I was obsessed with Steadicam when I learned about it at a filmmaking camp in 1996 when I was 16. Years later I was working as a Specialist at an Apple Store and Garrett Brown walked in. I didn't know it was him at first - but he looked so familiar. When I was running the sale for him I asked for his last name to enter in payment. As soon as he said "Brown" I looked up with wide eyed and asked "Are you *Garrett* Brown?" He was! And we talked a bit about steadicam and how freaking excited I was to meet him. He was so nice! So awesome!

Here is a tip for Gh4 users: As you may know the Panasonic Gh4 isn't the best when it comes to low light, as it makes a lot of noise with high ISO. By combining the Sigma 18-35mm with aperture 1.8 and the Metabones speedbooster, you can film with aperture f1.2, which helps a lot. But that's not all: You probably know that shooting with shutterspeed 1/50 or 1/48 (depending on the framerate) gives you the best filmatic look. But if you struggle with dark shots and high ISO, try lowering the shutterspeed to 1/40 or 1/30. Actually I shot the tracking shot at 5:24 with shutterspeed 1/30. The reason for why I think it worked ok for that shot, is that the camera didn't wiggle that much (creating motion blur). So when you got aperture f1.2, shutterspeed 1/30 and ISO 800, you can shoot ok video even in low light :) But remember to avoid to much movement with the camera as 1/30 creates a lot more motion blur then 1/50. Good luck!

For those who have a digital camera like me (Sony a5000 or higher) Its easier to drop the stick all the way down and use one small weight, unless your lens are huge and heavy. I have a sony a5000 right now with a 35 mm lens. i have one weight in the back and I pushed the camera a little forward to balance it. So far, works really well. Thxxx. :)
@johnburton37638 жыл бұрын
Hmm. The weights at the bottom should be farther from the axis, or you'll get all kinds of spin. Too bad you can't adjust them. A couple extra inches would do wonders, as my girlfriend likes to say.

Of all the camera stabilizer KZbin tutorials out there, this is by far the best. I too tried my hand at making one of these. The gimbal wasn't all that hard to make, but balancing is really the key to success. Trying to fabricate all the necessary mechanisms to accomplish that is what makes it much more than a weekend DIY project. With ready-made devices such as this one for under $50, it doesn't make sense to go it on your own.

My first “steady” system was using a tripod with one leg slightly extended and my camera bag suspended from it for counterbalance. I held it with two fingers just below the camera mount and it worked ok. My second was a monopod half extended with my wife’s ankle weights wrapped at the bottom. Much smoother with the cylindrical foam hand area to manipulate as well as absorbing the more rough movements from my finger manipulation. I tried a diy using multiple hinges on a wooden frame, but it didn’t come out nearly a nice as your prototype shown here. Great video! I love your experimental movie. 😇

In my opinion NICOLAI's shot was the best out of the 3 even though yours was the smoothest one. He did a great job when he rotated the camera towards the guy that came out from the room.

Hey @Andyax, have you used any other stabilisers to compare this one to? Thanks.
@TertioFilmDesign5 жыл бұрын
I have this stabilizer and I'm struggling to get as smooth footage as you. The camera appears to be balanced properly, 2-3 second drop time, completely horizontal but it still shows tiny jerking motions from my hand and is prone to swinging. It seems stiff whenever it needs to either compensate for panning or when I want to intentionally pan the camera. Do anyone have suggestions in what I might be doing wrong? Setup is Canon 70d with either the 50mm 1.8 or 24mm 2.8, no mounted microphone.
@responsiblejerk23285 жыл бұрын
It takes a lot of practice and a few takes to get nice steady shots. Camera needs to be balanced really well and I like a bit more ballast weight (a quicker drop time, about 1 second) to compensate for roll. I have learned to be very conservative with the movements, and for only short durations.

Thanks for the practical review, this is way more than other people have done. I don't know much about camera work, so I didn't wan't to buy my friend a useless piece of gear. Now I know I bought him an *okay* piece of gear that has problems, but is still an okay holiday gift. Edit: Tell your sound designer Havard he did an excellent job.

EDIT (13feb2018): Sunsky chose to change the product I linked to, to their own steadycam which is a copycat of the one in this video. That's not acceptable, so I have removed the link. The only trustworthy site to buy the Yelangu S60t from now, as I know of, is BHphotovideo. OLD POST: Looks like they lowered the price! This site is the cheapest place to buy the Yelangu S60T and it's safe :) www.sunsky-online.com/v/412363/2595/280047

+Andyax I bought 10 pieces from that site and they (after all the costums) finally arrived! So if anyone is interrested in bying one with cheaper shipping, I'm selling 9 from germany ;) The point of bying 10 was actually to get down the price of shipping and I think the steadicams got cheaper, too. So now I'm probably going to sell the others on ebay.
