastic musicians that just like to speak differently.
@flamencostu10 жыл бұрын
yeah Gonzalo is perhaps a bit more from the traditional vein in terms of how his ideas flow from the beat. I actually really like Joscho's playing. Maybe I just identify with Gionzalo's playing. I do love the huge bends that Joscho does!! Really cool!!

I thought that it was just marvelous wtf
@Armov11 жыл бұрын
Down vote me all you want, but I think what everyone really wants to say is that they don't really mind that Joscho loves to exhibit his virtuosity, it's that he chooses to play fairly bland scalar ideas in the meanwhile. Don't shoot me.
